SAN MARCOS (KGTV) - A report of a man shooting his wife at their North San Diego County home Tuesday may have been a swatting call, San Diego County Sheriff’s Deputies said.Deputies got a call indicating a man had opened fire on his wife at a home in the 1400 block of Clearview Way near San Elijo Park in San Marcos about 2:30 p.m.Investigators surrounded the home, breaking down the door with guns drawn. They found the man unarmed on the balcony. No victim was in the home. Several schools were temporarily placed on lockdown. The man’s wife later arrived at the scene, unaware of the situation. The woman, who did not want to be identified,  told 10News she and her husband are gamers with millions of followers. "People always have an opinion and they may not like what you do or say and sometimes it’s taken to an extreme when they call the cops on you," said the man's wife. The wife said her husband had no idea deputies had entered the home until he heard shouting. He usually wears a headset while he's playing. "He heard 'this is the police'. I think he heard it, 'this is the police' and he took his headset off and he came downstairs and he saw guns being pointed at him and he wanted to show his hands because he was afraid to get shot," she said. The call made to deputies was traced back to a doctor’s office in Michigan, according to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department. Deputies confirmed the call was a hoax.Swatting is the practice of making a hoax call about a crime to draw law enforcement officers to a specific location.The San Marcos man said he had been playing an online game when the incident happened.This story has been updated from the initial Sheriff's Department report that a woman had been shot at the home. 1801

SANTEE, Calif. (KGTV) - A report of another car found burning in a driveway is raising questions about a possible fire starter targeting vehicles in Santee.On Shaggybark Drive, Michelle Genshaw and her husband were pulling out of their home two weeks ago -- just before 4:30 in the morning -- when they saw flames in their neighbor's driveway.  A 2007 Acura TL was on fire."It looked odd because there were flames coming out of the front and back of the car, like two separates fires," said Genshaw.Genshaw's husband banged on the door, waking the Arnold family.  Together, they put the fire out with a hose a few minutes later.  Catherine Arnold is thankful the fire didn't spread, but she tells us the car is a total loss."It's really upsetting.  It was my father's car and he passed away and it was the last thing belonging to my dad that I had," said Arnold.Sheriff's investigators were called out and concluded it was arson."We talked to police and they said they smelled gas," said Genshaw.A week and a half later, car alarms sounded along with a Mother's Day inferno on Pearlwood Road.  Neighbors discovered a newly purchased Ford Mustang convertible torched in a driveway.  Mason jars with a flammable liquid were found near the gas tank. SANTEE (CNS) - One person was found dead at the scene of an apparent single-vehicle crash this morning.A car was found off the roadway just before 8 a.m. near the 11400 block of Woodside Avenue, San Diego County Sheriff's Lt. Dave Perkins said.Details were scant, but Perkins said deputies found a woman, later identified as 40-year-old Ashleigh Hanson, inside the car who appeared to have died of injuries sustained in a crash.It's unknown at this time if drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash or if whether played a role. 537

San Ysidro, CA (KGTV)- The border wait times to cross into the United States are significantly shorter Tuesday.According to a U.S. Customs and Border Protection App, the wait times at the border in San Ysidro averaged around an hour depending on the time of day.In the last few days, border crossers reported waiting up to ten hours to cross into the U.S."A lot of people going to the border five, six hours before their work entry, it's been crazy," said Jose Montanez.Montanez is a married father of two. He lives in Tijuana, but crosses to work as a manager at a taco factory. He said the lines this weekend were especially bad, even in the pedestrian lanes."Four hours, five hours waiting in line, standing in line, you get tired," said Montanez.Last Friday, CBP began "adjusting operations" to focus on essential travel. The goal is to slow the spread of COVID-19.A spokesman with CBP sent 10News a statement, that reads in part:"According to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection, a recent survey of more than 100,000 travelers on the southwest border found that the vast majority of cross-border travel by U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents is for purposes that are not deemed essential. To respond to the ongoing public health crisis and protect local southwest border communities, CBP is taking measures to discourage non-essential travel to and from Mexico to limit the spread of COVID-19 in the United States. "Fewer lanes and increased secondary inspections led to massive delays."If they have to ask more questions and isolate people from one another so the essential workers can go and cross faster, that would be perfect," said Montanez.Instead, innocent workers are feeling the impact the most."Those that are crossing right now are doing so cause they really need to and they're going to continue crossing," said Paola Avila, of the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce.Restrictions have been in place at the border since March. Avila said the new protocol now doesn't make sense, especially since San Diego County is off the state's COVID-19 monitoring list."Non-essential businesses are going to start reopening. More businesses are going to start reopening, so you're going to have a greater workforce that's going to have to facilitate those businesses reopening, but now you're going to have these restrictions. It's not in sync with the rest of our procedures and regulations and restrictions," said Avila.She worries the strategy could backfire and lead to more virus spread, especially for people using the pedestrian walkway."Now, you have large masses of people with no social distancing, you're creating an unsafe environment," said Avila.Montanez says he does his best to keep his distance while in line."You do, even though, you're close to each other, there's no space between the front and the back of you," said Montanez.Agency officials urge people to only travel to Mexico if it's necessary."We need people to think twice about non-essential travel and to ask themselves if the travel is worth risking their lives and the lives of others. Security experts are clarifying what you should know about the hack against the U.S.Last week, federal authorities warned of the breach in government and private computer systems. It's suspected that Russian attackers were behind it.Some members of Congress have voiced concerns that taxpayers' information could be exposed through the treasury department. But one expert tells us that isn't really valuable to these attackers.“The breach over the last week is much more geared towards nation state secrets, manufacturing secrets, supply chain secrets, you know different intellectual property, than it is personal information,” said Randy Watkins, Chief Technology Officer at CriticalStart.Watkins says the average person likely won't see any immediate impact, but with policy information and military strategies at risk, there could be downstream ramifications.Federal authorities say the hackers primarily got in through software called solar winds that some agencies use.Watkins says that means we need to look more at how we measure security for third party vendors.“A lot of times, the attackers don't need to go directly after the treasury department or the department of defense. Those are very locked down networks, but they can go after the third parties that do business and have connections into those environments, and that's what they did in this scenario.”Officials say this hack could have started as early as last March.Watkins says the type of tech they used is hard to catch, allowing attackers time to patiently collect data under the radar.That means working on detection methods will also be key moving forward. 1641
