LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Three men and three women were arrested for allegedly toppling and vandalizing a statue of President George Washington in Grand Park, authorities said Saturday.The vandalism occurred about 6:40 p.m. Thursday in the downtown park at 200 N. Grand Ave. in the Civic Center, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.Officers monitoring a nearby protest saw people pulling on red bands tied to the statue's neck, police said.The statue broke off of its base and fell to the ground, where it was spray-painted as the six suspects and others cheered and celebrated, police said.The suspects then hid nearby to change their clothes and conceal items in their backpacks to avoid arrest, police said. But police were waiting when they left the protest at Spring and Temple streets and the six suspects were arrested.Officers recovered items during the arrest including a gas mask, laser pointer, helmet, goggles, arm protectors and change of clothing, police said.The suspects were identified as Elizabeth Brookey, 19, of Burbank; Christopher Woodard, 33, of Los Angeles; Anna Asher, 28, of North Hollywood; Emma Juncosa, 23, of Los Angeles; Andrew Johnson, 22, of Glendale and Barham Lashley, 30, of North Hollywood.The case will be presented to the District Attorney's office for consideration of felony filings, police said. 1351

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Several Republican candidates gained ground in updated vote counts in closely fought House districts in Southern California. In the 50th District anchored in San Diego County, Republican former Rep. Darrell Issa padded his lead to more than 16,000 votes. The district was previously held by Republican Duncan Hunter, who resigned after pleading guilty to conspiracy to misuse campaign funds for personal use.As of Friday afternoon, Issa led Democratic challenger Ammar Campa-Najjar 146,398 to 130,226 votes, with 66% of precincts reporting.Republicans are trying to recapture some of the seven districts the party lost to Democrats in 2018.Republican Rep. Mike Garcia in the 25th District north of Los Angeles was trailing Democrat Christy Smith but Thursday's vote count update gave him a slight edge. LOS ANGELES (AP) — Authorities identified five additional victims Tuesday as divers searched for the last missing passenger who died in a fatal boat fire off the coast of California.As the families mourned, officials pursued a criminal investigation into the blaze that killed 34 people on Labor Day.Santa Barbara County Sheriff Bill Brown said the victims, 21 women and 13 men from 16 to 62 years old, appear to have died from smoke inhalation before they were burned. Five of six crew members, including the captain, survived after multiple efforts to rescue the dozens trapped below deck.Authorities said efforts to find the final victim and salvage the Conception are expected to continue Wednesday.The five additional victims, all from California, are Adrian Dahood-Fritz, 40, of Sacramento; Lisa Fiedler, 52, of Mill Valley; Kristina "Kristy" Finstad, 41, of Tamrick Pines; Fernisa Sison, 57, of Stockton, and Kristian Takvam, 34, of San Francisco.Finstad, a marine biologist who led the scuba tour, had led hundreds of dives in the Channel Islands. She had just returned from spending several years sailing across the Pacific with her husband.Fiedler, a Michigan native, was a hairdresser and photographer who thought of herself as "part fish" because of her ocean addiction.The other three victims identified Tuesday were on the boat with coworkers and loved ones.Sison's husband, Michael Quitasol, and her three stepdaughters also perished in the fire. Sison and Quitasol worked at St. Joseph's Medical Center in Stockton.Dahood-Fritz and her husband, professional photographer Andrew Fritz, also both died in the blaze.
