But how safe are these activities during the pandemic?Many businesses are doing their best to create safe, socially distanced and fun activities for families this fall.Benton Family Farms in Kentucky is encouraging people to still come out and grab a pumpkin this year."We probably have the best crop you could ever imagine," says Mary Marcum.Marcum's family has owned Benton Family Farms for more than 70 years. The pandemic has hit her family's nonprofit business extremely hard, but they're still committed to bringing some fun events to people in the autumn months."We’re actually having a craft show this weekend. I took that opportunity because all of the high schools were shut down, they couldn’t have their normal [craft exhibit]. Crafting is a big thing here," says Marcum.Dr. Kenny Banh is an emergency physician and Assistant Dean of Undergraduate Medical Education at UCSF-Fresno. Dr. Banh says certain outdoor events could be safe for families this fall."I think all outdoor activities, if done properly, can be done safely, and that includes pumpkin patches and stuff like that," says Dr. Banh.He says following local and state ordinances is key. Also, don't assume that just because an event is happening, that all safety precautions are being taken to protect people from spreading COVID-19."Make sure you’re aware of the difference between [the business being] open, we should do this to what you should be doing. on Interstate 41/94 killed two semi truck drivers and seriously injured two other people.Racine County Sheriff Chris Schmaling said as a semi truck heading south on the interstate tried to change lanes they hit a construction barrier that pushed the median into the northbound lanes.Three other passenger vehicles heading north collided as a result. Schmaling said a second semi truck heading north tried to avoid the collision causing it to veer off the road and crashed before bursting into flames.The sheriff said they received several 911 calls reporting the crash and explosions. He attributed the explosion sounds to tires in the crash heating up then blowing up."In my 24 years on this job and this is the worst accident I’ve ever been a part of," said Schmaling.The crash shut down I-94 and frontage roads to traffic for several hours causing lenthy back ups. The sheriff said emergency responders had difficulty getting to the scene.Schmaling urged drivers to be cautious driving in extreme construction zones, adding a small mistake can have a devastating impact."These are interstate speeds were talking about and ultimately it cost him his life and the life of another human being, and I hope and pray that the lives of the others are right now in the hospital getting care don’t lose their lives as well. It's hard to move cookies when the CDC advises against getting close enough to sell them in person.Christopher "CT" Todd, who leads his daughter's Girl Scout troop and helps run the Sugar n' Spice diner, is feeling the pinch on both ends. The diner is operating with a skeleton crew; the cookies are piling up, uneaten, in scouts' garages and spare rooms."Several troops, really, across the nation are stuck with an excess inventory of cookies that they were going to sell in front of Walmart and Kroger," he said. It's not enough for the girls to eat them themselves. Troops depend on cookie sales to fund activities for the coming year.So Todd and business partner Adam Mayerson came up with a way to help local restaurants and scouts like Lucy at the same time — pair them up.Their initiative is called Business Bosses Supporting Cookie Bosses.
