"We were investigating drug sales on the street," said Retired Detroit Deputy Police Chief James Younger whose partner was shot in 1972 by a man who was never arrested for the crime. The shooting left Detroit Police Officer Donald Kimbrough paralyzed from the waist down and he died December 7, 2017, from medical complications that resulted from the decades old shooting. "With the knowledge that he was shot and never fully recovered, the manner is homicide," said Dr. Bernardino Pacris from the Oakland County Medical Examiner's Officer who conducted an autopsy on Kimbrough and recovered an oxidized, deformed bullet from Kimbrough's back. Younger said doctors could not remove the bullet without killing Kimbrough because of where it was located. Sergeant Todd Eby of Detroit's Homicide Task Force has been assigned to solving Officer Kimbrough's murder. It happened August 25, 1972, in an alley near a methadone clinic that was located at John R and Belmont.Kimbrough, Younger and another officer, Donald Hughes, were investigating drug activity in the area when they heard gunshots. Kimbrough and Hughes took off running to the area where witnesses said men were shooting while Younger began to navigate their vehicle around traffic to get to the location. Kimbrough and Hughes spotted one man holding a long gun and ordered him to place the weapon on the ground. Moments later, another man who was sitting in the driver's seat of a green Lincoln Continental that was parked nearby, rolled his window down and opened fire on Kimbrough and Hughes. The two officers returned fire, but Kimbrough had been shot. The man who had the long gun picked it back up off the ground and raced to hop into the green Lincoln Continental. Both men escaped.The vehicle they fled in is described as a green 1968 Lincoln Continental with a black vinyl top. It's unclear if the car was a two-door or four-door. A partial license plate may be GA- 2--.The shooter was described as a white man 25 - 30-years-old with shoulder-length black hair, a thick black mustache and long bushy sideburns. Police did recover the shooter's .32 caliber Colt semi-automatic pocket pistol. A man found it in his yard.  "Don was a good policeman. A good person and very energetic person. We spent a lot of time together not only on duty, but also off duty," said Younger who retired as a Detroit Police Chief and now teaches Criminal Justice at Wayne County Community College. If he's alive, Kimbrough's shooter could be in his seventies. But Younger, Eby, and family and friends of Donald Kimbrough believe it's not too late for someone to help solve the case by identifying a suspect. "Where's man's humanity towards man," said Younger.  Nintendo has long been synonymous with entertainment. But now the gaming giant is getting into education.The company announced on Tuesday it is partnering with education nonprofit Institute of Play to bring its popular Switch gaming console and DIY Labo kits to 100 classrooms across the United States. The effort aims to help kids build communication and critical thinking skills in science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics (STEAM).The Nintendo Switch, which is both a handheld and home console, sold roughly 10 million units?after its launch. In January 2018, the company introduced Nintendo Labo, series of DIY projects that allows kids to build things such as an RC car, a fishing rod and a piano out of cardboard. These cardboard figures are used with Switch video games and can tech basic programming skills through its Toy-Con Garage feature.Nintendo is bringing the products to 100 schools nationwide for kids ages 8 to 11. A pilot program has already brought kits to 11 schools in the New York City Tri-State area. The program will run through March 2019.Interested schools can also apply to participate. The Institute of Play said it will eventually create lesson plans for any teacher who wants to introduce it in their classroom.Reggie Fils-Aime, Nintendo of America's president and chief operating officer, told CNN Business the move aims to give back to the community and get the next generation of workers excited about new technology."Nintendo thinks in terms of the long-term," he said."The importance of STEM and STEAM for us is core to having great employees in the future."Arana Shapiro, co-executive director of the Institute of Play, said the response so far has been strong."Kids are very excited by it. There's immediate buy-in from them," she said. "Teachers were skeptical at the beginning, but they've gotten excited across the board by the end. The tipping point for them is the Toy-Con Garage part and being able to see kids tweak [the product] and make it their own."Nintendo's move into the classroom comes at a time when "screen time" is under scrutiny. Studies have shown kids and teens who are addicted to their smartphones tend to be less attentive, get less sleep and are more at risk of depression and suicide.Although the Labo kit gets students to build things and use their imagination, a screen is still central to the process. But Fils-Aime says Labo kits provide more than just entertainment to pass the time."It inspires people, particularly kids to make creations and figure out how they work," he said. "The do-it-yourself, tactile nature really is what drives the experience. Because of the hands-on nature we feel it provides a really compelling experience for kids."Michael Pachter, an analyst at Wedbush, said the Switch device is less controversial than other devices such as Xbox or PlayStation because most of the content is E-rated and not sensitive for kids."You don't feel as bad about your kids spending time using it," he said.He believes Labo is an attempt to ride the success of Nintendo's Wii, which blended gaming with interaction in the real world, by launching a new product.Shapiro from the Institute of Play said the value of the kit is in how kids are encouraged to problem solve and think critically in a fun way."We are always on the lookout for new tools and technologies that combine the best of learning with the spirit of play," she said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The clock is ticking as family members of Suzanne Johnson wait to see if Governor Jerry Brown will grant clemency before he leaves office Monday. Six-month-old Jasmine Miller died while under the care of Johnson at her home daycare center in North Park in 1997. Johnson found guilty of assaulting Jasmine and sentenced to life in prison. Prosecutors argued Johnson was frustrated by the baby's crying, pointing to the accepted signs of Shaken Baby Syndrome: Bleeding behind the eyes, and bleeding and swelling in the brain."We've seen a major shift in the science of Shaken Baby Syndrome," said Mike Semanchik, managing attorney with the California Innocence Project at California Western School of Law.According to Semanchik, "based on the science we know now, the jury at the time would not have found Suzanne Johnson guilty." Medical consensus now says those telltale signs of shaken baby syndrome can be caused by various medical conditions and accidental falls from short heights.Johnson says Jasmine fell out of her high chair but seemed okay, before becoming unresponsive hours later."The evidence supports an equal theory for a fall, as it does for an intentional act," said Semanchik.The science has not been enough to persuade the courts. All appeals for a new trial have been rejected."Missing her has been pretty horrific," said Sharon Johnson, Suzanne's daughter-in-law. She describes her mother-in-law as a loving woman who has remained positive, leading bible study and other groups in prison. She's up for parole in 2020, but Sharon hopes a petition for clemency on the governor's desk will be granted."She's 74. She's been wrongly incarcerated for 20 years. We just want her home," said Sharon Johnson. Semanchik says new evidence also shows paramedics forced a breathing tube down the baby's esophagus rather than her windpipe, an error that could have contributed to her death.A spokesperson for the District Attorney's office says they are in touch with Jasmine's family and remain opposed to the clemency petition.Former District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis, who did not support arguments for a new trial, has submitted a letter in support of the clemency petition."She has done well in prison.
