SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The pomp and circumstance will be virtual this year, but the money incoming Mayor Todd Gloria and the nine City Council members will take home is very real.Starting Thursday, the city will pay its mayor 6,000 a year -- more than double outgoing Mayor Kevin Faulconer’s roughly 1,000 salary.Meanwhile, City Council salaries will jump from ,000 a year to 4,000 overnight. That's a 65 percent raise; it increases to 5,000 on Dec. 10, 2022.The timing may seem odd, given the pandemic's impact on jobs and our economy, and the fact that major city general fund revenues are projected to be about million under budget this fiscal year. But it turns out San Diego voters authorized these pay increases back in 2018 via Measure L, which voters passed with 78 percent approval.In a statement, a spokeswoman for Gloria said he would accept the full salary."Nearly 80 percent of San Diego voters agreed that the adjustments to the salaries of San Diego elected officials was the right thing to do. (CNN) -- An American graduate student, who had been held for three years in Iran on suspicion of being a spy, has been freed and is headed to an American military base in Europe.Chinese-born Xiyue Wang, a Princeton University PhD student, was conducting research in Tehran when he was arrested there on espionage charges in August 2016. Wang was sent to Iran's notorious Evin Prison and sentenced to 10 years.Iran's Foreign Minister Javad Zarif said Saturday that Wang's release comes as a prisoner swap between the two countries. In exchange for Wang's release, the US freed Iranian scientist Massoud Soleimani, Zarif said on Twitter, sharing a photo of himself accompanying Soleimani home on an Iranian plane. Soleimani, an Iranian stem cell scientist, was arrested by US law enforcement upon landing in Chicago in fall 2018, according to Iran's state-run Press TV.Zarif said Soleimani and Wang would be "joining their families shortly."Because the US and Iran do not have diplomatic relations, the Swiss government had provided consular services to Wang and reported back to the State Department.The White House announced Wang's release in a statement early Saturday, thanking the Swiss for their assistance in negotiating with Iran. With funding from the university, Wang went to Iran to study Farsi and conduct scholarly research for his dissertation.Before traveling to Iran, Wang laid out his research plan in letters to the Pakistani Embassy in Washington, DC, which issued his visa."He was not involved in any political activities or social activism; he was simply a scholar trying to gain access to materials he needed for his dissertation," the university says.Iran accused Wang of being "sent" by Princeton to "infiltrate" the country, charges which the university says are "completely false."In 2018, a United Nations panel on arbitrary detention said that there was no legal basis for Wang's arrest and imprisonment, and called for his immediate release.'Bargaining chip'In August, three years after he was imprisoned, Wang's wife, Hua Qu, issued a plea for Trump and the international community to help free her husband."My husband is an academic researcher. He's a father, husband. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A cyclist says he narrowly escaped injury after finding a camouflaged 'booby trap' on a popular trail along Lake Hodges.Steven Lennox made the discovery minutes into his bike ride Friday afternoon on a trail in the San Dieguito River Park. He was taking photos that afternoon, so he was going slower than normal and stopped when he saw the shadow on the ground."It was a shadow line all the way across. I looked up from there and I saw the ivy," said Lennox.But the ivy wasn't the only thing stretched across the trail. "As I got closer, I saw the rusty wire," said Lennox.In several photos he took, the ivy is seen intertwined with barbed wire and tied to a tree."Three to four loops ... had to weave it though. Somebody spent some time putting it together," said Lennox.The barbed wire appeared to be pulled from an old fence and camouflaged with a nearby vine."When you're being deceptive and hiding something, that's being cruel," said Lennox.The wire was strewn across at a height that would hit a cyclist in the chest or neck area."I don't think someone would have enough speed to cut their head off, but somebody could snap a neck," said Lennox.The discovery was made along a trail popular with cyclists, hikers and horseback riders. Rangers didn't find any similar hazards on the trail and tell us there haven't been any similar incidents in the past. Lennox says he has seen large rocks left on the trail, possibly to slow down cyclists. 1474

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A sixth robbery suspect was taken into custody following an hours-long SWAT standoff in City Heights Friday afternoon. Police arrived to arrest several suspects on the 3600 block of University Avenue around 11 a.m. Several people were detained, but at least one of the suspects refused to surrender, Sgt. Michael Stirk said. RELATED: Check traffic in your areaUniversity Avenue was shut down for several hours in both directions between 36th Street and Cherokee Avenue due to police activity. Just after 5 p.m., a flash bang could be heard going off near the building. Just before 6:30 p.m. Friday, San Diego Police said all the suspects had been "peacefully taken into custody." The department also said it was working to clear its vehicles out of the area. Captain Anthony Dupree confirmed the suspects were being investigated for a string of about 20 robberies throughout the mid-city region, extending into La Mesa and El Cajon as well. Several of the suspects arrested Thursday were thought to be involved in a robbery Thursday night near the SDSU campus, said Dupree.Suspects were peacefully taken into custody and we are currently working on moving our vehicles out of the street to open up traffic.
