SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A global recruitment company tells 10News there is a concern that the healthcare system is going to be over-run by patients.It brings up questions whether San Diego County has enough nurses to staff hospitals and medical centers if the coronavirus pandemic goes on for an extended period."The problem that we're seeing now, post-pandemic and coronavirus, is that those nurses can't flock to any one area to support people because the problem is, they have to support locally where they are," said Jon Griffith with the recruitment company GQR. Griffith explained there were supply and demand issues with nurses before COVID-19. Now travel nurses, who would typically fill the void are needed in every state, and not necessarily available to travel."We're seeing people called out of retirement," he said. "Nurses and physicians alike being requested to come out and support. Essentially what we're trying to do at GQR is to tap into those resources or new grad nurses, retired nurses, wherever we can to give that local support to these hospitals to try and mitigate that risk."Griffith told 10News the hospitals they've spoken with are aware of potential challenges and are gearing up to make sure people have their healthcare needs met."They are heroes alright," Griffith said. "We see this all on social media. They are on the frontlines still giving great patient care and focusing on that continuity of care and that right there is what this is all about. But nurses have that fear of being understaffed and hospitals are really trying to rise to that challenge right now."10News asked healthcare providers across San Diego County how they will maintain staffing levels as nurses get sick or burned out, and if they have enough staff to backfill any vacancies.Here are the responses we got back.Sharp Healthcare:Yes, definitely a consideration given the unknowns around how long the COVID-19 outbreak will last. Kaiser PermanenteWe are working with our public health partners to manage all aspects of the health care delivery continuum, and so far, our plans are working even as conditions, needs and priorities change. As we do every flu season, we have contingency plans in place to manage both higher numbers of patients in our facilities and illness among staff. Out of extreme caution as we respond to the challenge of coronavirus, employees who may have been exposed to the virus will remain at home for a 14-day observation period. We are able to manage this in part with fully licensed or certified seasonal contract staff. Our Employee Assistance Program continues to work with our caregivers to help manage stress and burnout, such as mindfulness-based stress reduction sessions.In a sign of our commitment to the safety of our employees and patients, we have shifted our interview processes to be completely virtual so that applicants are not coming on our campuses. Also, our new employee orientation is now being conducted online so that we can minimize group sizes and practice social distancing where possible for caregivers.Do we have enough nurses currently to back fill the vacancies we expect?We are focused on protecting our workforce so they can safely treat our patients. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A Girls Empowerment Camp put on by the San Diego Fire Department started Saturday despite some controversy a few months ago. The camp teaches girls what it takes to be a firefighter. The girls learn how to pull hoses, climb ladders, and climb out of windows just like firefighters do on the job. In February, attorney Al Rava sent a letter to the city attorney on behalf of his client, Rich Allison. The letter claimed that the camp was unwelcoming to boys solely based on their sex. RELATED: Girls empowerment camp rescheduled after abrupt cancellationThe camp was canceled, but days later Mayor Faulconer issued a statement saying the camp would go on. The girls are thankful the camp is back on. Many have dreams of being firefighters or paramedics. The camp is hosting another weekend for teens in May. There are still spots available. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego State University football team announced Friday it has added a game against the Brigham Young University Cougars in December to complete its shortened schedule due to the COVID-19 pandemic.The team initially received its schedule from the Mountain West Conference Thursday with a "TBA" game on Dec. 12. That game will now be played against BYU in Provo, Utah.It will be the second straight season that SDSU ends its regular season with the Cougars. Last year on Nov. 30, San Diego State defeated BYU, 13- 3, in what ended up being the Aztecs' final football game at SDCCU Stadium to snap a six-game losing streak in the series and improve to 8-21-1 all-time against Brigham Young.The BYU game will be the sole non-conference game for the Aztecs, excepting any possible post-season play.San Diego State opens its season at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, against UNLV on Oct. 24. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The union representing mental health professionals at Kaiser Permanente facilities in San Diego and across the state hit the picket lines Monday for a five-day strike amid a continued labor standoff. The walkout by the National Union of Healthcare Workers, representing roughly 4,000 psychologists, therapists, psychiatric nurses and other healthcare employees, had been planned in November but was delayed out of respect following the death of Kaiser CEO Bernard Tyson. Union officials said the walkout could result in the shutdown of more than 100 Kaiser clinics and medical facilities ``from San Diego to Sacramento.'' NUHW accused Kaiser of forcing clinicians to ``accept significantly poorer retirement and health benefits than Kaiser provides to more than 120,000 other employees in California.'' ``Mental health has been underserved and overlooked by the Kaiser system for too long,'' Ken Rogers, a Kaiser psychologist, said in a statement released by the union. ``We're ready to work with Kaiser to create a new model for mental health care that doesn't force patients to wait two months for appointments and leave clinicians with unsustainable caseloads.'' But Kaiser accused the union of flatly rejecting a proposals made by a neutral mediator and opting to strike instead of ``working through the mediated process.'' ``In Southern California, the primary contract concern relates to wage increases and retirement benefits,'' said Dennis Dabney, Kaiser's senior vice president of national labor relations. ``The mediator's recommendation includes wage increases of 3%, 2.75%, 2.75%, .5% each year with lump-sum payments in years 2-4 of 0.25%, 0.25% and 0.5% to provide 3% increases per year over the terms of the agreement and a ,600 retroactive bonus. ``While our therapists in Southern California are paid nearly 35% above market, we believe these issues are resolvable,'' he said. Dabney said NUHW workers have the ``same defined contribution plan that nearly a dozen other unions have, and that has been in place for more than four years.'' ``Our current proposal on the table actually enriches this program such that a 3% employee contribution would have a 9% contribution from Kaiser Permanente,'' he said. ``Again, this is no reason to strike. Rather than calling for a strike, NUHW's leadership should continue to engage with the mediator and Kaiser Permanente to resolve these issues.'' NUHW workers also held a five-day statewide strike last December. Union leaders claim that mental-health clinics continue to be understaffed and ``patients are routinely forced to wait six to eight weeks for therapy appointments and clinicians are so overbooked that they have to work after hours trying to help patients who can't wait for care.'' 2783
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — City leaders say they're making strides in overhauling its water department after a disastrous 2018. In a presentation to the Audit Committee Wednesday, city public utilities managers said they had implemented about a dozen reforms after a series of missteps last year. In 2018, thousands of San Diegans received erroneous water bills, which an audit largely blamed on human error. A later audit found that some meter box and lid replacement workers were fudging time cards amid a 22,000 unit backlog. RELATED: New round of complaints on high water bills"We needed to change the culture and make sure that all these issues were addressed," said Johnnie Perkins, San Diego's deputy chief operating officer. Perkins said the Public Utilities Department has implemented new, efficient work strategies. These include getting workers out to the field faster, overhauling how customer service representatives interact with residents, and using software to pick routes that make sense. Previously, for example, workers could be sent to do water meter work in Rancho Bernardo only to be sent to San Ysidro. The city auditor is currently monitoring the progress.RELATED: Audit shows City sent thousands of faulty water billsBut Rodney Fowler Sr., who heads the union that represents meter replacement workers, said the changes aren't addressing obvious issues: The department is understaffed, and the vehicle fleet is unreliable.
