Parents are facing tough decisions as the school year looms: Should they keep their children in school, or pull them and send them to a school that's already prepared for distance learning?K12 Inc. is the largest online education provider in the K through 12 space. They serve 30 states, with 6,000 teachers around the country and 120,000 students. Distance learning is what they do best, and these days, they're getting flooded.It's what Kevin Chavous, K12's President of Academics, says is "dramatic" increase in interest from parents. They've received thousands of applications since the spring."These are families that otherwise wouldn't consider a virtual option, but all of them say the same thing — they're so fearful about their kids' safety," Chavous said. "They're educated consumers, shopping around trying to figure out options."Most of the calls to K12 are coming from heavily-involved parents. They want to know the data; they want to know about the education, the structure, the sports, and the possibility of meetups."A lot of the data we look at shows that anywhere from 10% to 40% of the average public school parent says there's no way they'll send their kid back to the brick-and-mortar school they're going to — not because they have problems, but they're deathly afraid of the safety issue," Chavous said.Parents everywhere have questions, and they want answers. Chavous addressed the school's biggest selling point."Well, we've been doing it longer, and we do it better and we've refined what we do," he said.Nearly 500 of K12's teachers have enrolled in a Master's in Education in Online Instruction.It was a fast switch to online learning that jolted parents this past spring, and it's something that Southern California mom Christy Hartman doesn't want to do again."I can't do another semester of what we experienced last year," she said. "It was disjointed, she was a 5th grader and spent about 45 minutes a day (e-learning) — no live instruction from teachers at all."Hartman says she's decided that if her local school district continues full-time distance learning, she'll pull her child and send her to Sage Oak — a large regional charter school that offers personalized learning.Kids at Sage Oak meet in person once every 20 school days, and the rest is teacher-guided, teacher-supported instruction, led by parents at home.Sage Oak was prepared for the pandemic before it ever happened."We didn't have to make a ton of changes," said Chelsey Anema, the school's student services coordinator. "We did have to go virtual — which is unfortunate because we love and value the time we get to meet with students each month — but we are equipped with meeting virtually, so it wasn't a huge struggle for us."Anema says Sage Oak is getting between 50 and 60 new student applications a day. It's a demand they can't meet due to a new bill that caps school funding and enrollment in California.Parents have some choices to make. And K12 recommends that parents do their homework."Call all of us. Call the school district. Ask those questions, seek better answers," Chavous said. "This is a precious time for America as we go through this education reset and global reset, and we have to do it right. You only have one chance to educate your child." 3278

Parents are approaching back-to-school as best they can, whether their kids are learning at home or face-to-face in the classroom. Many are also relying on after-school programs to help keep their kids mentally and academically successful."The reality is that because most of our schools are virtual or hybrid, after school is all the time and so our programs have been on overdrive to try and meet the need of all of our working parents. And whether you’re working from home or you have to go into work, it’s really hard to do that when you have kids that are home," said Jodi Grant, the Executive Director of the Afterschool Alliance.Grant says after-school programs during the pandemic are essential. The national organization works with 27,000 programs across the country that are not only providing meals to children, but also virtual classroom spaces and childcare for working parents."I think we need to stop and put the kids first. And there’s a lot of creative ways that our kids can be learning, and they don't need to be isolated. After-school programs have jumped to do that and jumped through hoops to do that," said Grant.YMCA of the USA has slowly been reopening some programs since the spring, including a number of day camps this summer. As the fall approached, organizers realized they needed to expand after-school programs."We saw the need in the community to pivot to an all-day childcare model, where the children can now come to the Y, they’ll be separated into different pods and staff as they go through their virtual learning programs via their schools," said Ryan O'Malley with YMCA of the USA.O'Malley says there are more than 370 YMCA locations providing full-day childcare and virtual learning classrooms in 45 states across the country. Boys and Girls Clubs of America has 4,700 locations in the U.S. and right now more than 83% of them are providing some level of service."I think it's critical for both the physical safety but also the emotional safety for those young people and being able to provide those services," said Misty Miller, Senior Vice President for Organizational Development, Field Operations for the Boys and Girls Clubs of America.Miller says a majority of their Boys and Girls Clubs have opened in some capacity."With many of our schools being virtual, we have about 1,300 sites that are opening for the full day to be these virtual learning hubs or safety zones, if you will, which is a different place for us. And it's a very expensive place for us. Clubs are increasing their operating costs," said Miller. Boys and Girls Clubs reports it’s spending at least three times as much as it normally does on after-school care to accommodate safety protocols for COVID-19. YMCA of the USA says they've lost more than billion in revenue since the spring and that after-school programs are suffering financially right now."Very much so. I think it's a combination of things. One is that the programs that are operating its much more expensive to do. In many cases they have to rent additional space, they have to hire more staff, it's longer hours. We are pushing very hard in the next COVID bill to get some federal resources into after-school [programs] so that we can do this one-time short-term influx of money," said O'Malley.Some after-school programs are even helping families cover the costs of childcare, since many parents are finding it hard economically right now to pay the fees."We are looking to the communities for that support but we’re also looking to the federal government for that support. Ys are facing financial hardship that only the federal government can provide, so we’re really asking Congress to give back and look for that relief for charities that are so important to keep non-profits open like the Y open," said O'Malley. 3810

  

OTAY MESA, Calif. (KGTV) – A growing number of locals who trying to make it in San Diego are flying out of the Tijuana International Airport to save money on airline tickets.In only its third year of service, San Diego's Cross Border Xpress, or “CBX”, is soaring in sales. “You can save so much money by traveling out of CBX,” said Luis Palacios, CBX's Chief Commercial Officer. The pedestrian bridge in Otay Mesa goes over the border and into the Tijuana airport. It’s located about 20 minutes south of downtown San Diego. RELATED: What to know about using Tijuana's Cross Border Xpress“More than 85 percent of our travel for the whole year, by the end of 2018, crossed in less than 15 minutes,” said Palacios. San Diegan Arun Srinivasan uses CBX to fly to business meetings in Mexico. “It’s essentially like having a second airport in San Diego that just costs less,” Srinivasan said. “Every roundtrip flight, I've saved three to four hundred dollars.” RELATED: Making It in San Diego: Local cities among top in the U.S. for staycations Srinivasan said CBX also saves him time. “[Departing from] San Diego, I have to connect through LAX or San Francisco." From the Tijuana airport, there are 35 nonstop flights throughout Mexico and two to China. Security is a concern for some travelers. A 2019 report ranked Tijuana as the most dangerous city in the world. Palacios said CBX puts safety first. “It’s totally secure. PINE VALLEY, Calif. (KGTV) -- Three men riding in the trunk of a car during an apparent human-smuggling attempt in the East County highlands were injured Tuesday, one seriously, when the driver crashed the sedan at high speed while trying to evade the U.S. Border Patrol.The 18-year-old driver of the orange Mazda 6 sped off when federal personnel directed him into a secondary inspection area at a USBP checkpoint on Interstate 8 in Pine Valley about 11:45 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.Border Patrol agents gave chase, tailing the car to the west as the young man fled at speeds exceeding 100 mph, CHP public-affairs Officer Travis Garrow said.RELATED: Two DACA recipients arrested for involvement in human smuggling?Near state Route 79, the suspect lost control of the sedan while trying to use the southern shoulder of I-8 to pass slower-moving traffic.  The Mazda veered off the north side of the freeway, struck a wooden post and tumbled down a grassy embankment, overturning on the way down before coming to rest on its wheels.One of the occupants of the trunk, a 31-year-old man, was ejected during the crash and was badly hurt, Garrow said.The other two, ages 27 and 19, suffered moderately serious injuries. The suspect's name was not immediately released.High-speed chases are on the rise. In early March, a Ford Expedition crashed with four people inside, two were ejected when it overturned in almost the same location.Early April saw a truck pulling a horse trailer try to get away from pursuing agents; 19 people were stuffed inside that trailer.Six were hurt when it rolled over about 55 miles east of San Diego, also on I-8.
