BORREGO SPRINGS, Calif. (KGTV) - California State Parks are preparing for wildflower blooms across the state. The unpredictable and rare occurrences attract thousands of people to the parks. Some of the most beautiful blooms take place in desert landscapes. These rare blooms occur when precipitation levels in the areas are high, combined with years-long drought that eliminate grasses and weeds that take up nutrients. These conditions cause wildflowers to thrive. Vibrant wildflowers can already be seen sprouting from the typically barren brown soil in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park.“This area is just a mosaic of a painter’s colors," said Danny McCamish, Senior Environmental Scientist for the Colorado Desert District and Anza-Borrego State Park.RELATED: Photos: Gorgeous spring bloom carpets Anza Borrego desert"The early October, November rains started that germination process early this year, and so as the December, January, and February rains came in, all of the area was ripe to go off like this."Cooler temperatures are also a factor in prolonging the bloom, which the region has been experiencing thanks to snow in the mountains. McCamish says during the 2017 'super bloom' word of the beauty spread fast on social media, drawing in 6,000 to 7,000 cars a day.He says the rush of visitors overwhelmed the small town of Borrego Springs but that this year they're more prepared. Restaurants are planning to offer to-go meals and rangers will set up pop-up visitor centers to spread out where visitors go.McCamish recommends people check out other parts of the 700,000-acre region, including Ocotillo Wells State Vehicular Recreation Area.And if you plan to spend the night figure out lodging ahead of time, whether that be a hotel or camping.In addition to the flowers, visitors can enjoy nature on a bike. Bike Borrego offers tours on electric bikes, as well as bicycles for more advanced riders. BRISTOL, Wis. -- For a fruit farmer who knew little about growing flowers, the pandemic was the perfect nudge to try something new. So, he plowed over his strawberry fields to plant a patch of sunshine and it’s grown beyond his wildest dreams.Scott Thompson’s family has been farming strawberries in Bristol, Wisconsin, for generations.“We've been around for a just about 100 years.”As the general manager of Thompson Strawberry Farms, he says they’ve adapted over time starting with apples and strawberries at first.“We've kind of morphed over the years where we have raspberries and pumpkins as well.”But this year, the pick-your-own farm traded the sweet fruits for something more picturesque.“This year is our first crack at pick your own sunflowers,” said Thompson.Even though Thompson knew very little about the bright yellow flower, he started out slow, until the pandemic hit and then had a thought.“This might be something that people might be really interested in. And so, I started planting. I did a small four-acre field then another four acres, then 10 acres. So, it just kind of grew, grew, grew.”He ended up planting not hundreds or thousands, but 2.2 million sunflower seeds across 22 acres of fields.“Having sunflowers is cool, but having a lot of sunflowers, that's really cool,” he said.For visitors like Sarah Akers and her 2-year-old son Xavier, it’s an eye-popping treat.“When they said how big it was, this is not what I was expecting,” said Akers. “It definitely is more impressive than what it sounds like when you just read about it.”It’s also a paradise for pollinators. Bees buzz from flower to flower. And with 15 fields, Thompson says it’s a great outing during the pandemic.“It's a perfectly natural social distancing activity,” said Thompson.The massive blooms have attracted visitors from all over the country. Debbie Berdinski, visiting from Alabama, was enthralled.“I love it. I think it's beautiful,” she said.And the decision to swap out strawberries for sunflowers has unexpectedly turned Thompson’s farm into his very own golden field of dreams.“You could really just go out and have a fun time and kind of forget about reality for a little bit,” he said. “Just enjoy being out here in this sea of yellow flowers.”And in a year like 2020, a little sunshine goes a long way. 2320

Brothers Erik and Lyle Menendez, who were convicted of the 1989 murder of their parents, are together again and housed at the same California state prison.Terry Thornton, spokeswoman for the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, said Lyle Menendez was transferred to the Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility in San Diego on February 22 and was moved Wednesday into the same housing unit as Erik Menendez.The move was made after a transfer request from Lyle Menendez. He previously had been held at Mule Creek State Prison in Northern California, Thornton said.The prison board found no reason that the brothers could not be housed together.Lyle Menendez, 50, and Erik Menendez, 47, have been imprisoned since July 1996, after a much-publicized trial. Both men are serving life sentences with no possibility of parole.In the sensational televised trial, the brothers, then teenagers, claimed they killed their parents, Jose and Mary Louise Menendez of Beverly Hills, California, after years of sexual abuse by their father.Prosecutors, however, said the two wanted to get their parents' million fortune.  1143

Beginning in the fall of 2023, all California State University students will be required to take a three-unit ethnic studies or social justice course to graduate.“Automatic yes,” said Jose Juan Rodriguez Gutierrez Hernandez Estrada, a wildlife biology major at Humboldt State University. “I’m glad that’s something that’s going to be required.”In addition to his studies, Rodriguez also makes music about social issues and also plays on the HSU men's rugby team.For the student-athlete, this change in curriculum shows a commitment to much needed change.“I feel like making ethnic studies would go a long way, not just for students of color but for our society in general,” he said.University leaders say these courses will have their own section in the general education curriculum, as social science requirements have been lowered from nine to six units.“We feel that it really is time to make this change,” said Alison Wrynn, Ph.D., CSU associate vice chancellor.Wrynn says this decision is the first major change to the CSU system’s general education requirements in 40 years.“Whether you’re an engineer or a nurse, it’s important for you to understand the communities you’re working with as you make those professional discipline-based decisions,” she said.Some college leaders, however, say this change is not nearly enough“We are absolutely opposed to it,” said Charles Toombs, Ph.D., a professor of Africana Studies at San Diego State University.Toombs is also president of the California Faculty Association, the union that represents the 29,000 faculty members in the CSU system and a group he says was not included enough in the decision making.“The BOT (Board of Trustees) did not listen to our voices,” he said. “CSU’s proposal is diluting what ethnic studies is; it’s trying to include everything in ethnic studies.”Toombs and other representatives from the CFA are pushing for Assembly Bill 1460 – which would require students to take a class focusing on one of four ethnic groups: African Americans, Latin X, Asian Americans and indigenous groups.“It will actually give students essential knowledge that they need in the 21st century,” Toombs said.As the bill sits on the California governor’s desk, Rodriguez believes these new requirements are a good start for future change.“I feel like these lessons we can take with us and teach to our children, teach to the next generations,” he said. 2415
