MORRISON, Colo. — Alex Biagi lived a normal life for 24 years. He was an athlete and loved art and music. But everything took a turn in 2004.Biagi's left hand started to hurt. At first, he was diagnosed with carpal tunnel syndrome. On Thanksgiving eve in 2004, Biagi fell down his stairs."My ankle gave way," Biagi explained. "That's when we knew something else was going on."Biagi lost use of his arms, hands and legs. It took four years for doctors to figure out what was going on. He was later diagnosed with chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy. The disease is extremely rare."It affects approximately one to two people in 1,000 per year," said Dr. Robert Schabbing with Kaiser Permanente. "Alex has had a severe case of CIDP." When Biagi was first diagnosed, he gave up on art because his hands simply wouldn't allow it. But three years ago, he saw someone on the internet painting with their mouth."I never even thought about doing it that way," he said. "I finally decided to give it a try."For three years, Biagi has been practicing the unique craft and his paintings continue to get better and better.His latest piece of art is making the rounds on the internet. NASA could make history on Tuesday as their spacecraft, OSIRIS-REx, will attempt to land on an ancient asteroid 200 million miles away from Earth.OSIRIS-REx launched in 2016. It arrived at the asteroid, named Bennu, in 2018 and it’s been mapping out the surface working to pick the best location to land ever since.The mission’s operations are headquartered at the University of Arizona.The mission will begin at 2:50 p.m. Arizona time on Tuesday. At 3:12 p.m., OSIRIS-REx will finally touch down on Bennu and collect a sample before heading back to Earth. Dr. Lori Glaze with NASA tells ABC15 the sample will allow researchers to study the ancient secrets of our solar system. She says Bennu also has a 1-in-2,700 chance of impacting Earth in about 150 years or so, so this mission can help researchers work to prevent that.“Helping us refine and reduce the uncertainties on Bennu’s orbit so we can better predict more precisely not only when it might intercept with Earth, but what the probability of that intersection is,” Dr. Glaze said. “So the mission's been critically important for refining Bennu’s orbit so we can help protect ourselves in the future.”Watch a live stream of the event in the player below. 1222

Months after COVID-19 forced an unprecedented global shutdown that set the stage for historic job losses, things are starting to go back to normal.Unemployment appears to be improving – at least at surface level. The monthly unemployment rate declined in May and the economy added an estimated 2.5 million jobs that month.But there’s a disparity these reports don’t highlight – what unemployment looks like right now for people of color.In May, unemployment was highest among Latinx workers, at 17.6%. In the same month, Black unemployment reached 16.8%, its highest level in a decade. Asian unemployment also rose in May, to 15%.You start to see disparities when you bring in white unemployment. In May, it dropped 2.5% to 12.4%. That’s the biggest monthly drop – and lowest monthly rate – of any group.Experts say career distribution can help explain some of the disparities. People of color fill a disproportionate number of jobs in retail and hospitality. Those jobs were some of the first to be cut as the new coronavirus spread.But people of color also fill a big portion of jobs like grocery clerks and cooks. Those jobs, which are considered “essential” right now, traditionally don’t pay much and have been considered most expendable in past economic downturns.With Black workers earning the lowest median income of any group in the United States, experts worry any cuts to the currently “essential” workforce would have a disproportionate impact.Beyond the pandemic, numbers show Black unemployment is consistently higher than white unemployment. (KGTV) -- A National City Police Officer has been placed on administrative leave for allegedly using racist and insensitive language during text conversations that surfaced online.The comments were reportedly made during a private text message conversation between the officer and a member of his family. We are extremely disappointed that we have to conduct an investigation into one of our officer’s alleged misconduct.
