SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Nearly 6,000 San Diego workers have reportedly been laid off amid the coronavirus outbreak, but the actual number could be 60 times higher, according to officials at the San Diego Workforce Partnership. The agency estimates there are at least 350,000 San Diego workers at risk of losing their jobs, the majority of them in service sectors like hotels, restaurants and retail, where there is no option to work from home. However, the state has eliminated the 60-day public layoff notification requirement amid the outbreak, so it is unclear how many people are no longer working. The Employment Development Department reported Friday that from April to May, employers added 18,200 people to their payrolls. Still, the employment situation in San Diego County is dire. From May 2019 to May 2020, payroll employment is still down by 195,800 workers. "The positive thing is that the worst is behind us and we've seen month over month job growth so we're improving," said Alan Gin, an economist at the University of San Diego. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Opponents of  San Diego's new short-term rental regulations are accusing the city council of violating the Brown Act when it passed the new rules earlier this month. A letter drafted by an attorney on behalf of Air B and B, Home Away and Share San Diego was sent to the council Monday. It alleges the council violated the law when it made significant changes to the original proposal up for approval and then voted without allowing for more public comment. What they passed would essentially ban people from renting out anything other than their primary residence or a guesthouse on their property. The opponents are asking the council to hold another hearing. The city council is scheduled to hear a second reading of the short-term rental regulations Wednesday, August 1.  852
