SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A family wants the Governor of California to keep the man who murdered three San Diego State professors behind bars. Frederick Davidson was sent to prison in 1997 for three consecutive life sentences without parole after he gunned down his three engineering professors Chen Liang, Preston Lowry, and Constantinos Lyrintzis.The San Diego County District Attorney’s Office recently notified the victims’ families that Davidson applied for executive clemency.“Just asking for clemency?  Out of what?  On what grounds?” asked a distraught Esther Alonso, Lyrintzis’ sister-in-law.  Lyrintzis was married to her sister, Deana Alonso, and the couple had a young daughter.A District Attorney’s Office spokesman said the DA’s office already filed a letter opposing Davidson’s request.Alonso told 10News she could not believe Davidson would request clemency.  Alonso said the family agreed to not seek the death penalty in 1997 if Davidson agreed to plead guilty and go to prison for life without parole.“How can they tell them 20 years later that the deaths of their husbands and their fathers…that this guy has more rights than they do?” asked Alonso, a professor at Southwestern College. “I don’t understand a system where that is even possible.”Alonso created a Change.org petition directed at Governor Jerry Brown asking him to deny Davidson’s request.The DA’s spokesman said their office opposed more than 50 clemency requests last year and none of those requests were granted.  The spokesman added there is no deadline for Governor Brown to respond or send it to a hearing. 1627

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The ancient Greek philosopher Heraclitus is said to have coined the phrase, “The only constant in life is change.” Like it or not, change happens to all of us. We either learn to embrace it or fall victim to it. A San Diego pastor was on the verge of becoming one of those victims and almost lost his church. Instead, he found a unique way to embrace the oncoming change and gave his ministry new life. “When I got here, we probably had 150 members with an average attendance of 175, and every year it was smaller and smaller,” says Pastor Bill Jenkins. Jenkins arrived at United Methodist Church in the heart of San Diego in 1999. The church was already weak and failing. Like many inner-city pastors, Jenkins was facing the inevitable, a dwindling congregation slowly dying off and the prospect of the church closing its doors. But in 2005, Pastor Jenkins had a life-changing idea.“I challenged the church to become a ministry center,” adds Jenkins. “And they said, ‘What is a ministry center,’ and I said, ‘I don’t know.’”What Jenkins and his small congregation would come to learn was rather than attending a one-day a week church on Sunday, the building would serve all those in need seven days a week. It now welcomes refugees, immigrants, and asylum seekers. It serves as a food pantry for the hungry, a clothing donation center, and twice a week it’s a free clinic with medical students from U.C.S.D and Cal State San Marcos. No insurance, no problem, no questions asked. “So, when people now ask me, ‘What is a Ministry Center?’ It’s easy for me to say we are the 7-day-a-week church,” says Jenkins. Pastor Jenkins gave his last sermon in the church in 2011, but the chapel is still home to 12 different congregations sharing the word of God. “Today, we have somewhere between 1200 and 2000 people who come through our doors,” says Jenkins proudly. “So, we flipped the church. We flipped it from being a dead and dying church to becoming an integral part of the community.” The church wasn’t alone in its transformation; Pastor Jenkins and his family went through one as well. To date, over 7500 asylum seekers have come through the doors of the Christ Ministry Center. Two of them are 5-year-old Harry and his mother. “You would have a hard time convincing me that he is not an angel in disguise,” Jenkins says with Harry on his lap. Pastor Jenkins and his wife were so taken with this little boy they decided to adopt him. Now along with Harry’s mother, they co-parent. Pastor Jenkins may have retired from preaching, and his church may have closed its doors, but embracing change and having a love for all people will always be his legacy in the eyes of his God. “He said, ‘If you welcome the strangers, I will welcome you into heaven,’” says Jenkins. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Willie O'Ree, who played seven seasons with the original San Diego Gulls after becoming the first African-American man to play in the NHL, will be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame Monday in Toronto.O'Ree was elected to the hall in June in the Builder Category, along with NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman, for his work growing the game.``This honor would not be possible if I had not rejoined the league in 1998,'' O'Ree said.  ``I was given a second wind to give back to the game and I am honored to be recognized.''Bettman said he was ``particularly honored to be part of a class that includes Willie O'Ree.''O'Ree became the NHL's diversity ambassador in 1998. He has built and supported more than 30 nonprofit youth hockey programs throughout North America, giving more than 120,000 boys and girls from disadvantaged and marginalized populations the opportunity to play hockey.Through his actions and his words, O'Ree has created greater opportunity and hope for underrepresented, disadvantaged and marginalized boys and girls. He has inspired generations of people to believe that anything is possible, and has worked tirelessly to reinforce that message in communities across North America.``Willie has just as much of an impact on hockey as a guy like Wayne Gretzky. I wouldn't be playing in the league if it wasn't for Willie O'Ree,'' said Nashville Predators defeseman P.K. You could be the first. You have the skills, you have the ability.``When I went to Kitchener (in 1955-56), (coach) Jack Stewart told me the same thing. When I turned pro with the Quebec Aces (in 1956-57), (general manager) Punch Imlach told me the same thing. It started to register with me. That gave me the extra confidence I needed.''O'Ree made his NHL debut on Jan. 18, 1958, in the Boston Bruins' 3-0 victory at Montreal. O'Ree played one more game with Boston that season, then returned to Quebec Hockey League's Quebec Aces.O'Ree played 43 games with the Bruins in the 1960-61 season, scoring four goals and having 10 assists in 43 games. O'Ree was traded to the Montreal Canadiens in June 1961, but never played for them.There would not be another black player in the NHL until 1974 when rookie left wing Mike Marson debuted with the expansion Washington Capitals.O'Ree was traded on Nov. 10, 1961 to the Los Angeles Blades of the Western Hockey League, who he played with until they disbanded in 1967 when the NHL expanded to Los Angeles.He joined the WHL's Gulls for the 1967-68 season, their second. He remained with the Gulls for their final seven seasons, scoring a career high-equaling 38 goals in the 1968-69 season.O'Ree returned to professional hockey after a three-season absence in 1978 at the age of 43 with the Pacific Hockey League's San Diego Hawks, scoring 21 goals and assisting on 25 others in 53 games.He played 19 years of professional hockey, despite losing the sight in his right eye as a result of being hit in the eye by a deflected puck while playing junior hockey in 1956.O'Ree kept his vision problem secret, because if it had been known, it would have ended his playing career.Alf Pike, who coached O'Ree with the Blades, figured O'Ree was keeping a vision problem secret and switched him to his right wing, and O'Ree blossomed into a top WHL scorer.Following his playing career, O'Ree was security director at the Coronado Hotel.O'Ree's many honors include the Order of Canada, his native country's highest civilian honor, and the Lester Patrick Award for outstanding service to hockey in the United States. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A bankruptcy judge told a San Diego-based financial investment advisor that he was spending against her orders. She told Christopher Dougherty he doesn’t have the right to prefer his kid’s expenses over his creditors.Today the judge ruled Dougherty will be in Chapter seven bankruptcy, meaning that he and his wife are no longer in charge of their own assets.A trustee will investigate and liquidate those assets.Dougherty is being accused of running a Ponzi scheme targeting mostly elderly victims who planning for retirement and taking more than million, according to bankruptcy court records.In bankruptcy court documents, the United States Trustee wrote Dougherty’s “deception is the basis of a Ponzi scheme.”“[Their] practice of using new investment money to pay existing investors dividends and the principal gave the false impression that the payments received by investors came from earnings and profits or from a return of their principal,” the documents said.The San Diego County Sheriff's Department tells 10News there is a criminal investigation into Christopher Dougherty with at least 30 potential victims.The Securities and Exchange Commission also has an open investigation into Dougherty. 1237

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A former La Jolla restaurant owner convicted of raping multiple women is speaking out from jail. Daniel Dorado spoke exclusively with ABC10 News in a series of recorded interviews.Dorado was sentenced on Tuesday to 40 years in prison in a hearing where several victims shared their emotional stories with the courtroom.Dorado maintains his innocence and accuses law enforcement officials of conspiring against him, although he lacks evidence to back his claims. Per ABC10 News' continued efforts to practice balanced reporting and given the impact his arrest and prosecution had on the community, ABC10 News has chosen to share his story."This is the first time and only time I've spoken to anybody to this degree," 62-year-old Dorado told ABC10 News. The former owner of Voce del Mare restaurant has been incarcerated at George Bailey Detention Facility since being convicted last December on 20 counts related to rape and sexual assault of four unconscious and intoxicated victims."You're vilified 24-7," he told ABC10 News and added, "Nobody made these women do anything. It was all very consented."ABC10 News broke the story two years ago when Dorado was charged with drugging and raping women, sometimes at his restaurant. ABC10 News previously spoke to one woman who said that it happened to her."I went in there for a job interview. I would have never imagined going through a sexual assault and not knowing how it happened," she told ABC10 News during the 2018 interview. She said that she answered an ad on Craigslist for a hostess position, and when she went in for an interview, she said Dorado offered her wine, which she accepted. What happened next is unclear."What I do recall is waking up around four in the morning and I did not have any clothes on. He had nothing on. [There were] bruises around my chest. I was in great pain," she explained.At trial, some of his former employees talked about working for him. "He was very erratic. His behavior...he would say one thing and be yelling at you [and] then nice the next second," one person testified."I will not be satisfied until I'm exonerated," Dorado stated in one of his recent interviews from jail. He denies any wrongdoing and says that every sexual encounter was consensual.Dorado said he believes that the DA's Office unfairly bolstered a conviction against him although his argument is based on speculation. ABC10 has asked, "What evidence do you have to support that?" Dorado replied in part, "I don't have any evidence. That belongs to the detectives."Dorado pointed to one encounter with a woman who he said came to his restaurant after they'd met on a dating app. "In that window of time between 12 p.m. and 3 p.m., she had two martinis, each with an ounce and a half of vodka and three ounces of cranberry juice. I gave her the opportunity to drive home because her van was right in front and I [asked], 'Or, would you like to continue our day and join me for lunch?' She joined me for lunch and we never drank again," he explained.That lunch date and the eventual sexual encounter was at the Bahia Resort Hotel where he claims that resort surveillance video would have revealed that she was conscious and coherent. Still, he said the video was not shown in court. He accused detectives and DA's Office of purposefully withholding it.Dorado also said that he believes he was recorded in a pretext call staged by detectives in which the victim called to solicit incriminating statements. Dorado believes that she was disgruntled after their date."You have to keep something in mind. I did not call this woman back for several weeks after we met, okay, and so my attorney told me flat out [that] this is a case of buyer's remorse," he told ABC10 News.ABC10 News asked, "Why would multiple women who don't know each other do this to you?" He replied in part, "Several reasons. Attention. Financial. Popular." He insisted, though, that he's not intending to blame or shame victims.Dorado told ABC10 News that another victim was his friend and that authorities pressured her to testify against him. "The District Attorney and the judge allowed me to still interact with her [and] allowed me to [live] with her. She let me live in her townhouse during my bail," he stated and questioned, "What judge allows a rapist to live with their victim?"At this week's sentencing hearing, she was the only victim who spoke out in his defense. She accused detectives of manipulating her to testify against her will and appear confused about a possible assault.In court, she stated, "Your Honor, Mr. Dorado never raped me. I never went to the police. I never filed a police report. In fact, I declined a restraining order against Mr. Dorado and I told detectives that I did not want to press charges."On the phone Tuesday night, she declined to offer any more public comment.ABC10 News reached out to the attorney who represented the victim who said that she answered the ad on Craigslist to get her position on his accusations. The victim has not called to provide comment.The DA's Office sent the following statement to ABC10 News:"The District Attorney's Office presented evidence in open court, a jury found we proved our case beyond a reasonable doubt and convicted the defendant of these violent crimes. The victims in this case deserve justice and will have the opportunity to be heard at sentencing."A follow-up statement from the DA's Office after the sentencing hearing read,"[Tuesday's] comments in open court by the judge, the victims, and our prosecutor along with the evidence presented at trial, all support the just result and appropriate sentence in this case."The San Diego Police Department sent ABC10 News the following statement:"The San Diego Police Department is committed to maintaining public safety by providing the highest quality police services. The department's Sex Crimes Unit thoroughly investigated all incidents brought to our attention, and we appreciate the San Diego County District Attorney's efforts to help seek justice for all who have been victimized by Mr. Dorado.""I'm hurt. I'm angry. My life has been ruined," Dorado told ABC10 News and added, "I'm not looking for sympathy. I'm looking for the truth."One of the victims filed a civil suit against Dorado after he was arrested.
