Airlines are prohibited from banning specific breeds of dogs on board flights as service or emotional support animals, the US Transportation Department said Thursday, amid controversy over safety and passengers abusing the policies for emotional support animals. The guidelines outlined by department officials appear to invalidate a recently-announced Delta Air Lines policy barring "pit bull type dogs" from traveling as service or emotional support animals.Airlines are allowed a case-by-case determination of whether an animal is safe to travel, and airlines can also require people traveling with emotional support animals to check in at the airport lobby, rather than online, to allow an airline official to review the animal."The airline does have the authority to do an individualized assessment of any dog, every breed of dog, and if any dog -- no matter the breed -- is determined to pose, or deemed to pose a risk to the health or safety of other passengers, the airline is free to deny boarding," a department official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, told reporters on a conference call explaining the change. The Transportation Department is developing new long-term rules for passengers with service animals. The department will not seek to invalidate any airline policies prohibiting animals other than dogs, cats and miniature horses -- the most common species of service animals -- from traveling as emotional support animals, the officials said.Airlines will have one month to change any policies that do not comply with the interpretation. They did not specify which policies or airlines they believe are not in compliance. The airline industry said it supports the DOT guidelines because of its concerns about passengers abusing the allowances for emotional support animals, or ESAs."The availability of fraudulent ESA credentials online has enabled people who are not truly in need of animal assistance to abuse the rules and evade airline policies regarding animals in the cabin," said Airlines for America, an industry group. "With over a million passengers bringing ESAs on flights last year, airlines and airports saw a sharp increase in incidents such as biting and mauling by untrained animals. In one of the more recent incidents, a flight attendant who was bit by an emotional support animal two weeks ago 2352

Aimee Bouc knew Austin Eubanks the way few people did.“He was not so much the person he was on TV. He wasn’t so serious," she says. Aimee was once married to Eubanks. The two met as teens and went on to have two children. Many knew Eubanks as a survivor of the 1999 Columbine shooting. He was shot in the hand and knee in the attack. He battled the impact of addiction and trauma over the 20 years that passed since the shooting. “I turned to substances to cope. That was the answer for me," Eubanks said in an interview in April for a story marking two decades since Columbine. Eubanks became a national spokesperson. He gave talks about his struggle becoming a beacon for others struggling the way he did. "I think it’s really important that not only as survivors of trauma, but survivors of addiction, speak out and share their stories," Eubanks said in April, "You never know when your story is going to change the life of somebody else."Austin wasn't able to fully escape the darkness of addiction. In May he was found dead in his home, the victim of an overdose. "There was so much pressure put on him to be this perfect person in the eyes of the world," Aimee says. "He didn’t feel he could actually go and get the treatment when he did go back to it.”In the months leading up to his death, Aimee suspected he was using again. “I believe there was always a fight. I don’t believe he was always using, believe that was more recently, Aimee says. "It never stops being a struggle. I don’t think addiction is something you can just stop struggling one day it’s always a work in progress." Now, as opioid companies face several lawsuits over the opioid crisis, Aimee says Austin would want more. “He wouldn’t want it to stop there," Aimee says. "In America, I believe strongly we need to start tackling and treating mental health and anxiety, depression, anything, any kind of problems. Almost like a dental check up in terms of insurance."Aimee knows progress in fighting the opioid crisis is too late for Austin, but she believes his life will still help others. "His story and the power behind Columbine really put him front and center of the opioid addiction and his TED talks and everything that he did," she said. "He brought a complete level of awareness and helped so many people and I've read their comments on how he helped them shape their lives. It just brought me tears of joy.”Aimee recently launched 2431

A minor league baseball team has apologized to Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez after the team aired a Memorial Day video in which the New York Democrat was depicted among "enemies of freedom.""We're embarrassed we allowed this video to play without seeing it in its entirety first. We unconditionally apologize to Rep. Ocasio-Cortez (@AOC) in addition to our fans, community and those we hurt. It was a mistake and we will ensure that nothing like it ever happens again," the Fresno Grizzlies, a Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, tweeted. The Grizzlies' apology came after the team showed a video at a game on Memorial Day that features a speech from former President Ronald Reagan alongside a series of patriotic and military images. A woman was arrested and charged after trying to attack a Burger King clerk over the wrong order in Livonia, Michigan, back in January.According to police, the woman got food from the Burger King and then came back the next day, demanding a refund because one of her burgers had tomatoes on it. Police say the clerk told the woman they could give her food or a credit, but couldn't give her money back.Police then say the woman got angry and threw the cookie rack at the clerk, tried to climb over the counter and threw a wet floor sign. It was all caught on surveillance video seen above.Eventually, the woman left but came back and threw food at the clerk's face. Less than two weeks after the Burger King incident, the woman also caused a disturbance at a Cricket Wireless store in Warren, Michigan. Police say she was disrupting display cases and stole a phone, and that she was mad she didn't get a phone with her new contract. In Livonia, she was charged with assault and battery, obstruction of justice, disorderly conduct and malicious damage of property. In Warren, she was charged with larceny and disturbing the police. 1141
