Top officials in the White House were aware in early 2019 of classified intelligence indicating Russia was secretly offering bounties to the Taliban for the deaths of Americans, a full year earlier than has been previously reported. That's according to U.S. officials with direct knowledge of the intelligence. The assessment was included in at least one of President Donald Trump’s written daily intelligence briefings at the time, according to the officials. Then-National Security Adviser John Bolton also told colleagues he briefed Trump on the intelligence assessment in March 2019.On Saturday, the Director of National Intelligence denied that Trump had been briefed on the intelligence."I have confirmed that neither the President nor the Vice President were ever briefed on any intelligence alleged by the New York Times in its reporting yesterday," DNI Director John Ratcliffe said. On Monday, White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany suggested that the intelligence community had not come to a conclusion on the information. "There was not a consensus among the intelligence community," McEnany said earlier on Monday. "And, in fact, there were dissenting opinions within the intelligence community, and it would not be elevated to the President until it was verified."Also on Monday, eight Republican lawmakers attended a White House briefing about explosive allegations that Russia secretly offered bounties to Taliban-linked militants for killing American troops in Afghanistan. Members of Congress in both parties are calling for additional information and consequences for Russia. Republicans who were in Monday's briefing are expressing alarm about Russia’s activities in Afghanistan and urging the administration to hold Russian President Vladimir Putin accountable. Eight Democrats are to be briefed Tuesday morning. 1847

There will be two new headquarters for Amazon, with 25,000 people in each location.Amazon has not announced which two cities the headquarters will be in, but that information is expected later this week, according to?the Wall Street Journal. The HQ2 split will happen because of a lack of technology talent. It has been more than a year since the company sought proposals from cities desiring to be home to the headquarters. Amazon's current headquarters is in Seattle and has led to problematic traffic and increased housing costs. Those concerns spurred the need to move and to split into two locations, the WSJ reports.  639

Tis’ the season to light up the night. In a downtown Denver high-rise apartment building, people are letting their Christmas spirit shine by decorating their balconies.“At least we can light it up and make people smile,” said resident Kim Dozier.Out West in Southern California, an Orange County neighborhood is celebrating the holidays by covering their houses and stringing lights across their street.“We see kids and families coming out here every night,” said homeowner Bruce Barfell.Across the country in New Jersey, the holiday spirit glows as people cover their houses with festive décor. And in San Antonio, Texas, there’s a battle to see who’s the biggest and brightest. These are some of the competitive Christmas lighting celebrations happening during this holiday season.“It’s a light beaming from all of us,” Dozier said of her building’s competition, adding it’s bringing some much-needed light to what’s been a dark 2020 for some.“It’s about showing the world we’re still alive,” she said. “Just because we have this insane time to stay at home and we’re going to have fun no matter what.”From the Mile High City to the California coast, spreading holiday cheer has been a bit more challenging during the COVID-19 crisis.“This year, unlike other years, it’s harder to kind of fill that Christmas spirit,” said Matt Eyre of Laguna Niguel. He and neighbor Barfell are looking to help people temporarily escape the pandemic through dazzling displays of lights.Though Barfell is looking to capture his neighborhood’s Christmas lighting competition for the tenth year in a row, he says whether win or lose, naughty or nice, it’s good to see little holiday magic.“We just do it for the enjoyment we get and also for what, you know, what people tell us when we’re outside,” Barfell said. “How much they appreciate this.”Spreading Christmas cheer through some friendly competition.“Competitive Christmas e lights is just another way to shine the love around everywhere,” Dozier said. “We’ve been held down for so many reasons for so long. So, Christmas, just lets you know just let it shine.” 2103

There was a disturbance in the Force at the box office this weekend.Disney and Lucasfilm's "Solo: A Star Wars Story," a prequel film about the origins of Han Solo, made an estimated 1 million domestically for its four-day weekend opening which includes the Monday holiday, according to Disney. That makes "Solo" the smallest opening for a "Star Wars" film since 2002.The number, while being the biggest Memorial Day Weekend debut in the last four years, is also solidly under industry expectations. Initial projections on Tuesday had the film bringing in 0 million to 0 million in North America. Those projections were adjusted down on Friday to 5 million to 5 million.Overall, the film made 8 million worldwide. "Rogue One," Disney's other "Star Wars" spinoff that was coming off the huge success of "The Force Awakens," made 0 million globally for its debut in December of 2016.So even though 1 million is still a solid opening that most film franchises would love to have, success is judged differently for the galaxy far, far away."Anytime the numbers come in lower than projections, there is a feeling of disappointment and the 'Star Wars" brand for better or worse is always subject to lofty box office expectations," said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at comScore. "That sometimes even puts a film that opens with around 0 million under scrutiny."So what happened? For "Solo," it could be a mixture of things from brand fatigue?(the last "Star Wars" film was just in theaters five months ago) to the film facing more competition in the summer season. The Memorial Day weekend, which has in recent years struggled to get audiences to leave their BBQs and head to the movies, could have also played a factor. So what do the returns for "Solo" mean for the franchise going forward?"The franchise will be fine," Dergarabedian said. "The long wait until 'Episode IX' is actually going to be a good thing for the franchise... a bit of breathing space is needed to build back up the huge excitement that every 'Star Wars' film deserves." 2096
