The Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation has established a fund worth more than million to aid organizations fighting institutional racism, in the wake of the George Floyd protests.On Wednesday, the foundation, which has been influential in the emergence of the broader Black Lives Matter movement, said it was setting aside million in donations to support black-led grassroots organizing groups. Although there are many groups that use “Black Lives Matter” or “BLM” in their names, only 16 are considered affiliates of the global network.For Black Lives Matter Los Angeles, the network’s first official chapter, the fund will increase its capacity to support families in need of legal aid, public communications strategy and other services after a loved one is killed by police, said organizer Melina Abdullah, who is a professor in the Pan-African Studies department at California State University, Los Angeles.“We’ve been struggling for seven years now with very limited resources,” Abdullah told the AP. “We’re not paid. But we also have real costs, even if we’re not taking salaries.”Renewed energy in the BLM movement has created a need for more resources, she added. “This fund will allow us to move forward in really strong ways.”Racial justice groups across the U.S. have reported receiving tens of millions of dollars in donations, particularly for community bail funds posting bond for protesters arrested in demonstrations. The Barron County Sheriff said the possible sighting of a missing and endangered Wisconsin teen in Miami, Florida doesn't appear to be credible. An AMBER Alert was issued Monday afternoon for 13-year-old Jayme Closs after her parents were found dead in their home. Gas station surveillance video from Miami shows the girl a witness thought to be Jayme. The FBI has yet to confirm it was. Barron County Sheriff Chris Fitzgerald indicated Tuesday it isn't credible. A witness claims to have seen Jayme inside this black SUV with Wisconsin plates Monday afternoon at a Miami gas station. That's 1,700 miles away from where Jayme's last confirmed sighting Sunday afternoon in her hometown. Surveillance video briefly shows a teenage girl sitting in the front passenger seat as the driver pulled up to a gas pump. She doesn't appear to be restrained at the time. Moments before, a man got out of that same vehicle and walked up to another SUV and a truck to talk with others. Miami police shared the possible sighting via social media on Monday night. "We are actively researching that tip," said Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald appeared frustrated at news conference Tuesday that Miami police released information about a possible tip. "Every tip continues to be followed up on and if it's something we need to get out to you, you will get that information and it will come directly from me out to you," Fitzgerald said. Authorities were first alerted to Jayme's disappearance early Monday morning when a 911 call led sheriff's deputies to her home in Barron. Sunscreen does a good job of protecting our skin, but it may not be so good for marine life.Research studies have found that chemicals found in some popular sunscreen products are harmful to ocean ecosystems. And now, after state lawmakers passed a bill Tuesday, Hawaii is set to become the first state in the US to ban the sale of sunscreens that contain oxybenzone and octinoxate.The chemicals that help us by filtering UV rays are causing severe damage to Hawaii's marine environment, according to a study by Haereticus Environmental Laboratory, a nonprofit scientific organization. They show up in coastal waters after beachgoers swim in the ocean and via discharges from wastewater treatment plants.The study found that the chemicals seep into young coral and contribute to coral bleaching, which occurs when an increase in sea temperatures kills the algae that grows inside coral, turning reefs white and eliminating nutrients that sustain other marine life.About 14,000 tons of sunscreen enter the world's reefs every year, according to a 2015 paper published in the journal Archives of Environmental Contamination and Toxicology.Hawaii's legislation?prohibits the sale and distribution of any sunscreen that contains the two chemicals -- oxybenzone and octinoxate -- without a prescription from a licensed physician.WATCH: Discover how scientists and government officials are trying to rescue coral reefs"Hawaii is the first state in the nation to pass a measure of this magnitude.
