A new face is serving up coffee as a Starbucks barista in the Hyatt Place Boca Raton in Florida. It's the latest promotion for Angie Diaz in her 8 months in hospitality. Diaz moved from Colombia, so she had been learning a new language while also finding a job. She's deaf, which made the transition that much more complicated, learning the signed and written words of her new community. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports only about 19% of people with disabilities are employed in the United States, far less than the general population. "In the past, I really had a lot of struggles and I really had to open myself up to opportunities," Diaz signed.Diaz went through the Disability Services Hospitality Training Program with CareerSource in Palm Beach County. She learned hospitality skills while being given fair access to an interpreter in class. When she was first hired at the hotel, she was provided an interpreter for her training there. "My team members, when they found out I was deaf, they didn't really know how to handle it. They thought maybe it would be really hard to communicate," she signed. General Manager Sharon Ballard said Diaz quickly helped the coworkers adjust. "She's no different from anyone else, it's just the few alterations we have to communicate with her," Ballard said.Ballard said Diaz gave such excellent customer service, she was promoted to the position of a Starbucks Barista. "So she's working a bit one-on-one with the guests, and then hopefully we'll be able to get her at the front desk as well. To just move her up in her career," Ballard said.Hyatt Place Boca Raton has provided a machine that allows Diaz and other employees to basically "text" back and forth quickly on two computers facing each other. Diaz, however, suggests there are many ways to communicate, even if a person hasn't learned sign language yet, including using gestures and facial expressions."I have a really go-getter personality, and I showed them that we can find ways to communicate," she explained.Diaz is a model of success. Four other associates who are deaf have been hired in Hyatt hotels in the area, all from the CareerSource program. "All of this collectively has helped me become who I am. And I feel like I have really established myself as a deaf community member here. And I continue to learn and I feel so proud about that," Diaz explained. The 2394

A surprising discovery in a local park has St. Pete police giving three young kids ages 8, 7, and 5, a much-deserved shout out.On Sunday, Abigail Ellis, 7, her brother Harry, 5, and a neighborhood friend were cleaning up trash from Forrest Bluff Park when they came across a revolver in the creek bed.“I said there is a gun come see it,” Abigail said. Instead of picking up the gun Abigail said she knew better.“Mom and dad taught me about guns, and sometimes I watch movies, and there would be guns and killing,” Abigail said. Abigail ran to her grandma’s house, who then called her dad, who called the police.“Very proud,” Harry Ellis said of his two kids. “Just glad they knew not to touch it. I think they’ll get a little ice cream tonight."When St. Pete police arrived, it turned out to be a BB gun.Abigail said she hopes other kids follow their lead.“I feel good. I just feel proud,” Abigail said. 916

Amazon Prime day, in just four years, has grown to a two-day extravaganza that now almost rivals Black Friday. However, it's a day where the very best deals are on Amazon-branded products, or products tied in with Amazon (such as the Ring doorbell and video camera system). For instance, you will find a few great TV deals, but nothing to the extent you find in November. In addition, deals change every hour, making it very difficult to pre-plan your shopping. You need to keep checking prices, or set price alerts on the items you want most.So with the help of 573

A shooting at a bowling alley late Friday left three men dead and four people wounded in Southern California, and police are trying to find whoever fired the shots, authorities said. The gunshots at the Gable House Bowl in Torrance went off just before midnight. A fight -- first involving young ladies, then men -- happened shortly beforehand, sending people running, a witness said."Then ... maybe a minute and a half later, all of the sudden all we heard was, pop, pop, pop," the witness, Dana Scott, told RMG News. "Bowlers were diving under the benches. The people that were still bowling on the lanes were on the floors, underneath the seats.""People were looking for their parents, because this is a family league. You've got mothers, fathers, sons, daughters ... everybody's friends in that league," she said.No arrests were immediately reported after the shooting. City police were "working to identify the suspect(s) involved," they said in a news release.By late Saturday morning, relatives of those who were shot were clustered outside the bowling alley, standing behind yellow police tape. Some of them embraced one another; others looked toward the building's rear, where a coroner's van pulled out.Keithnisha More, one of those standing outside Saturday, said her brother-in-law was one of those who died and that he leaves behind a son."How do you explain to a 5-year-old boy that his father is dead?" More said. "How does my sister-in-law tell this little boy that daddy is gone? Just gone."The names of the dead and wounded weren't immediately released.Witness: 'People started to run'A man who says he was in a karaoke area of the building when the shooting happened described a scene of panic."People started to run inside the karaoke (area), shouting, 'Gunshot, gunshot, gunshot,'" the man, identified on Facebook as D Ryon Thomas, says in a video posted to the social network.Staff ushered people into an area in the back of the building, he said.Police ask public for videoDetectives are going to examine surveillance video recorded inside the building, Torrance police Sgt. Ron Harris said."We're also asking anyone in the public who might have seen anything, or (recorded) any cell phone video or other video, to come forward and help in this investigation," Harris said.Torrance police officers saw multiple people with gunshot wounds when they arrived, and they started lifesaving measures, including CPR and using a defibrillator, police said in a news release.Video from RMG News showed numerous firefighters or other first responders tending to people outside. The Gable House Bowl is open until 3 a.m. on Saturdays. The complex also offers laser tag and a bar, its website says.Torrance is about 20 miles from Los Angeles. 2763

American Airlines now won't use its fleet of Boeing 737 Max planes any time this summer. The world's largest airline, which has 24 of the 737 Max jets in its fleet, said it is canceling about 115 flights a day through September 3 as a result of the grounding. It previously had canceled flights through August 19. The plane was grounded in mid-March after two fatal crashes, putting focus on a particular safety feature on the plane.American's canceled flights are the most extensive among US airlines. Southwest, which has 34 of the 737 Max jets in its fleet, has canceled flights only through August 5 at this time. United Airlines' cancellations also run into August. Not all of the American flights scheduled to be flown by the 737 Max will be canceled outright. Some will be flown with other aircraft. American is also canceling some flights scheduled to be flown by different aircraft, such as the original 737, to shift those resources to other flights.American said it is adjusting its schedules to affect the fewest number of passengers possible, and passengers whose flights are canceled will be able to rebook at no cost or get a full refund if they don't wish to take their trip. The 115 flights and 24 planes represent about 2% of American's overall operations. The airline operates about 6,800 flights a day during the busy summer travel season, including those flown for it by regional feeder airlines. Its mainline operations include a total of more than 900 aircraft.Late summer is one of the busiest times of the year for air travel, so the lost flights will hurt the airline — although Boeing is expecting to find ways to compensate airlines hurt by the Max grounding. It is seeking to win approval for a software fix that is designed to address the automatic safety feature that is the focus of the investigation into the two fatal crashes."American Airlines remains confident that impending software updates to the Boeing 737 MAX, along with the new training elements Boeing is developing ... will lead to recertification of the aircraft soon," American said in its statement. "We are pleased with the progress to date." 2150
