The Army Criminal Investigation Division (CID) has confirmed that a soldier who was wanted in connection with the disappearance with Pfc. Vanessa Guillen shot and killed himself during an interaction with police Wednesday morning. In their statement, CID also confirmed that a civilian suspect had been taken into custody by the Texas Rangers in connection with Guillen's disappearance. The civilian, an estranged wife of a former Fort Hood soldier, is currently being held in the Bell County jail. The Army did not identify either suspect in their statement. The announcement came as Guillen's family delivered a powerful press conference in Washington, calling on Congress to investigate her disappearance and sexual harassment in the military.During that press conference, the family said they believe that remains that were found in Texas on Tuesday were Guillen's.Family members also said her superior officers sexually harassed Guillen before her disappearance. They said that before her disappearance, Guillen told family members and other soldiers that she was being harassed by her superiors. However, she did not report the abuse to her superior officers because she feared retribution.Guillen's sister gave an impassioned speech in which she accused Army officials of "lying to her face" throughout the investigation into Guillen's disappearance.Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, D-Hawaii, appeared at the press conference along with the family and echoed calls for a Congressional investigation."We need to know why she did not get the help when she needed it," Gabbard said.Guillen, 20, was last seen around 11:30 am in the Regimental Engineer Squadron Headquarters' parking lot at Fort Hood on April 22.It wasn't until late June that the Army said it suspected foul play in connection with Guillen's death. CID now says it is investigating claims that Guillen was sexually harassed prior to her disappearance.According to a statement from the Army Criminal Investigation Division (CID), partial human remains were found during a search of an area of interest close to the Leon River in Bell County on Tuesday. CID has not yet confirmed the identity of the remains. 2169

Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney Barrett served for nearly three years on the board of private Christian schools that effectively barred admission to children of same-sex parents and made it plain that openly gay and lesbian teachers weren't welcome in the classroom. The policies that discriminated against LGBTQ people and their children were in place for years at Trinity Schools Inc., which has schools in Indiana, Minnesota and Virginia. The schools are affiliated with the insular community People of Praise that has its roots in its own interpretation of the Bible. Both Barrett and her husband are longtime members of the group, and at least three of their children attended the Trinity School at Greenlawn, in South Bend, Indiana. The Associated Press spoke with more than two dozen people who said the community's teachings have been consistent for decades, holding that homosexuality is an abomination against God, sex should occur only within marriage, and marriage should only be between a man and a woman."Trinity Schools does not unlawfully discriminate with respect to race, color, gender, national origin, age, disability, or other legally protected classifications under applicable law, with respect to the administration of its programs," Trinity Schools, Inc. President Jon Balsbaugh, said an email to The Associated Press.A man who was a student at the time Barrett served as a trustee told The Associated Press that he was directed to tell gay parents of prospective students that they would not be welcome at the school while giving tours. Prior to Barrett's arrival on the board, the school voted to limit admissions to children of legal y married couples of single parents. At the time of the decision, gay marriage had not been legalized.During her confirmation hearings last week, Barrett was questioned about her views on protections for LGBTQ+ individuals. While she attempted to sidestep most answers on policy questions — as is precedent in Supreme Court confirmation hearings — Barrett did use the term "sexual preference" while telling lawmakers that she found discrimination against gay people "abhorrent."Generally thought to be outdated, "sexual preference" is deemed as offensive by "GLAAD" because it implies that a person's sexuality is a "choice" that can be "cured." Barrett later apologized for using the term when confronted by Sen. Mazie Hirono, D-Hawaii. 2403

Swishing with mouthwash can help freshen that mask breath, and, new research suggests, reduce the amount of coronavirus in the mouth and may help reduce the spread of the virus.Physicians and scientists at the Penn State College of Medicine studied the effect of rinsing with a neti pot, peroxide sore-mouth cleansers, mouthwashes and a 1 percent solution of baby shampoo, which is often used by head and neck doctors to rinse the sinuses. All of the products are currently available to consumers, many over-the-counter.They found several of the nasal and oral rinses had “a strong ability to neutralize human coronavirus, which suggests that these products may have the potential to reduce the amount of virus spread by people who are COVID-19 positive,” the college said in a written statement.Researchers used human coronaviruses that are similar to SARS-CoV-2, the coronavirus strain that causes COVID-19. The “outer envelopes of the human coronavirus tested and SARS-CoV-2 are genetically similar,” the researchers stated.“While we wait for a vaccine to be developed, methods to reduce transmission are needed,” said Craig Meyers, the professor who led the study. “The products we tested are readily available and often already part of people’s daily routines.”The study looked at the effectiveness of the various products when they interact with a solution containing a strain of human coronavirus at intervals of 30 seconds, one minute and two minutes. The 1 percent baby shampoo solution inactivated more than 99.9 percent of the human coronavirus after being in contact for two minutes. The mouthwash and gargle products were also 99.9 percent effective in inactivating the human coronavirus, but after only 30 seconds of contact. The findings from Penn State College of Medicine add to findings earlier this year that showed certain types of oral rinses could inactivate SARS-CoV-2.Meyers said the next step in this line of research is to evaluate products like mouthwashes in COVID-19 positive patients to see if they reduce the viral load. The study’s results were published this week in the Journal of Medical Virology. 2137

Supporters and opponents of the recent toppling of a Confederate monument in North Carolina turned out in Chapel Hill on Saturday to assert their stances.Seven arrests were made in connection to a gathering on McCorkle Place, the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill media relations office said."Three arrests were for assault, the fourth for destruction of property and the fifth arrest for resisting an officer. The sixth arrest was for assault, destruction of property and inciting a riot. We are awaiting information on charges for the seventh arrest," the school said.Photos: Protesters topple Confederate statue at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill? The rival rallies came after 250 protesters knocked over the University of North Carolina's controversial "Silent Sam" Confederate statue at the school on Monday night. On Saturday people congregated at and near the spot where the statue was torn down, news footage showed.
