OTAY MESA, Calif., (KGTV) — Thursday's Caliente Fire turned into a massive blaze at a pallet yard in Otay Mesa, a fire that has burned nearly 500 acres.The business owners returned to the yard Friday to find devastation, as the blaze remained 75% contained.This is not a dream. The life that Francisco and Carolina Ramirez built is now gone. "You're hoping that it will you will wake up in the morning and go back as usual. It was an effort to help Mother Nature. But on Thursday, it was Mother Nature that destroyed their business, Atlas Wood Pallets. "It's like we've been into a war. And then after that, we only see ashes," Ramirez said. Ramirez says his yard was a small city made of 60,000 pallets. But 99.9% of his inventory is now ash. The 8-foot loading dock is now a swimming pool of dirt. And what seemed to be a lifetime supply of nail gun nails are now unusable. INTERACTIVE MAP: Where the Caliente Fire burnedRamirez admits, he did not think it would get this bad. "Far away, we saw that the little fire started, and then a fire truck was nearby, so at that point I thought everything was under control," Ramirez said. But the topography of the canyon and the sudden gusts caused the flames to zig-zag straight to their yard. "The canyon has a different amount of fuel, so you get a change in the fuel. These are the first steps to rebuilding. It's something the Ramirez family is confident they can do again. "We built up so many friends. We build relationships with the community business. (KGTV) - Eight border wall prototypes erected along the U.S.-Mexico border crossing in South San Diego County will soon be dismantled, a Border Patrol source confirmed to 10News Friday. The area is being cleared to make way for the secondary border fence, the official said.The Department of Homeland Security hired companies to build the prototypes, which were finished in October 2017. The designs were constructed to the Border Patrol’s requirements and stood 30 feet high, most made of thick concrete. “We’ll look at things like aesthetics, how penetrable they area, how resistant they are to tampering, and then scaling or anti-climb features,” CBP Deputy Commissioner Ronald Vitiello said in 2017. The CBP evaluated the prototypes to determine if anyone could get through by climbing or digging. Yates & Sons Construction Company of Mississippi, Fisher Sand & Gravel Co. of Arizona, and Texas Sterling Construction Co. of Texas. Much of the input for the designs came from Border Patrol agents. PINE VALLEY, Calif. (KGTV) -- A man suspected of smuggling several people into the U.S. from Mexico led Border Patrol agents on a chase before injecting himself with heroin, the agency says. According to the agency, the incident happened around 10:45 a.m. Tuesday at the Pine Valley immigration checkpoint. After approaching the checkpoint in a 2001 Mercedes sedan with five passengers, the man was referred to a secondary inspection area before speeding away. RELATED: Second person dies after smuggling boat capsizes off Imperial Beach coastAgents chased the man down, deploying a “vehicle immobilization device” to deflate several tires, but the man kept going, agents say. After sliding off the road along I-8 near the Pine Valley Road exit, all five of the passengers ran out of the vehicle and into nearby brush. The driver, however, stayed in the sedan and began injecting himself with a black substance later identified as heroin. He was arrested on smuggling charges and is currently undergoing a medically monitored detox. The group included two men, two women, and a 16-year-old boy. They were uninjured in the crash and taken to a Border Patrol station to be processed for removal. “This is another example of the dangerous acts human smugglers perform for financial gain and how they show no regard for human life,” said Chief Patrol Agent Aaron Heitke. “Fortunately, this pursuit came to a safe conclusion and ended with the driver in custody.” 1643
