SUVA, Dec. 18 (Xinhua) -- There are 60 typhoid cases in Nanoko, with 29 already hospitalized, according to Fiji's Health Ministry.Senior Health Inspector Paula Laqere said Sunday that the increas means that people are not practicing proper hygiene standards. Laqere said most of the communities in Fiji have a really low level of good hygiene practices. The other problem is that some communities in Fiji have very poor sources of clean and safe water and this is what Fijian guests need to be cautious of."Typhoid is basically spread through contaminated water and our hygiene practices. It's an indicator that the sanitation level of any community is really low."A 30 day public health emergency is in place for the village, effective from Dec. 12 to Jan. 12.Recently, Fiji recorded rates of high typhoid fever in the world, said WHO South Pacific Communicable Disease Surveillance and Response Team leader doctor Jacob Kool.Kool said typhoid fever was difficult to diagnose and could be fatal in 10-20 percent of untreated patients.Recent studies showed that infants are commonly affected and are extremely vulnerable to the disease. Outbreaks occur regularly in areas with poor hygiene and sanitation including urban slums, he said.Kool said the only reliable symptom was prolonged fever and blood and stool culture are still the best available diagnostic tests but have a high rate of false negative results. He said therefore suspected typhoid cases should be treated regardless of the result of lab tests and ciprofloxacin was the recommended therapy for all age groups.Last year AusAID, WHO and UNICEF launched a typhoid fever vaccination campaign in Fiji.

WASHINGTON, Dec. 21 (Xinhua) -- NASA's Dawn spacecraft has sent around 10,000 pictures of the giant asteroid Vesta back to Earth for the first time since its launch in 2007, the U.S. space agency announced Wednesday. The images were taken from an average altitude of 209 km, the closest the spacecraft can get. From the images, scientists could see Vesta's stippled and lumpy surface in great detail, and its many small craters, grooves, and lineaments. The fine scale of the images highlights small outcrops of bright and dark material. With these new discoveries, scientists believe that studying Vesta can help decode the early history of the solar system.Dawn will maintain its low-altitude orbit for another 10 weeks before moving to a higher orbit for another round of photo-taking.Launched in 2007, the 446 million U.S. dollar project aims at studying the chemical composition of Vesta's surface and probing its interior structure.Dawn will leave Vesta in July next year and arrive at the dwarf planet Ceres in February 2015.

SANYA, Hainan, Dec. 4 (Xinhua) -- The five BRICS nations intend to focus and work together on developing alternative energy sources. When Bu Xiaolin, vice governor of China's coal-rich Inner Mongolia autonomous region, spoke over the weekend in front of hundreds of BRICS delegates on regional energy strategies, she mentioned little of the fossil fuels that have long contributed to the region's growth.Like many other speakers at the 1st BRICS Friendship Cities and Local Governments Cooperation Forum, which ran from Dec. 1-3 in Sanya, Hainan province, she devoted large part of her speech to discussing wind and solar energy."Facing the prospects of running out of fossil energy and the related environmental issues, developing new energy is an inevitable choice," said Bu.The forum at this seaside resort over the weekend attracted hundreds of local governors, scholars and business people from the BRICS nations -- Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa -- to discuss city-to-city cooperation, and new energy was among the top agenda topics.Consensus had been reached at the forum that the five countries should strengthen dialogue and cooperation for provincial and local partnerships, including infrastructure, green economy and technology transfer."We are very willing to cooperate with BRICS countries on new energy innovations, promotion and market development," said Bu.According to Bu, Inner Mongolia has huge potential in new energy, with 380 million kilowatts of exploitable wind power resources, accounting for more than half of China's on-shore wind power resources. The region is aiming for a total installed capacity of 33 million kilowatts for wind power and one million kilowatts for solar power by the end of 2015, she added. At national level, the Chinese central government expects to bring the country's total wind power installed capacity up to 150 million kilowatts in the next five years, according to national development plans.Meanwhile, in Brazil, there is movement to replace fossil energy with new energy in daily use, said Jailson Lima Da Silva, State Representative of the National Union of State Legislatures of Brazil. The country is working to increase the nation's wind power capacity, and new energy is expected to account for 65 percent of the nation's total energy consumption, he said."Brazil is optimistic on wind power exploitation, which will be one of the major fields of future investment," he said.Silva expressed hopes to work with China on new energy, especially solar power and biomass energy. "Brazil has large potential in solar energy, while China is a leading producers of solar equipment," he said.According to Mlibo Qoboshiyane, a member of the Executive Council of Eastern Cape, South Africa, the African nation is also investing extensively in wind and solar energy.South Africa has just unveiled a 12-billion-U.S.-dollar program on renewable energy development, which would largely be spent on wind and solar power and reduce the use of traditional energies, said the official. It would be helpful to exchange technologies and valuable information between the BRICS countries to keep consumption of new energies sustainable and affordable, he said.

ACCRA, Dec. 19 (Xinhua) -- A strange disease has hit inhabitants of the Amansie West District in the Ashanti Region of Ghana, near Kumasi, 270 km north of the capital, claiming two lives, health officials said here on Monday.Director of Public Health Dr. Joseph Amankwa told Xinhua that the disease, which had been identified as Laffa viral hemorrhagic fever, and had symptoms similar to those of malaria, caused victims to bleed to death.Dr. Amankwa said he received information about the infection over the weekend but indicated that no other details were made available."We are sending a team to the affected area to verify what the actual situation is to determine our next action. We are also liaising with the World Health Organization to gather enough data on the infections and soon information will be sent out to the public," he said.According to reports carried by local Joy fm radio station, the disease was the first of its kind in the country. The reports quoted health officials as saying infection was passed on from infected rodents like mice and rats and was highly contagious."About two months ago, a young man of 19 years came to our health center here and complained of malaria, so we treated him for malaria but suddenly, blood started coming from the nose, mouth, anus and the ears, and immediately he died," Municipal Director of Health in the Amansie West District, Dominic Brobbey told the radio station. He warned that although the situation was under control, there were no drugs to treat the disease in Ghana, and therefore urged government to expedite action to acquire the necessary drugs to prevent further deaths.
