JINAN, Dec. 21 (Xinhua) -- China and the Republic of Korea (ROK)Tuesday launched a joint land and sea transport services in a bid to cut logistics costs and boost trade.Semi-trailers loaded with cargo can now be shipped between Qingdao, Rizhao, Yantai, Weihai, Longyan and Shidao in the eastern Chinese province of Shandong and Incheon, Pyungtack and Kunsan in the ROK.The service can cut transport time by 3.5 hours and reduce costs by 50 U.S. dollars per container, as trailers can be driven directly to customers without unloading and loading, according to the ROK's Transport Research Institute.The service is expected to boost the shipments of fresh vegetables, live fish and other fragile products such as glass and electronics.Gao Hongtao, deputy director of the Shandong Provincial Transportation Bureau, said that with continuous oxygen charging and temperature control, the service can increase by 10 percent the survival rate of live fish exported from Weihai to the ROK.The two countries would later allow trucks to be shipped, according to an agreement they signed in September. CHANGSHA, Dec. 19 (Xinhua) -- The death toll in a fireworks blast in central China' s Hunan Province rose from an earlier announced nine to 12 after DNA tests results were completed , local authorities said Sunday night.Another two people were believed to be missing, police said, adding that three of the 12 victims were still to be identified.The blast, which also injured nine others, occurred in Ningxiang County of Changsha, the provincial capital, at about 9:30 p.m. Friday when a truck loaded with fireworks fuses hit a power pole and sparks from fallen cables ignited the fuses.The blast destroyed the truck and nearby houses, shattering windows and cracking walls hundreds of meters away.Rescue work and clean-up at the site ended on Sunday, a local government spokesman said.The nine injured, who are being treated in hospital, are in stable conditions, according to the spokesman.However, the whereabouts of the truck driver remains unknown.Police continue investigating the accident.

BEIJING, Jan. 18 (Xinhua) -- China will continue rare earth export and regulate export quotas according to World Trade Organization rules, said the Ministry of Commerce on Tuesday.China announced its first batch of 2011 rare earth export quotas at 14,446 tonnes at the end of 2010.The full-year quotas are under discussion and will be announced timely, said Yao Jian, a spokesman with the ministry, at a news briefing here.The country exported 35,000 tonnes of rare earth from January to November in 2010, up 14.5 percent from a year earlier. Exports to Japan, the European Union and the United States accounted for 86 percent of the total exports, said Yao.He said that it is normal that rare earth prices fluctuate with demand and supply and China acted responsibly last year to ensure basic demand for the minerals was met.China has noticed that other countries, such as the U.S. and Australia, have increased exploitation of rare earth in their own countries. "This will effectively safeguard the global supply," said Yao.With around 36 percent of the world's rare earth reserves, China supplies 90 percent of global demand.
