(KGTV) — Oceanside city officials are asking for developers to submit their bids to create an "iconic" downtown sign for the city, similar to areas of the county like the Gaslamp District, North Park, and Escondido.The city's request for proposals calls for a sign that will act as a new landmark and "the heart of the Sunset Market" at the intersection of Tremont Street and Pier View Way.The sign must be an "over-the-road" style sign that spans the intersection and aims to, "create a 'place' that locals and visitors are invited to enjoy for decades to come," the city says.Candidates can submit an initial design by January 13, 2021. The top five candidates will be granted ,000 and four weeks to flesh out their designs, budget, and other aspects. The city's Property and Business Improvement District will then choose the best three to go before a public vote. OAKLAND, Ca. — You might have forgotten what it felt like to be in a theater that’s packed with people, watching a movie on a big screen.Carlos Courtade remembers the connection.“You came for the feeling, like you were part of something,” he said.He remembers the energy that this pandemic has turned into emptiness inside his theater, The New Parkway, in Oakland, California.Courtade is The New Parkway’s director of community outreach.“We already, as an independent movie theater, pride ourselves on having some of the lowest ticket prices around town and also, at the same time, paying our employees the most out of a living wage, more than any other movie theater around, so already our margins are already really, really narrow,” Courtade said.Courtade is familiar with the script that’s been written for theaters in 2020.Hundreds of theaters have closed, and many will never show films again.But The New Parkway is unique, and that’s easy to see when you look at its theaters. Instead of seats, there are couches, giving it more of a basement or living room type feel than a theater.What’s also unique is what is keeping them in business.“Unlike a lot of movie theaters around, we had the benefit of having a full-sized kitchen,” Courtade said.The kitchen is a plot twist that’s keeping the lights on at a movie theater that hasn’t shown a movie in nine months.The New Parkway’s staff prepare and package food it typically would serve in its theater but now sell it to customers who order online.“For the most part, it’s been enabling us to keep our heads above water,” Courtade said.The food helps pay the rent at a time when the movie-less theater is missing 0,000 a month in revenue.But when you look around Oakland, like many cities, you can see why just being open is a win.“I don’t think anyone knows what the impact is going to be long-term,” said Marcus Osborne, who started working as a manager at The New Parkway during the pandemic.As coronavirus, social distancing, and isolation threaten movie theaters today, the threat of tomorrow for this industry beyond this pandemic, if you ask Osborne, is whether customers will ever fully come back.“How are we going to continue to make movie theaters and other forms of entertainment important to people if they’ve found a way to live without it?” he asked.“I’ve heard a lot of people say they wouldn’t come back to the theater even post-pandemic,” Courtade added.The New Parkway says it won’t fully reopen until there is a vaccine readily available.It's hard to predict the ending to this pandemic, but like a movie, there is a moral in the story of businesses like this one: finding a way through, no matter what.“Sometimes you just have to think outside the box,” Courtade said. “Something that might not be obvious or clear right away shouldn’t prevent you from looking at things in a different point of view.” 2886

Nurse Theresa Klenk sees plenty of cases of heatstroke at the New Jersey hospital where she works.But when her husband, a UPS driver, was admitted with symptoms incurred during a shift driving a brown delivery truck with no air conditioning, she decided to do something.Klenk created a petition on change.org in July urging UPS to provide air conditioning in its trucks. It's been signed more than 210,000 times.But UPS is not planning to equip its vehicles.Dan McMackin, a UPS spokesperson, told CNNMoney that air conditioning wouldn't work on its trucks."Our delivery vehicles make frequent stops and the entry doors and rear doors are frequently opened and closed throughout the day, making air conditioning ineffective," he said.McMackin said the company does have a program for drivers feeling adverse effects from heat called Cool Solutions, which focuses on hydration and extra rest before extreme heat conditions."We provide water and ice in all facilities for employees and we have fans in many of our vehicles. We monitor local area temperatures and inform our drivers every morning of the forecast temperatures," he said.The Cool Solutions program doesn't solve any problems, Klenk said.At her husband's facility, the program merely consists of handing out a case of water every morning to the branch's 68 drivers, she said.Heatstroke sets in when the body gets so hot that it stops sweating. At 10 degrees above normal body temperature -- about 107 degrees -- it begins to get too hot for organs to function.The union hasn't been much help with the air conditioning issue, Klenk said.UPS's roughly 260,000 employees belong to the International Brotherhood of Teamsters union. In June, the union reached a new tentative contract with UPS for the main small-package division, ensuring wage rises and creating a part-time weekend force.Klenk, whose husband is with Teamsters, said that the air conditioning issue is not a part of the contract.Andrea Medinaverbeck, a petition signer, commented: "As a former Teamster shop steward for UPS out of Sunnyvale, CA, we have negotiated AC in package cars, but it has always gone by the wayside when other issues arise that unfortunately, the union thinks are more important. In essence, it's been used as a bargaining chip instead of an important issue."Teamsters declined to comment.UPS isn't the only delivery company facing a call for air conditioning. A similar change.org petition aims at FedEx, and has garnered 161,000 of 200,000 desired signatures. OPEC is losing one of its members.The small, gas-rich state of Qatar said Monday that it will leave the oil cartel on January 1 after nearly 60 years of membership. The country's state oil company, Qatar Petroleum, made the announcement in a series of tweets."The withdrawal decision reflects Qatar's desire to focus its efforts on plans to develop and increase its natural gas production," Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, the country's minister of state for energy affairs, was cited as saying in one of the tweets.Qatar is the world's leading exporter of liquefied natural gas, accounting for about 30% of global demand.For a year and a half, Qatar has been under an economic embargo by some of its neighbors including OPEC's de facto leader, Saudi Arabia. In response, Qatar increased its gas production, the mainstay of its economy, last year.It will be the first Middle Eastern country to pull out of OPEC, which only deals with crude oil production. Qatar's contribution has been marginal compared to some of the cartel's biggest producers like Saudi Arabia and Iraq. It pumps about 600,000 barrels a day of the almost 25 million barrels a day from all OPEC members."Qatar is a fairly small producer ... it was not making very much so it's not that significant in itself," said Robin Mills, CEO of Qamar Energy, a consultancy firm based in Dubai.
