INDIANA — Two dogs are doing well tonight in a new and loving home after a northwest Indiana veterinarian refused the original owner's request to have the healthy dogs euthanized. The man who owned Sam and Cosmo had divorced his wife and was moving in with his girlfriend, who said she was allergic to dogs. He visited a Portage, Indiana veterinarian and asked that the dogs be put down. The vet refused because they were healthy and friendly dogs. Penny Emerson with Begin Again Rescue in Valparaiso, Indiana took in the dogs. Emerson says the dogs were eventually moved to Peoples Animal Welfare Society in Chicago's Tinley Park. This is where a Lockport, Illinois couple eventually adopted the dogs. "Someone had shared the article and we just lost our Chihuahua, Brutus, in June. And we had him for 17 years. And it just spoke to me because we just had a senior dog and I couldn't imagine just dumping him off somewhere," said Tiffany Dybas, one of Cosmo and Sam's new owners. "So, just saw the story about the dogs and it just broke our hearts." "If you have the room, and have the ability, and you're willing to take that step and see what you get — it's not a bad thing," said Tiffany Dybas' husband, Eric Dybas. "There's plenty out there and they all deserve a chance." Cosmo and Sam are adjusting to their new home and are loving it there. 1361
Laverne Renz lives alone in her home near Pittsburgh. At 85-years-old, Renz is not as independent as she used to be, but she has plenty of energy.“I have to listen to her, or she’ll beat me up,” Renz jokingly said when asked about her caretaker, Rose Shenkel. The two have a playful relationship.But Shenkel is not always around, so Renz has a back-up caretaker.“Alexa, call Susie for me,” shouts Renz.She uses Amazon’s Alexa to make phone calls and to listen to her favorite music. Alexa is even setup to give Renz important reminders.“She reminds me when to take my medicine, when to eat my lunch. She reminds me of everything. She won’t leave me alone,” jokes Renz.But Shenkel said when she’s not there to keep Renz company, Alexa can step in.“It’s companionship for her. Artificial, but it’s companionship,” says Shenkel. “She spends a lot of time alone, so I think when Alexa comes on that perks her up, even when she wants to shut her up, it perks her up.”The technology can be more than just a voice to talk to. In regions of the United States and Mexico that are prone to hurricanes, aggressive spiders are evolving to survive and ride out the storm.When hurricanes rage along the Gulf of Mexico or charge up the East Coast, they can reshape an entire habitat in a short time. The winds destroy trees and spread debris for miles, putting new pressure on the creatures living in these environments.But how do creatures adapt when their habitats are so disturbed? Researchers looked at Anelosimus studiosus spiders that live in storm-prone areas along the coast to see how they changed. Their study was published Monday in the journal Nature Ecology and Evolution.These weather systems are called "black swan events": a surprising event with a major impact that is explained with the benefit of hindsight. They don't offer much lead time, so the researchers had to scramble to study the spider colonies before and after projected storms.The team monitored Subtropical Storm Alberto and Hurricanes Florence and Michael during the 2018 hurricane season. They tried to anticipate the systems' trajectories and study areas that included 240 female spider colonies, comparing them with areas where spider colonies were unaffected by such storms.The researchers returned to the sites hit by the storms 48 hours later. About 75% of the colonies survived the initial storm strikes."It is tremendously important to understand the environmental impacts of these 'black swan' weather events on evolution and natural selection," said Jonathan Pruitt, lead study author, evolutionary biologist and Canada 150 Chair in McMaster University's Department of Psychology, Neuroscience & Behaviour. "As sea levels rise, the incidence of tropical storms will only increase. Now more than ever we need to contend with what the ecological and evolutionary impacts of these storms will be for non-human animals."The A. studiosis spider species has two main personality traits that are inherited: docile and aggressive.Aggressiveness can be determined based on their speed, attackers pursuing prey, cannibalizing male spiders as well as eggs and their vulnerability to the invasion of predatory spiders.On the one hand, aggressive colonies are better at gathering resources in times of scarcity. But when deprived of food or subjected to overheating, aggressive colonies can also suffer from infighting."Tropical cyclones likely impact both of these stressors by altering the numbers of flying prey and increasing sun exposure from a more open canopy layer," Pruitt said. "Aggressiveness is passed down through generations in these colonies, from parent to daughter, and is a major factor in their survival and ability to reproduce."The researchers determined that after a storm passed, the colonies that aggressively pursued food and resources were able to produce more egg cases. The spiderlings also had a better chance of surviving into early winter.In areas that weren't hit by storms, docile colonies thrived.These findings were consistent even as the storms varied in duration, intensity and size. The researchers believe this shows that extreme events can shape animal behaviors. They would like to conduct more long-term studies to learn whether this is the case. 3250
Learning how to navigate the online world safely is challenge for anyone, but it can be especially difficult for those who didn’t grow up with technology.Pierre Vidoni is 83-years-old and decided to sign up for a digital class at his local library."Young people less than 50 years old grew up with computers, so they understand the nuances of computers," Vidoni says. Amy Halfback teaches the privacy class and says many of her older students say they feel stupid."They are nervous interacting in the online world," she says. From malware, internet scams and phishing, it’s easy for anyone to get taken advantage of online. However, Vidoni says he’s not worried about privacy online.According to the Journal of Public Health, between 2 to 3 million seniors get scammed each year. A few years ago, that was Vidoni. Hackers took over his home screen and locked him out of his computer."They got into my computer, and in order to get it back, I had to pay them money,” Vidoni recalls. “And it was no small amount. It added up to about 0." His family still teases him for falling for the scam. But after taking classes and practicing keeping his identity private online, Vidoni learned the lesson the hard way.“Now, anytime someone is asking me for something that I'm not asking for, I just erase it," he says. 1322
In a sea of young people fighting for their future, there's a 13-year-old girl named Haven Coleman.In many ways, she's just like any other teenager, but she's also the co-founder of a national organization called U.S. Youth Climate Strike. She spends every Friday striking outside the Colorado State Capitol.“So the story... involves sloths," Haven says.Inspired several years ago to save the sloths she deeply loves, Haven decided to become a climate activist."I was trying to do everything and anything, and I'm still doing that to stop climate change because this is something that's so like... big, so terrifying, and that's gonna be following me and my generation," she explains. "And it has been for our whole lives."Growing up during a time when climate change is a common topic, Haven wasn't shocked when she found out carbon dioxide has now reached a level in the atmosphere that hasn't been seen for three million years. On May 11, sensors at the Mauna Loa Observatory in Hawaii measured concentrations of the greenhouse gas to be at 415 parts per million. That means for every 1 million molecules of gas in the atmosphere, 415 were carbon dioxide. Compare that to 315 ppm 60 years ago, and 280 at the start of the industrial revolution. Without human interference, carbon in fossil fuels would leak slowly into the atmosphere through volcanic activity over millions of years. That's how the Earth has had these levels before. But a process that is normally very slow has been accelerated by the burning of coal, oil, and natural gas."Those greenhouse gases, that carbon pollution that we're putting into the atmosphere, much of that is going to stay there for a very long period of time and affect our climate for decades to come," Tony Dutzik said.Tony Dutzik with Environment America says what's most concerning about this data, is that human beings have never lived in a climate as hot as the one that existed three million years ago. Sea levels were approximately 50 feet higher than where they are today.According to Scripps Institution of Oceanography, vegetation records from that era called Pliocene show forests growing in the Canadian arctic, and savannas covering what is now known as the north African desert. The impacts of a changing climate are already evident in the United States."We're beginning to see supercharged storms -- storms that are gaining energy from our warmer oceans -- that are dumping immense amounts of rainfall. Storms like Hurricane Harvey, and Hurricane Florence in just the last few years," Dutzik says. "Sea level is rising at about a tenth of an inch per year, and that rate of rise is accelerating, and so cities like Boston and Miami increasingly have to deal with coastal flooding. And in places in the west, we're seeing larger more intense wildfires that burn hotter and are harder to control."As catastrophic as these events may seem, Dutzik says change is possible if everyone plays a part."Every day we have the opportunity when we're making energy efficiency upgrades to our homes, when we're purchasing our next car, when we're choosing where to live -- whether we live some place that's close to the places that we need to be or far away," Dutzik says.However, Dutzik notes a majority of change necessary to alter the course the earth's current projections will take a lot of political power. Power that young people like Haven are strongly pushing for."I hope that we fix this," Haven says.
