SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The Downtown San Diego Partnership is relaunching a program to help businesses impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.A new round of the organization's Downtown Loyalty program launches at noon on Tuesday. It allows people to buy discounted gift cards to some of downtown's most recognizable restaurants, coffee shops, retail, and services."It's a digital gift card sale," said Sarah Brothers, marketing and communications director for the Downtown San Diego Partnership. "So you're able to buy a gift card to your favorite downtown locations. And for every purchase, you get a free funded by philanthropy."It allows the customer to get more than what they paid for, and it's extra revenue for the business at the receiving end.The program is made possible through fundraising and donations.The first round of the Downtown Loyalty program's gift card sale sold out in four days when it launched in July. It provided nearly ,000 in direct revenue to struggling businesses in downtown San Diego. There is hope the second round of gift card sales will have even more significant impact, with nearly ,000 to support businesses. 1163

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The hospital patient who brutally beat a San Diego nurse faced a judge on Friday for his sentencing. 10News was in the courtroom, where the nurse described how she fought for her life while 41 year-old Geoffrey Brizzolara attacked her.“I stood in his doorway and I said, ‘How may I help you, sir?’ His response was to lift a 25-pound chair over his head and throw it at me,” nursing supervisor Mary Prehoden told the courtroom. “Mr. Brizzolara beat me with his fists. He kicked me and then scratched me and he pulled a handful of hair straight out of my head,” she went on to say.The attack happened last summer at Scripps Mercy Hospital in Hillcrest. He was a patient at the hospital and apparently has a history of mental health issues. He did not know Nurse Preholden.“His actions were deliberate and vicious. I was defenseless,” she told the courtroom.She was joined by other nurses who say that patient violence against nurses is a constant concern across the country. Nurse Trish Mcauliffe told us, “The resources have to be increased- mental health resources.” Mcauliffe described how she was once attacked by a different patient at another hospital. “I ended up with a split lip [and] loose teeth and then he stood in the doorway, laughing.”Friday, Brizzolara was sentenced to one year behind bars, with an option for early-release to a mental health treatment facility.“Every single one of us who chooses to do this for a living is under threat every day in every hospital in this country,” added Prehoden. 1542

The DMV is also recommending that state law enforcement be flexible when reviewing driver license or identification and vehicle registration. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The battle over the Crossroads of the West Gun Show continued Tuesday in Del Mar.The Board that oversees the fairgrounds is reviewing the show that has been hosted at the fairgrounds for the last 28 years.A pro-gun, second-amendment political action committee collected more than 3,100 letters in support of continuing the show in Del Mar.The letters were given to the board for review and consideration. Michael Schwartz, Executive Director of the San Diego County Gun Owners is pushing is pushing for the board to renew the shows contract with no restrictions or limitations."It took us less than a week to collect all these signatures, we could have gotten more. Some are written by entire families who come to the show every year. It is a family event with almost a 30 year history with Del Mar," said Schwartz. Protesters also made an appearance at the board meeting dressed in orange and asking the board to cancel the shows current contract.The Del Mar, Solanna Beach and Encinitas city councils have approved resolutions calling for a ban on the gun shows at the fairgrounds.Guns can be purchased at the show, but California law requires extensive background checks and a waiting period.The board will make a decision to cancel or continue the gun show at it's board meeting in September. 1329

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The Golden Knights offered a spectacular preview aboard the USS Midway, landing on the flight deck. The event was part of the museums Army Day celebration. The day began with an enlistment ceremony. A Japanese-American World War II veteran read the oath of enlistment to the Army’s newest recruits. The celebration marks the first event of its kind aboard the Midway.
