An accused serial killer, known as the “Golden State Killer,” is expected to plead guilty Monday in person, in a university ballroom.Joseph James DeAngelo was arrested in April 2018 at his home near Sacramento, California. He is accused of heinous crimes, including rape and murder, in almost a dozen California counties in both Southern and Northern California during the 1970s to 80s.DeAngelo is expected to plead guilty at Monday’s hearing to 13 counts of murder, 13 counts of kidnapping and admit responsibility for another 60+ rapes and other crimes. As part of the plea deal announced earlier this month, DeAngelo would be sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole in August. Victims and victims' families are not expected to make comments on Monday. They will get a chance to make victim impact statements later this summer.Monday’s hearing will be held in the Sacramento State University Union Ballroom, a large room that can hold roughly 2,000 people for a reception, according the university’s website. Previous hearings in DeAngelo’s case have been packed with victims, victims’ families, media and other interested parties.The in-person hearing on Monday will include temperature checks and required face coverings, according to the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office.The crimes associated with the “Golden State Killer” were chronicled in the book “I’ll Be Gone in the Dark”, written by Michelle McNamara. An autopsy to determine when and how 20-year-old Iowa student Mollie Tibbetts died is planned for today.Tibbetts vanished while on an evening jog on July 18. Nearly a month later, a man who confessed to pursuing her as she ran on a country road led authorities to the field where a body believed to be hers was buried under corn stalks, officials said Tuesday.While authorities have yet to confirm the body is hers, they arrested Cristhian Bahena Rivera, 24, on first-degree murder charges.Rivera, who's an undocumented immigrant, told investigators he saw her and got out of his car. He ran beside Tibbetts -- even after she warned him she would call police, officials told reporters Tuesday. 701

An 8-year-old boy in Polk County, Florida caught an 11-foot, 3-inch gator late last month. It was his first real catch despite gator hunting several times with his dad.Grayson Chantley caught the gator on Lake Kissimmee late last month. He says his dad woke him up around midnight to go hunting. "Whenever they're big, I'm just like I want to get this gator," said Chantley.His dad caught it all on tape. Video shows the moment he landed the gator. Photos show the gator's head is almost the size of the 8-year-old. Chantley also showed off his catch to his older brother."I'm just shocked," added Chantley.Florida's state record for the largest gator caught happened in 2010 in Brevard County. The gator was 14 feet 3.5 inches, according to state wildlife officials.Grayson says he's still amazed."It teaches him how to survive. It teaches him nature, teaches him life," said Grayson's dad, Kevin Chantley.The family operates Grape Hammock Fish Camp. Chantley says he has grown up fishing and hunting. 1030

An Uber driver says she was carjacked at gunpoint in North Las Vegas and ended in Kingman, Arizona. But she wasn't alone.Donnelda Schuele says an innocent passenger was also caught in the middle of the ordeal that crossed state lines."At one point I was thinking, my poor passenger is really gonna die," Schuele said.Schuele's Saturday Uber pool ride almost turned deadly. She said she picked up a passenger through Uber pool -- a service where drivers can pick-up more than one unrelated customer. She then got another 'ping' to pick up a new customer near 5th Street and Lake Mead Boulevard. A man and a woman got into the backseat at that stop. Not long after she started driving, Schuele says the man pulled out a gun."He goes, 'Go straight. I don't care who you hit. Go straight,'" Schuele said.Hopping on the freeway, they started to make their way down to Arizona."Before the Lake Mead exit, he shoots the gun in the car. He shot it through the floor of the car," Schuele said.She says the man also pistol-whipped the other male passenger sitting in the front seat of the car. "He had hit him on the head with the gun and cracked him really good at the back of his skull,"  Schuele said.The man with the gun kept on telling her to drive towards the mountains."He goes, that's where I'm going to be dumping you guys," Schuele said.She says the man shot the gun out the window several times, hitting a commercial truck."The other passenger is flipping out. I mean he is literally flipping out," Schuele said.As they were passing by Hoover Dam, Schuele says the suspect ordered her and the other passenger to get out of the car. That's when they were able to get help.Arizona troopers said the carjackers continued driving south on State Route 93, leading them on a pursuit. Even though they ran over strip spikes, the alleged carjackers did not stop until they crashed into another vehicle. The man and woman tried to run away but troopers were able to catch them at that point. It was the end of a nightmare for Schuele and her passenger."Thank god for my blessings and that I was able to keep a cool head," Schuele said.An Uber spokesperson says it is investigating the incident and will support police investigation in any way it can. 2355

Anyone looking to buy an appliance may need to wait a while — due to the COVID-19 pandemic, some appliances are currently backordered for several weeks, even up to a few months.Tobie Stanger, a senior editor at Consumer Reports, says that anyone currently in the market for home appliances should be flexible."If you really need a refrigerator, they're out there, but you may not get what you want. So you'll have to be flexible," Stanger said.Consumer Reports has been around since 1936 and works to create a "fair" marketplace for all consumers. Stanger is an appliance expert and says some of the backlogs have to do with the pandemic and global factory shutdowns in the earlier part of the year.Add that to increased use of home appliances and increased demand, and you've got a problem."The companies are trying to ramp it up. They still, in sone cases, cannot find parts," Stanger said. "I have been told by one of our retailers that there are a couple of manufacturers that are not taking new orders until the end of September. So, they're trying, but it's a real grind."The Repair Association supports the aftermarket of "technology products" — anything with a computer chip. Gay Gordon-Byrne, the association's executive director, says the U.S. is overly reliant on China for all electronics."Everything from toys to tractors, refrigerators, cell phones, industrial controls — it is a massive problem if you can't fix that equipment," she said.Gordon-Byrne says that since things are backordered, there's a huge demand for repairs — which creates more problems."About 90% of the stuff on the market today can't be fixed — it either can't be fixed because it's made not to be fixed, or you can't fix it without the (original equipment manufacturer) because they want to make sure they're the only people that can fix it," Gordon-Byrne said.That means consumers are forced to buy new appliances — or, in this case, wait out the backlog.Gordon-Byrne suggests supporting independent, small appliance businesses and repair shops.Consumer Reports has similar advice."We recommend that, in addition to looking at the big box store, that you look at your local independent appliance dealer. They maybe have a reputation for not having as good a price, but we talked to many consumers who were able to get the independent to match the price," Stanger said.Matt Zieminski, a board member at The Repair Association, says not to ignore the refurbished option."There is actually a thriving refurbish effort right now where a repair shop will go around and pick up those units, take the effort to pick them up, clean them make them as good as new again and then resell them," Zieminski said.It may not be convenient, but the pandemic is forcing everyone to get creative and perhaps be patient to get what was once taken for granted. 2835
