SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A man was shot and killed in the Midway District Sunday morning, leading to a standoff in North Park, and a suspect is still on the loose, according to police.San Diego Police responded after receiving reports of a shooting behind a 24 Hour Fitness near Kemper Street and Midway Drive around 11 a.m.After arriving, police found a 27-year-old white man dead at the scene. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A man who spent almost half his life behind bars for a murder did not commit walked out of Donovan Prison in South San Diego County Friday a free man. Spaghetti with meatballs. This is the meal Jack Sagin has been dreaming of for years. The 73-year-old spent the last 33 years in several different state prisons for a crime he did not commit. "I'm sitting there getting up every morning, wondering what the hell am I doing here?" Sagin said. "I ain't done nothing."In July 1986, Sagin was charged with the stabbing murder of a Monterey woman, Paula Durocher. The then-39-year-old used drugs, had a record, and was a perfect scapegoat. His imprisonment was all dependent on two jailhouse informants. "An easy one to convict," Sagin said. But he was stubborn too. Once in prison, Sagin continued to write letters to his Attorney General, congressmen, and anyone else who would listen to his cry of innocence. Then, he heard of a scientific breakthrough that could help him. "When it became DNA, it blew the top of my head off," Sagin said. Sagin was one of the first cases the Northern California Innocence Project took on in 2002. Investigators with the nonprofit reopened the case and found a clue. "We have DNA from a probable perpetrator right there, underneath her fingernails," Northern California Innocence Project attorney Kelley Fleming said. That DNA, they found, did not belong to Sagin. For the next 17 years, the Innocence Project fought to free him. "We had a deal," Fleming said. "That deal was that we weren't going to give up, but he had to keep himself alive. And that's not an easy thing to do in prison. But he did it!""Believe me… Nobody was going to stop me from surviving," Sagin said. In August, the Sixth District Court of Appeals overturned his conviction. On Friday at 9 a.m., Sagin was released from Donovan Prison, and walked straight into the arms of his sister, Barbara Kosar. She has invited Sagin to live with her and her family in Arizona. Just four days before his 74th birthday, a man who was destined to spend life in prison without parole became a free man. He hopes to pay it forward. "I want to work with some youngsters and maybe help somebody," Sagin said. Somebody who may need some inspiration to never give up. The Northern California Innocence Project believes the real killer is still out there. They say they are hopeful Monterey County law enforcement will continue their investigation into the cold case. 2479

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A new report released by the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection states wildfire acreage burned in 2019 is down 96% compared to 2018.Stating from January to August in 2018, 621,784 acres burned. In 2019, only 24,579 acres scorched during the same time period.On top of this, the U.S. Drought Monitor released a report Thursday showing most of California is out of the drought. San Diego is the only county fully highlighted in yellow, indicating it is 'Abnormally Dry'.A very stark contrast to 2018, where most of the map is covered in dark shades of drought. In August of 2018 San Diego was labeled in 'Severe Drought'.While the winter rain cured California's drought, it brought a new problem to firefighters. Tall weeds, and new growth act as kindling, launching fires, according to Cal Fire Captain Thomas Shoots.So we're not out of the woods.Historically San Diego has had some of it's biggest fires in the Fall and Winter, whipped up by Santa Ana winds. "Our fuels are going to continue to dry out an we're not going to be getting rain for quite a while longer so even though we've had the marine layer sticking in and that's really helped us, in the long run those heavy rains that we need, we're probably not going to see for several months," he said. "Late October is usually when we see the Santa Ana winds. We are expecting our normal winds this year. We still have an above average fire potential for San Diego for October and November."Shoots said neighbors must stay vigilant, and create defensible space around their home."I think it's important for everyone to remember most fires are human caused," he said. 1670

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A man who groped and sexually assaulted four female students as they walked to their off-campus housing near SDSU pleaded guilty Monday.Minda Shewangizaw, 20, pleaded guilty to charges including felony and misdemeanor counts of false imprisonment and sexual battery.All four victims in the case, who ranged in age from 17 to 19, testified during the preliminary hearing.One of the victims said she and her roommate were walking home after midnight when Shewangizaw came up behind her and “grabbed her butt.RELATED: Women testify against UC Riverside student accused of groping near San Diego State”Her roommate said she noticed someone walking behind them before he began to chase them. "I said, You need to leave. He grabbed my hand and pulled me toward him. He pulled my shirt down and grabbed my breast."She said she kicked Shewangizaw and was able to break free.Another victim testified that she and another woman were on a pedestrian bridge heading back to their dorm when she heard footsteps and was smacked on her “behind” by Schewangizaw."I was livid. I said, What are you doing? Don't do that! He laughed it off."She said she kept walking when the defendant made a remark about her breasts before pulling her shirt down and putting his hands on her chest.A witness said Shewangizaw then grabbed her breast and buttocks and trapped her against a rail before laughing and walking away.The sentencing is scheduled for June 12. 1460

San Diego (KGTV) -- A local enterprise center for at-risk teens in City Heights is doing what they can to help those struggling during the pandemic. Their weekly food distribution is serving hundreds of people.The Union of Pan Asian Communities, also known as UPAC, works with at-risk teens in the City Heights community. The organization strives to lead the teens on a successful path.“We provide all the mentorship and guidance that we can for these kids to follow the right tracks but employment is such a critical feature,” says Director Dante Dauz.In 2018, the Enterprise Center was created to help the teens gain employment and entrepreneurial skills. The center consists of the “Neighborhood Cafe,” a commercial kitchen, print shop and technology center.“They are prepared to open up their own business,” says Dauz. “They’ve been instructed from top to bottom about what licenses they need, business formation, marketing plan.”When the pandemic hit, Dauz says many people in the City Heights area were in need of food.“This community was already experiencing challenges and barriers before COVID-19 hit.”UPAC distributes 6,000 pounds of food through care boxes every Friday.“In addition to the distribution boxes our cafe also pumps out roughly 1,000 hot meals for the families.”Dauz says the teens serving the families not only get a chance to better their professional skills but also give back to the City Heights community they love.“Food for the next few days isn’t going to solve all their problems but, its definitely going to help,” says Dauz. “We take a lot of pride in being able to do that.”The organization says to ensure there is enough for everyone, they encourage people to call and reserve a donation box ahead of time. 1750
