EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) - Grossmont College is looking to expand a program that offers free textbooks to students. The Open Educational Resources program, or OER, allows students to download digital versions of textbooks for free. College officials say it can save students more than ,000 each semester. In the 2018-19 school year, Grossmont students have already saved nearly .3 million."We realized students were making decisions like, 'Do I want to buy food today or do I want to purchase my textbook?'" says Professor Dave Dillon, who has championed the program at Grossmont.A study in 2013 showed that students spend around ,500 each year on textbooks. That's more than a semester of tuition at Grossmont, which is ,334.Additional studies showed that anywhere from 50-60% of students have decided not to buy a textbook for a class because it's too expensive.Dillon and five other professors started offering courses with the OER textbooks in 2016. Convincing teachers to switch from their traditional books to the OER versions has been a challenge, but Dillon says more come around every year.By 2018, 46 teachers had begun using the books. In the spring of 2019, about 100 teachers are using OER."Those are openly licensed materials that are free for students to use," explains Dillon. He adds that the texts offer the same quality as the books that cost students hundreds of dollars."For me, it was just too much money to pay," says Grossmont 2nd year student Edwin Hernandez. "A lot of times, I'd skip buying the book and just really pay attention as much as I can in class. It barely got me by, but it's still a bigger struggle."Fellow student Carlos Espinoza says he used the money he saved on textbooks to buy his first car. That helped him avoid spending more than two hours each day on the bus or trolley to get to and from campus."It saves me so much time," he says. While the books are digital, students have the option to purchase a printed version of the books for about each. Dillon says he's seen test scores and class completion rates skyrocket since he switched to the free textbooks.Grossmont offers two full Associate's Degree programs using just OER books, Geography and Sociology. But they don't work for every area of study. Many STEM courses have supplemental books that students still have to buy. So do English and Literature classes, where students need to purchase novels which aren't in the public domain.Meanwhile, publishers have begun to fight back. According to Dillon, some are trying to downplay the quality of the OER books. Others have tried to write their own versions. And some companies are switching to a subscription-based model, similar to Netflix, where students pay a yearly or monthly fee to have access to all of the publisher's library.Dillon says he's in favor of anything that can help more students afford college."It solves an equity issue," he says. 2923

DULZURA, Calif. (CNS) -- Firefighters were working Tuesday to extinguish a brush fire that has charred at least 100 acres of vegetation near the U.S.-Mexico border. The so-called Border 11 Fire was reported around 8:30 p.m. Monday in a mountainous area west of Marron Valley and south of Dulzura, Cal Fire Capt. Issac Sanchez said, adding that no homes or structures were immediately threatened. The fire was located in an area that was difficult to access, but heavy cloud cover and high humidity Tuesday morning was helping to keep the flames at bay, Sanchez said.Crews requested an air attack to help crews on the ground, but aircraft were unable to fly Tuesday morning because of the heavy cloud cover, he said. A better estimate about the size of the fire will be available once air crews are able to survey the area. The cause of the fire was under investigation. As of 3:30 p.m., the fire was 60 percent contained. 926

Dozens fetuses and infant remains were discovered during Detroit police raids on two metro Detroit cemeteries on Wednesday as part of the state's investigation into Perry Funeral Home.According to police, the raids were prompted by a tip that there were between 100 and 125 fetuses from Perry Funeral Home being stored at the cemetery.Officers say they discovered 27 sets of infant and fetal remains that had improper or missing paperwork from Knollwood Cemetery in Canton, Michigan and 17 from Gethsemane Cemetery in Detroit. In October, officers found 36 fetuses in cardboard boxes and 27 more in freezers from inside Perry Funeral Home in Detroit. The Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs revoked the funeral home's license and shut down the facility. Earlier that month, police also discovered 11 infant bodies in the ceiling of Cantrell Funeral Home, also in Detroit. 928

During the second national lockdown in the United Kingdom, the country’s coronavirus cases dropped by about 30 percent, according to a new study. The report, from the Real-time Assessment of Community Transmission (REACT) program in the UK, looked at swab tests on more than 105,000 people between November 13 and 24.Researchers found about .96 percent of the sample tested positive for coronavirus. This compares to about 1.32 percent positive swab tests of a similar sample in a November 2 report.“Three weeks into the second national lockdown in England there has been a ~30% proportionate reduction in prevalence overall,” the REACT report concluded. However, “average absolute prevalence remains high at ~1%. Continued monitoring of the epidemic in the community remains essential until prevalence is reliably suppressed to much lower levels, for example, through widespread vaccination.”An estimated one in 100 people have coronavirus in the UK, according to the study. The UK’s lockdown started on November 5, and data has indicated there was a spike in cases right after, according to the BBC, as symptoms started to show before the effects of the lockdown. The four-week lockdown is set to be lifted Wednesday in the UK, and regions will fall into one of a few tiers based on the rate of infections in that area. The study’s authors said the latest round of test results show a higher prevalence of positive coronavirus tests in school-aged children, however they note schools have stayed open. The UK’s second lockdown kept schools open while the majority of other businesses closed and residents were asked to stay home and not socialize. The country has been paying 80 percent of employee wages during lockdown. They also found a higher prevalence of positive tests from healthcare workers compared to the October data.Researchers estimate the so-called coronavirus reproduction rate, or number of people who will contract the virus from one infected person, has dropped to about .88. Roughly, this means less than one person contracts the coronavirus from each infected person. 2095
