BEIJING, July 27 (Xinhua) -- Senior Chinese official Li Changchun called for stepped-up efforts to reform the countries cultural sector at a meeting held recently and joined by publicity and culture chiefs from China's central government.Li also urged more progress to be made in the development and prosperity of China's cultural industries.Li, a Standing Committee member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, presided over the meeting. State Councilor Liu Yandong and Liu Yunshan, head of the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee, attended the meeting.

BEIJING, June 11 (Xinhua) -- China's retail sales, the main gauge of consumer spending in the world's fastest-growing economy, rose 18.7 percent year on year to 1.25 trillion yuan (183 billion U.S. dollars) in May, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) announced Friday.The growth rate was 3.5 percentage points higher than the same period last year and 0.2 percentage points higher than April's, said NBS spokesman Sheng Laiyun.Urban consumption hit 1.08 trillion yuan in May, up 19.1 percent year on year, while rural residents spent 163.7 billion yuan, up 15.8 percent.  A woman walks by a sale advertising poster in Beijing, capital of China, May 11, 2010.In the first five months, total retail sales climbed 18.2 percent to 6.03 trillion yuan. The growth rate was 3.2 percentage points higher than the same period last year.The government rolled out a series of incentives to bolster consumption to counter the fallout from the global economic downturn, including subsidies for home appliances in rural areas and tax breaks for auto purchases, in early 2009, among others.China's auto sales in May rose 28.35 percent from a year earlier to 1.44 million units, bringing combined sales in the first five months to 7.6 million units, up 53.25 percent from a year earlier.Monthly sales of home appliances in China's countryside surged 220 percent year on year in May to 12.6 billion yuan. The figure for January-May period was 54.35 billion yuan, up 400 percent from year on year.

BEIJING, July 1 (Xinhua) -- The State Council, or China's cabinet, has approved a plan which calls for combining four key administrative districts of Beijing, the national capital, into two larger ones.According to the plan proposed by the Beijing Municipal Government, the former Dongcheng, Xicheng, Chongwen and Xuanwu districts at the core of Beijing will merge to form the new Dongcheng and Xicheng districts.The new Dongcheng District, composed of the former Dongcheng and Chongwen districts, would have an area of 41.84 square km and a permanent population of 865,000; the new Xicheng District, including the former Xicheng and Xuanwu districts, would cover 50.7 square km, with about 1.25 million residents, as outlined in the plan.The adjustment of Beijing's administrative divisions was aimed at balancing the development of the city's core districts, said a spokesman with the municipal government.Among the four core districts of Beijing, the development of Chongwen and Xuanwu in the south was lagging behind that of Dongcheng and Xicheng in the north, said the spokesman.The action could optimize the district' social resources, reduce administrative costs and enhance Beijing's core area, he said.Further, the move was expected to speed the renovation of Beijing's Old City, which basically included the four districts, and make for better protection of the historical cultural sites in the Old City, he said.The municipal government has been striving to achieve the transformation of Beijing into a "world city", which has a global influence in terms of politics, economy and culture, by 2050.

PARIS, July 8 (Xinhua) -- Legislative bodies of China and France launched their regular parliamentary exchange mechanism on Thursday, vowing to further push forward the Sino-French comprehensive strategic partnership.Wu Bangguo, chairman of the Standing Committee of Chinese National People's Congress (NPC), and Bernard Accoyer, speaker of the French National Assembly, jointly declared the beginning of the first meeting of Sino-French Parliamentary Cooperation Committee.Wu said the launch of the high-level meeting between the two legislative bodies signals the Sino-French parliamentary exchanges were promoted to a new stage.Accoyer said the regular parliamentary exchange mechanism could serve as an important platform for both nations to exchange views on mutual concerns and promote bilateral cooperation in politics, technology, new energy and environmental protection.Ahead of the meeting, Wu and Accoyer held talks on bilateral ties and parliamentary cooperation.Accoyer said France attached great importance to Wu's visit as Wu is the first Chinese top legislator that visited France in 13 years.France regards China as a strategic partner, expecting to expand all-round strategic cooperation with China, boost coordination on international issues, through joint efforts against global financial crisis, climate change and other challenges, he said.Wu said his ongoing visit to France is aimed to build a closer relation between the Chinese NPC and the French National Assembly. He stressed that China will hold more dialogues and communications with France to enhance political mutual trust and boost the Sino- French economic cooperation.Earlier on the day, Wu held talks with French Senate President Gerard Larcher. BEIJING, June 19 (Xinhua) -- Total value of China's lottery sales hit 63.16 billion yuan (9.26 billion U.S. dollars) in the first five months this year, up 22.8 percent over the same period last year, the country's Ministry of Finance said Saturday.Welfare lottery sales reached 36.73 billion yuan during the same period, a year-on-year increase of 25.9 percent; sales of sports lotterieshit 26.44 billion yuan, up 18.8 percent.In May alone, sales value reached 14.44 billion yuan, up 18.7 percent year on year, a statement on the Ministry's website said.
