Utah Sen. Mike Lee announced Friday that he has tested positive for COVID-19.In a statement released on Twitter, Lee says he experienced symptoms Thursday morning and took a test on the advice of doctors. The Senator says his symptoms are "consistent with longtime allergies."The announcement comes just hours after the news that President Trump and the First Lady had also tested positive for the coronavirus.On Tuesday, Lee met with Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney Barrett. The two sat in chairs that were distanced several feet apart but took a photo before the meeting in which they were closer together. Tropical Storm Epsilon has strengthened into a Category 1 hurricane.As of 11 p.m. Tuesday, Epsilon is moving toward the northwest near 13 mph.This general motion is expected to continue tonight, followed by a slightly slower west-northwestward motion on Wednesday.A turn toward the north-northwest is expected on Thursday.On the forecast track, Epsilon is forecast to move closer to Bermuda on Thursday and make its closest approach to the island on Thursday night.Epsilon now has maximum sustained winds near 75 mph with higher gusts. Additional strengthening is forecast during the next day or two.A Tropical Storm Watch is in effect for Bermuda.In the most active hurricane season on record, in 2005, late-season storms continued late into the year. (AP) — Kanye West's petition to appear on New Jersey's ballot as a presidential candidate fails to pass legal muster because signatures are incomplete, and in some cases appear written in the same hand. That's according to a formal complaint filed with the state on Wednesday by election law attorney Scott Salmon. Salmon, a Democrat, filed the objection with the state Division of Elections after reviewing the more than 1,300 signatures West submitted. New Jersey requires presidential candidates to get 800 signatures to appear on the ballot, but Salmon says he counted more than 600 that were in some way defective. The petition shows that a number of signatures appear written by the same hand, including lower-case i's dotted with a small circle. 774

Uber and Lyft are pushing a proposition this November they say is vital to their survival in California.And the ads are already starting. At issue is Proposition 22, which would carve an exemption into state law to allow the rideshare companies to continue employing drivers as independent contractors. Otherwise, they would have to reclassify the drivers as employees, guaranteeing them a swath of rights and protections, as mandated by Assembly Bill 5, which the state passed in 2019. Prop 22 would allow the rideshare companies to continue employing drivers as independent contractors, but guarantees them a minimum pay and also money for health insurance once they work a certain number of hours. "I only do this because it fits my lifestyle and what I do," said Chelsea Scott, a San Diego musician who drives for Uber and Lyft. "We're not getting benefits. We don't get any of those things, and I knew that coming into this. This wasn't a trick of any kind."Uber, Lyft, and Doordash released a new 30-second television ad that makes claims about the timing and impact of the law. First, it says California politicians passed AB 5 amid skyrocketing unemployment. Truth be told, the bill was signed into law in September 2019, before the coronavirus was even discovered. At the time, the state's unemployment rate was 4.2%. In August, it was 13.3%.However, the ad follows that with a key point, under AB 5, it will be illegal for rideshare drivers to operate as independent contractors in California. The narrator says that is "threatening to shut down rideshare and food delivery services." Truth be told, AB 5 does not shut down the services, but the services themselves could make the decision to shut down, which Uber and Lyft threatened to do in California last month after a court decision did not go in their favor. San Diego employment attorney Dan Eaton says overall the core point of the ad stands that jobs could be cut."They're saying, 'All right, fine, don't do this, but then don't complain when Uber and Lyft pull out of California,'" he said. The ad says Prop 22 "protects" drivers' abilities to work as independent contractors and saves critical jobs. Two businesses decided to close their doors for a day in reaction to white supremacist Richard Spencer’s speech at Michigan State University. The Carpathia Club in Sterling Heights, Michigan said it got a call from Attorney Kyle Bristow. He wanted to book a meeting on Sunday at the club for about 100 people.  “It was a law firm having a meet and greet. I didn’t think anything negative about it,” said Carsten Grotioh of the Carpathian Club.  “Then Sterling Heights Police came in and asked to speak to management.  They told me they heard there was going to be a Neo-Nazi gathering here on Sunday.”Grotioh learned that Bristow had represented Spencer as a lawyer, and the meeting was supposed to include Spencer’s supporters. He didn’t just cancel the reservation. He closed his business for the day. The owner of the Tipsy McStagger Pub in Warren said he had a similar experience. He got a call from Bristow’s Foundation for the Market Place of Ideas. He was told the organization wanted to host a networking meeting on Monday. When someone came into his business and informed him the networking involved people who supported a white nationalist, he says he was disgusted. “I said absolutely not are they coming to our bar. I mean, we are a neighborhood bar. I have been in this community 50 years. I retired from the Warren Police Department. I have seen enough hate. Our bar is what it is. It is a neighborhood bar. Everyone is welcome,” said John Vostoris, the owner of Tipsy McStagger Pub. Vostoris also decided to close his business to avoid any gathering there by people who planned to attend the event. The Anti Defamation League says standing up to hate, while not infringing on free speech is exactly what everyone needs to do.“It is not something we want to see in our state,” said Heidi Budaj, the ADL’s Michigan Regional Director. She says the fear is hate speech leads to action.  Nationwide there was a 57% increase in anti-Semitic incidents from 2016 to 2017. In Michigan, there was a 13% increase overall. “We want our state to be known as a welcoming place that embraces diversity.
