The US Air Force apologized Thursday for its ill-advised attempt to incorporate the viral "Yanny" or "Laurel" meme into a tweet about repelling a Taliban attack in Afghanistan. In what was clearly a major social media fail, the initial tweet -- which was posted by the Air Force's official account earlier in the day -- attempted to put a playful spin on the popular meme currently sweeping the internet by comparing it to the distinctive sound of the 30mm cannons aboard an A-10 Warthog aircraft."The Taliban Forces in Farah city #Afghanistan would much rather have heard #Yanny or #Laurel than the deafening #BRRRT they got courtesy of our #A10," the tweet said. The tweet has since been deleted and replaced with an apology that said the initial post was "made in poor taste.""We apologize for the earlier tweet regarding the A-10. It was made in poor taste and we are addressing it internally. It has since been removed," the second post said.Politicians, corporate brands and even the Department of Defense's official Twitter account have weighed in on the debate centered around a viral audio clip that says either "Yanny" or "Laurel" depending on the listeners interpretation. But the Air Force's post incorporating the pop-culture reference sparked criticism from those who said it was inappropriate to mention the meme in a tweet about the thwarted Taliban attack .When asked about the controversy on Thursday, Pentagon Spokeswoman Dana White said she wasn't aware of the tweet."What is important to understand is that this is the Afghans' fight. We are working by, with and through these partners. And they are dying to secure their own future and I think that shouldn't be forgotten in any of this," she added. The US military helped Afghan troops repel a major Taliban attack on the Afghan provincial capital Farah on Tuesday and Wednesday that punctured the security perimeter surrounding the city, US and NATO officials told CNN.The Pentagon said Thursday some US advisers assisted in the fight and coalition airstrikes also took place. US A-10 attack jets also flew overhead but did not conduct any strikes. It was unclear how close the Taliban came to capturing the city, which would have represented a major blow to the Afghan government. The insurgents claimed they briefly seized the city center, while the NATO-led coalition said it saw no direct evidence that they ever made it into the city.Afghan A-29 attack planes and Mi-17 helicopters carried out multiple airstrikes in defense of the city.US military advisers eventually arrived in the city to assist Afghan military commanders at their headquarters, helping to call in drone strikes that killed some 28 Taliban fighters, Lt. Col. Martin O'Donnell told CNN.He said US troops also arrived to advise Afghan commando units involved in the counterattack but did not participate in offensive operations. 2877

The US Forest Service hopes families will want to end 2020 with a live tree, preferably one cut from a national forest.Cutting down a Christmas tree is a tradition for many, and a healthy tradition for the forests as smaller trees get thinned out.“By cutting your own tree, you take an active part in managing your national forests,” according to the US Forest Service webpage.Tree hunters should look for an area of tightly-knit, dense trees and pick one from there. This will in turn give the surrounding trees more space to grow, Hillary Santanez, recreation event coordinator with the White River National Forest, explained to KMGH.Thinning the forests in this fashion reduces competition for resources and nutrients so the other trees can grow stronger and healthier, Santanez said. It also helps the trees handle stressful environmental situations, such as drought. In addition, thinning dense forests can help with wildfire mitigation.Families who have a fourth or fifth grader can get a free permit from the Every Kid Outdoors initiative through the US Forest Service. Otherwise, permits to cut down a tree in a national forest run to depending on the park. Permits are required. All permit sales are online for 2020, along with maps, how to select a tree, guidance for cutting it down and safety reminders. Like, dressing for the cold, possibly dark and snowy forest conditions. The different parks have different rules about where a Christmas tree can be cut down from, usually it has to be about 200 feet from roads and campgrounds."You want to make sure that you're not trespassing on private property, so going onto our website and downloading a map is essential so that you can make sure that you're staying on forest land because a lot of the forest land, especially in the Front Range area, is really adjacent to private property, and you have to make sure that you're following the law while you're up there," Pike and San Isabel National Forests and Cimarron and Comanche National Grasslands Public Affairs Officer Crystal Young told KOAA News. There are height and trunk size requirements as well to make sure tree hunters are taking the smaller trees to help thin out forests. The Week 12 game between the Baltimore Ravens and the Pittsburgh Steelers has now been moved to Wednesday, the National Football League announced on Monday. The league said the game will be played at 3:40 p.m. ET Wednesday on NBC.This is the third time this game has been moved. It was originally scheduled to be played on Thanksgiving night but was moved to Sunday due to a COVID-19 outbreak within the Ravens. It was then moved from Sunday to Tuesday, and now will be played Wednesday. Last week, reports from the NFL Network said Baltimore Ravens Quarterback Lamar Jackson tested positive for COVID-19.With the rescheduling, the league said other games will be moved around: Steelers will host the Washington Football Team on Monday at 5 p.m. ET which was originally slated for Sunday, while the Ravens will host the Dallas Cowboys on Tuesday, Dec. 8 at 8:05 p.m. ET on FOX/NFL."These decisions were made out of an abundance of caution to ensure the health and safety of players, coaches and game day personnel and in consultation with medical experts," says the NFL.Ravens Coach John Harbaugh released a statement regarding the postponement. We appreciate the efforts of the NFL and Pittsburgh Steelers throughout this process, while we all work to create an environment that keeps the health and safety of everyone involved at the forefront of each decision. Our organization has a plan in place, and we will be prepared to play the Steelers. We thank everyone for their adaptability and look forward to the challenge of facing a very good football team at Heinz Field on Tuesday night.Ravens player Pat Ricard spoke out about the COVID outbreak: The word is out, I tested positive yesterday for COVID. I’ll be using this time to rest/recover along w my teammates/staff who has been affected by this virus. I appreciate all the love and support. We will come back stronger than ever! ?????????— Pat Ricard (@PRic508) November 27, 2020 This story was first reported by Kelly Broderick at WMAR in Baltimore, Maryland. 2030

The US officially relocated its Embassy to Jerusalem on Monday, formally upending decades of American foreign policy in a move that was met with clashes and protests along the Israeli-Gaza border. At least 43 Palestinians were killed in Gaza as deadly protests took place ahead of and during the ceremony in Jerusalem — making it the deadliest day there since the 2014 Gaza war.President Donald Trump did not attend the ceremony in Jerusalem's Arnona neighborhood, but in a video message broadcast at the event he congratulated Israel, saying the opening had been "a long time coming.""Today, Jerusalem is the seam of Israel's government. It is the home of the Israeli legislature and the Israeli supreme court and Israel's prime minister and president. Israel is a sovereign nation with the right like every other sovereign nation to determine its own capital, yet for many years, we failed to acknowledge the obvious, the plain reality that Israel's capital is Jerusalem," Trump said in the pre-recorded remarks. 1021

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) screened the highest number of travelers on Sunday since the start of the pandemic as more than a million Americans traveled home following the Thanksgiving holiday. The TSA screened 1.2 million passengers on Sunday, marking its highest total since March 16 — just days after President Donald Trump delivered a primetime address announcing travel restrictions to Europe as COVID-19 began to spread in the U.S. While TSA screening numbers aren't representative of all travel throughout the U.S., the number gives officials an idea of how many people boarded an airplane in the U.S. in a given timeframe.Despite the uptick in travelers, the amount of Americans traveling following Thanksgiving was nowhere near the amount that traveled on the Sunday following Thanksgiving in 2019 — on that day, TSA screen 2.9 million Americans. The uptick in travel comes despite warnings from the CDC against traveling for Thanksgiving amid a spike in COVID-19 cases. Top ranking health officials are urging anyone who traveled to attend a Thanksgiving gathering to get tested for COVID-19 even if they do not have symptoms. On Sunday, Dr. Deborah Birx — a member of the White House coronavirus task force — said anyone who attended a Thanksgiving gathering over the weekend should "assume" they have COVID-19 and take precautions against spreading the virus in the coming weeks. The U.S. has seen more than 4 million people become infected with the virus in November alone — a number that represents 30% of all cases recorded in the country since the pandemic began.Last week, Dr. Anthony Fauci — the U.S.'s leading infectious disease expert — warned that the U.S. could see a "spike superimposed on a spike" in cases in the weeks after Thanksgiving if Americans continued to travel. 1821
