SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - After losing her son in 2015, a San Diego mother devoted herself to making sure all veterans and fallen service members were honored. Brenda Kaesler says she first learned about Wreaths Across America (WAA) when she laid her son Jeffrey to rest. "He had the best smile of anyone I've ever seen. He just lit up the room. And of course that's a mother talking, but other people have said the same thing!" said Brenda. Brenda says Jeffrey suffered a traumatic brain injury in Iraq, which lead to a brain aneurysm and his death several years later. Each year the nonprofit raises money to put wreaths on the graves of veterans and fallen service members. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A World War II veteran is being honored not only for his service to our country but to the San Diego community.With the help of former students, current students, and staff at Hilltop High School in Chula Vista, the library was dedicated to World War II veteran Tom Rice. The lifelong Coronado resident was an Army paratrooper in the 101st Airborne Division on D-Day. He was the first to jump out of his C-47 after it crossed the English Channel.RELATED: Retired Chula Vista teacher grateful for war hero's inspirationRice taught U.S. government in the Sweetwater Union High School District for more than 30 years, mostly at Hilltop High.The surprise was unveiled to Rice on Thursday. "Everyone has given me their grace, and I have nothing to return but just my presence, and that was it. The two women say Rice didn't talk about the war when he was a teacher; it wasn't until years later they learned of his bravery. "We are honored to know him and honored by what he did for us as students and what he did for our country," said Cappos Hardy.Rice is well known for returning to Normandy to reenact his D-Day jump in honor of those who never made it home. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A team of scientists at UC San Diego is getting into the beach business."We looked around and said 'what's the most important thing that we could possibly make?" said Biology Professor Stephen Mayfield. "And that answer is obvious. Flip flops and surfboards."Much more important than the products themselves is what they are made of. Mayfield wants to make plastic products out of more sustainable materials than the traditional petroleum. He says extracting the oil from algae is a much cleaner process. And because it is biodegradable, old and worn-out flip-flops and surfboards won't sit in landfills for thousands of years.The surfboards are virtually indistinguishable from traditional boards, and only cost about five dollars more. Mayfield says about a dozen professional surfers are already using algae boards in worldwide competition.His team at UCSD is working with a local manufacturer to bring the boards to market. Mayfield expects them to be ready by the end of spring.The flip flops are currently in the prototype stage. Mayfield plans to distribute several pairs to UCSD students this summer for testing. He hopes they will be ready for sale to the public by next year."My dream would be if we could make all the flip-flops in the world out of this material. This would have an enormous benefit to the planet."Mayfield's team are experimenting with the chemistry to control how quickly the flip-flops will biodegrade. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — An anonymous businessman and San Diego Sheriff's deputies delivered some much needed holiday joy ahead of Thanksgiving to families.The Sheriff's department says a local businessman, who wishes to remain anonymous, donated ,000 in cash and ,000 in grocery gift cards to be given to local families in need. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A San Diego woman said a scammer used the military to trick her into paying for a phony apartment rental."We were looking to move during this tough time, which is kind of already more stressful than it normally would be,” said Maci, who declined to use her last name.She searched various websites and thought she found a good deal on Craigslist for a place downtown on Market Street. Through email, the supposed owner said his name was Matthew Sherman, a sergeant stationed at Naval Station Rota in Spain. He said he was looking for a long-term renter and sent Maci a link with photos and an Airbnb site that looked legitimate."Along with the presence of the military, presence of the Airbnb website, I felt safe in the process,” Maci said.She exchanged emails and text messages to get more information about the apartment. She wired ,600.“There was this sense of pressure because I was so worried that this great deal was going to disappear,” Maci said.It turns out that the listing was fake. Maci said the profile photo used by the man pretending to be Sgt.
