SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A Paradise Hills family is in search of a good Samaritan after a young autistic man was mugged and beaten for his brand new iPhone, just blocks from his home. The incident played out along Briarwood Road on an afternoon two weeks ago. Garrett De Leon had just gotten off work and off the bus.His pride and joy was in his right hand - a new iPhone 10 that his parents gave to him for his birthday. Deleon was texting his mom that he was blocks from home, when it happened."This guy came from behind me and snatched my phone and pushed me to the ground," said De Leon.De Leon says he fought back, the two struggling on the ground. "He pushed me again and runs to the car," said De Leon.Deleon says he chased the man - a tall, lean black man wearing a beanie - to an older black car, where the man jumped in the back seat, the window rolled down."He tells his buddy to take off immediately," said De Leon. In the meantime, the thief was hitting De Leon, who says he was delivering his own blows through the window."I had too much adrenaline and didn't feel pain. Hopped up on anger and determined to get at them and at the phone," said De Leon. After the car started up, it dragged De Leon some 100 feet before he was thrown off, bloodied with cuts and and scrapes, and a sprained hand.Soon after, a Hispanic woman in her 20s, with a baby in her back seat, raced to his side. She tended to him before calling 9-1-1."Shows there are good people. She was more worried about me than her baby," said De Leon. When help arrived and she left, De Leon never got her name. "I wish I could thank her as a mom, as a person," said Shawn De Leon, Garrett's mother. She says she prefers to focus on the actions of that stranger, and not the other one."There are bad things happen to good people, and there are good people that rally when bad things happen," said Shawn De Leon.If you know who the Good Samaritan is, send tips to Tips@10news.com. A GoFundMe campaign has been set up to help De Leon buy a new iPhone. 2022

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A man who apparently set himself on fire and died of burn injuries is unidentified, the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s office said Friday in a plea for the public’s help. An artist created a rendering of the man who told first responders his name was Randy. Medical Examiner’s Investigator Tessa Lee said Randy apparently set himself ablaze under an overpass bridge in Carmel Valley July 4. He died six days later. Randy’s burns were too severe for investigators to obtain fingerprints or identify tattoos or a birthmark. The man was Hispanic or Caucasian, in his 20s to early 40s, with short dark hair, and green or hazel eyes. He stood between 5’9” and 5’11”, and weighed about 270 pounds. Lee said Randy might have been homeless. Anyone with information is asked to call investigators at 858-694-2905. 836

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A recent study from Volusion ecommerce software shows San Diego has one of the highest percentages of people who work remotely or work from home. Technology has provided flexibility in how and where we do our jobs, but when we consider how to ‘Make it in San Diego,’ we found working remotely can also put money back in your pocket. Ashley Goggins is a prime example and is one of over 8 million people in the United States who work remotely. “I’m a customer success manager for a software company,” says Goggins. Her company is headquartered in Chicago, but Ashley does her job from her living room in San Diego. “I typically wake up around 6:00 in the morning, and my calls start coming in around 6:30,” adds Goggins. “The great part about that is I don’t have to spend time getting ready, eating breakfast right away, or sitting in the car.”Goggins is part of a growing trend. Especially in the employment sectors of management, business, and science where working remotely is a valuable option for some employees. “Many industries that are prevalent in San Diego lend themselves to remote work,” says Kevin Fowler. Kevin Fowler is a writer for Volusion and author of the study. His research shows San Diego is one of the top cities in the nation when it comes to employees working remotely full-time. And for many trying to ‘Make it in San Diego,’ working remotely has its financial benefits. “The peripheral costs of working on location add up to about ,000 per year,” says Fowler. That’s right. A survey from Career Builder found that the simple act of going to work, including wear and tear on your car, gas, fair for the bus or train, lunch, even coffee adds up to about ,300 a year. “I haven’t done the math, but it does cut some costs down,” says Goggins. “I actually just contacted my car insurance company to reduce the amount of miles, so my premium is lower.”Granted, there are some negatives associated with working remotely. For some, the opportunity for promotion only comes with working onsite or at least collaborating with upper management. And then, there is also the simple need for face-to-face contact.“Sometimes, I go days at a time without seeing another human being, so I do make an effort to get out of the house at least once a day to go to a coffee shop and meet up with friends,” says Goggins.Working remotely has become such a popular trend. Yet, another study from Ivy League professors found some employees were willing to take an 8% pay cut for the opportunity to work from home. 2545
