According to the Humane Society, animal cruelty is one of the earliest and most dramatic indicators that someone may be developing a pattern of seeking power and control by abusing others. The Humane Society says when animals in the home are abused or neglected, it is a warning sign that others in the home may be in danger. “Often times when animals are being abused, people are being abused too,” said Dr. Gary Weitzman, President and CEO of San Diego Humane Society. “That’s why it’s so important to report animal cruelty and neglect when you see it.”Anyone who wants to report animal cruelty is asked to call the Humane Society at 619-299-7012. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The San Diego Sheriff's Department requested the public's help locating a North County woman who disappeared more than seven years ago.Kimberly "Kim" Jo Evans, 48, was last seen on April 30, 2013, by her mother at their Encinitas home. Evans left that morning on foot and has not been seen or heard from since.Evans was last seen wearing a green plaid blouse, green shorts, and carrying a suitcase.She's described as 5'6", weighing about 110 pounds, has reddish-brown hair and brown eyes. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The views from atop of the old light house at Point Loma are off limits to virtually everyone most of the year except two particular twin sisters.Kim Falhlen and Karen Scanlon are volunteers at Cabrillo National Monument.The 67-year-old sisters are tasked with cleaning the rare glass lenses at the top of the lighthouse among other duties for the open tower days held only 3 days a year.“It’s almost in a constant need of repair,” said Kim Fahlen, “the tower wasn’t built for today’s activity.”The sisters grew up in Ohio and say they plan on helping at the tower as long as the park rangers at Cabrillo will let them.“We’re good for a while,” said Karen Scanlon, “we’ll keep doing this until they make us take a desk job.” 756

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The San Diego Metropolitan Transit System is joining the effort to make more affordable housing. The MTS Board of Directors recently greenlit a new 410-unit housing development at the Grantville trolley station. 156 of the units will be affordable and 254 will be market rate ‘student-oriented’ apartments. MTS is partnering with developers Affirmed Housing and Greystar on the project. It is estimated the total population housed on the planned trolley station property will be 1,049 people. The development would be built on top of the current parking lot. The developers will be making their own parking spaces on the site and MTS will be adding 96 replacement parking spots, according to transit officials. In a statement on the prospective parking concerns MTS wrote, “we average about 80 to 120 commuters per weekday that use the park and ride, so we are in the wheelhouse of demand.” MTS says it is currently looking into developing four more of its stations into similar housing in downtown, El Cajon and Chula Vista. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The University of California system has appointed its first-ever Black president in the system’s history, Cal Matters said Tuesday.Michael V. Drake will become the 21st president of the University of California.Drake is making the move after leaving The Ohio State University last week. There, he served as the university’s president from 2014 to 2020.Drake was also chancellor of UC Irvine for nine years and served as the University of California vice president for health affairs from 2000 to 2005.“Much has changed in the 15 years since I was given the privilege of becoming chancellor at UC Irvine, but not my absolute belief in this great University and its time-honored mission,” Drake said. “I look forward to working with the regents, chancellors, students, faculty, staff, alumni, and our broader community as we, together, guide the University through the challenging times ahead.
