SAN DIEGO (CNS) -- The pink, blue and white colors of the Transgender Flag will fly over the County Administration Center and the San Diego Convention Center Sails Pavilion at sundown Friday in honor of Transgender Day of Remembrance. The Human Rights Campaign reports that so far in 2020 "at least 36 Transgender or gender non-conforming people have been killed by violent means, the majority of whom were Black and Latinx transgender women.""The lives of our Transgendered community members are too often violently taken just because of who they are," said County Supervisor Nathan Fletcher. "We cannot stay silent as the deaths of these humans continue to grow year by year. Lighting up these structures won't solve the challenges the Transgender community faces, but it is a step toward raising greater awareness and support for our Transgender neighbors."Fletcher, in partnership with the County of San Diego's LGBTQ&A Employee Resource Group and the African American Association of County Employees, championed securing the lighting of the iconic San Diego structures."To honor these victims and countless others, we stand in solidarity by lighting the CAC to remember each life lost," said Ben Parmentier, President of the County LGBTQ&A Employee Resource Group."The visibility this lighting provides is a small step to bring awareness to a grim reality for one of the most vulnerable populations in our society. Transgender people also face disproportionate health disparities, harassment, and discrimination. It is incumbent upon all of us with privilege to use our power to do more," Parmentier said.San Diego Convention Center leadership supported this awareness initiative when contacted by the Fletcher's office and county employees."In support of Transgender Day of Remembrance, we will light our iconic Sails Pavilion to honor those who we've lost to anti-Trans violence," said Rip Rippetoe, president and CEO of the San Diego Convention Center. "As an inclusivity-driven convention center, we hope that our action will raise awareness of issues that affect our community." 2103

Another 87 stations were also recommended for funding to these same awardees in subsequent funding batches. The funding awarded Friday includes stations at the following locations:1832 W. SAN DIEGO (CNS) -- San Diego Gas & Electric announced Monday that its residential customers will get a 5% reduction in pricing starting July 1 to help them deal with hot weather while spending more time at home during the COVID-19 pandemic. The new pricing for customers enrolled in the Time-of-Use DR1 pricing plan will last through Oct. 31 and applies to all three time-of-use periods: on- peak, off-peak and super off-peak, according to SDG&E.With the new pricing, a customer using an average of 400 kWh per month could see a bill decrease of about .80 per month, according to the company. For customers in the California Alternate Rates for Energy Program -- a bill discount program that offers a reduction of 30% or more on monthly bills -- an average usage of 400 kWh per month could see a bill decrease of about .96 per month with the new pricing. The California Public Utilities Commission recently approved the new pricing plan, which will also implement a 4% increase in pricing from Nov. 1 through May 31."Given the financial hardships the pandemic has caused, providing some bill relief to our customers as summer approaches was a priority for us, and we are appreciative that the CPUC agreed," said Dan Skopec, SDG&E's vice president of regulatory affairs. "We also encourage our customers to take advantage of the assistance and bill relief programs we have available."Two other energy bill payment assistance programs are available for customers who meet income eligibility criteria. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego County Board of Supervisors Wednesday gave final approval to a measure to reduce light pollution in two rural communities. The amendment to the county's Light Pollution Chapter ordinance covers the Julian and Borrego Springs Community Planning Areas. Both will now be considered "Zone C" to receive a Dark Sky Community designation, which limits the total amount of light per acre and has more restrictive standards for signage or nighttime sports.During their regular meeting on Oct. 28, supervisors approved the ordinance amendment on first reading, and also found it to be exempt from the state's Environmental Quality Act, as it does not affect land use or density.Taking effect in January, the ordinance will support Julian in becoming an International Dark Sky Community and update Borrego Springs' light pollution standards.According to the county, changes willinclude new lighting standards (for color type, levels and shielding) and sign illumination. The county will give existing developments 10-year grace period to come into compliance.Dark skies are important to astronomers for better viewing in rural communities, along with businesses that benefit from related tourism. San Diego County adopted a light pollution policy in 1985.Public outreach sessions found that residents in Borrego Springs and Julian were supportive of new regulations, according to the presentation to the board.Ordinance enforcement will cost an estimated ,000 in fiscal year 2021-22.The cost for residential property owners to upgrade their lighting ranges between and 0, while a retail store owner might pay between 0 and ,600, according to the county. 1697

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County public health officials have reported 3,132 new COVID-19 infections -- the 27th consecutive day with more than 1,000 cases. On Sunday, there were no new virus-related deaths reported.Sunday was the 19th day with more than 2,000 new cases.Another 50 people also were hospitalized, according to Sunday's data, and another seven patients were sent to intensive care units. The county's cumulative cases increased to 145,779 and the death toll remained at 1,402.Ten new community outbreaks were confirmed on Saturday. There have been 60 confirmed outbreaks in the last seven days and 250 cases associated with those outbreaks.A community setting outbreak is defined as three or more COVID-19 cases in a setting and in people of different households over the past 14 days.A complete list of county COVID-19 testing sites, how to make appointments and hours can be found at www.sandiegocounty.gov/content/sdc/hhsa/programs/phs/community_epidemiology/dc/ 2019-nCoV/testing/testing-schedule.html.Though county officials advised residents to avoid holiday gatherings, anyone who participated in a gathering was urged to get tested, as well as people who recently returned from travel, people with any symptoms and people at higher risk for COVID-19, whether or not they display symptoms. In advising against holiday gatherings, San Diego County Supervisors Nathan Fletcher and Greg Cox pointed to a massive uptick in cases after Thanksgiving -- including the region's highest daily total coming three weeks after the holiday with 3,611 cases reported last Friday."We cannot ignore the reality that we are in a bad place right now," Cox said. "We're making a special plea to avoid large gatherings with those outside your immediate family. This one time, this one year."If people have already traveled, they should be extra cautious about spreading the virus, Cox said.According to Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county's public health officer, 44.1% of the county's cumulative cases have been reported after Thanksgiving. San Diego County is on pace to report another 600 deaths due to the virus before the end of January, she said."We don't want to see what happened after Thanksgiving happen again," Wooten said. "We must continue to stay apart to get the spread of the virus under control. If we don't, cases, hospitalizations and deaths will continue to soar."The 11-county Southern California region is still reporting zero available ICU beds. Current stay-at-home orders took effect at 11:59 Dec. 6, and were originally set to end on Monday. 2569
