SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- America’s Finest City ranked high on a new list of best cities for jobs in 2019, according to WalletHub. San Diego ranked 28th out of 182 cities overall. Chula Vista also made the list, coming in 123rd place. According to the report, the national unemployment rate has fallen to an 18-year low of just 3.7 percent, while hiring also is up. College graduates are also beginning to see the benefits of the strong job market. According to the National Association of Colleges and Employers, employers plan to hire 16.6 percent more members from the class of 2019 compared to the previous year. Though San Diego secured a strong spot on the list, many cities ranked higher. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — After all these years, people still love coming to the San Diego Zoo to see the California condors.At one point in the 1980's, there were only 22 of them living outside captivity. The zoo began a major effort to save the species, getting them to reproduce and then releasing them across the state. It's worked. There are now more than 250 flying across the American West and Mexico.RELATED: How the wild parrots of San Diego arrived in America's Finest City"It's really good for us, actually, because they help to reduce all the bad things that cause our sicknesses and ill health. So it's pretty cool," says Maggie Stack, a San Diego State graduate student. Stack is part of a new SDSU team working with the San Diego Zoo to save the bird.As much success as the zoo has had with the condor program, new research shows that the condors in the wild are still under threat."The condors are still critically endangered, so there's still a long way for them to go until we can have a really self-sustaining population," Stack said.RELATED: New giraffe calf joins in the herd at San Diego Zoo exhibitA big reason for that is that the same pollutants that nearly killed the condor off so many years ago are still hurting them today. Stack's team is doing research suggesting that the condors are still dealing with lead poisoning and the chemical DDT, which was banned nearly 40 years ago."Those can cause egg shell thinning in condors," Stack added. "So we're seeing a significant amount of egg shell thinning in condors that live on the coast."A thinner shell means a greater chance of the egg being crushed, often accidentally by the parent condors trying to keep the egg safe.The researchers hope their work at SDSU can help solve the problem. 1768

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A trip to get some fast food in the Midway District turned into a nightmare after an encounter with a homeless woman and a syringe.Just before noon last Thursday, Ralph Bedoe was in the drive-thru line at a Taco Bell on Midway Drive. It was the busy lunch hour. He ordered but had to wait once he reached the pay window. As he waited, he saw a homeless woman in her 40s about 25 feet away."She was rambling, throwing up her hands, talking to herself," said Bedoe.He says the woman hit the hood and window of a bus in the parking lot, before she headed toward him."She kind of hit my mirror and started rambling ... I said 'Do you need something?' Don't know if that's when something triggered," said Bedoe.Bedoe's driver side window was open. His arm was resting there."All of a sudden she pulled up her left hand, which had a bag and a syringe with a needle sticking out. She pushed my hand into the car, and when she pushed my hand, the syringe entered my hand," said Bedoe.The woman then smacked his window and wandered off."Disbelief, hoping you're going to wake up from this," said Bedoe.As the shock wore off, the new father thought of his 6-month-old son. "If I did contract something, how is that going to change my life with him? How is this going to change with length of life with him?" said Bedoe.Bedoe must undergo seven months of blood tests to rule out a myriad of diseases, including Hepatitis and HIV. The uncertainty is nerve-wracking."A trip to Taco Bell should not end with a life-changing event," said Bedoe.Bedoe was hit with a ,400 dollar medical bill because he was switching over to new insurance and was not covered at the time. Police have obtained surveillance video from Taco Bell, but haven't yet released it. 1769

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- After being diagnosed with congenital heart disease and having four open heart surgeries and a pacemaker, Cristi Walker was about to have a heart and liver transplant until doctors at UC San Diego wanted to try something else, a pulmonary valve replacement."We got outta surgery I had one question for my husband, what was it? He said 'it was a cow valve' and I thought my life came full circle and a cow made it so I could live a longer life," said Walker.She received a pulmonary valve from a cow and that was back in 2017. Since then, she said she's never felt more happy and healthy."I felt so connected, happy, present and I knew I wanted to share it with others and that’s the idea where Heart Haven came," said Walker.She acquired land, adopted animals and was finally ready to open Happy Heart Haven, a non-profit animal sanctuary in Valley Center with pigs, horses, lambs and of course, cows."This is a place where people can leave all their troubles behind and they can be in the here and now, live in present and fill their heart with joy that animals can bring."She said she was nervous to open amid a pandemic, "What if this fails? What if it doesn’t work, what happens then, it was scary I’m not gonna lie."But she said after several open heart surgeries and a gift from a cow that she said she could never be more thankful for, "I’ve chosen to overcome every obstacle that comes my way, and to live in the moment and live every day as if It were my last."The sanctuary is open for household groups by appointment only, and she said reservations fill up quick. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A San Diego radio station is changing its format.  The announcement comes only days since one of its hosts posted a controversial image on Twitter that stirred outrage across social media.The station’s parent company, Entercom Communications, announced Wednesday that 97.3 will relaunch as “97.3 THE FAN.” The station will now have a 24/7, all-sports format.The station will also broadcast all of the San Diego Padres’ regular season games.RELATED:  Radio show postponed after controversial tweet, new demands from PadresThe social media scandal happened when DJ Kevin Klein published a tweet with an image showing the Coronado Bridge with the text “JUMP*… *to a new morning show.”San Diego Padres Executive Chairman Ron Fowler said in a statement that the organization had been working with the radio station, saying "They have assured us that the challenges we faced with 97.3 FM at the beginning of this season have been addressed and that steps have been taken to make sure they are not repeated."RELATED:  Padres respond after radio host's tweet causes controversy over suicide insensitivityKlein later apologized on Twitter for the photo.
