Millions of people are still unemployed in the United States. On one hand, the unemployment rate has been going down since its peak in June. On the other hand, it’s still almost triple what it was before the pandemic.“I just never anticipated this is where we would be in September,” said Bridget Altenburg, president of the National Able Network. For 40 years, the National Able Network has been helping people find work. But in the past six months, it has been working overtime on that. The organization has been getting roughly 100 calls for employment help a day, serving more than 10,000 people since March.“It is scary for the people that we are talking to,” said Altenburg. “It’s scary for them because we thought it would be a month or two months of unemployment, and here we are, basically six months later, trying to help people navigate who’s hiring.”Altenburg has two key pieces of advice for anyone unemployed right now. One, she is emphatic that there are employers out there hiring.“There are employers that are desperate for people,” said Altenburg. “So, don’t immediately assume that there is nothing out there, so I might as well not look.”Secondly, Altenburg recommends anyone unemployed take a moment to figure out potential jobs in current high-demand fields and think creatively about how your current skill sets apply to those potential jobs.“Don’t sell yourself short in terms of what makes you uniquely qualified for that role,” she added. For example, you wouldn’t think of a restaurant worker having a unique skill set to be a good fit in the IT field, but the National Able Network has been training them to switch over and IT employers are flocking to recruit these workers.“People who have been servers intuitively know customer service in a way that I could never teach somebody that is in IT,” Altenburg explained. In addition to the National Able Network, there is also about 2,400 government-funded American Job Centers nationwide offering free career and job hunt services. In addition, most public libraries, even many community colleges, are offering free resume and some career services help as well.“At Lyft, when we think of the way we can make on communities, we think about how we can use transportation to do so,” said Lisa Boyd with Lyft. The ride-share company has even jumped in to help the millions on the job hunt. It is providing free rides, now in 20 cities, to people going to and from job interviews, job training, and even free rides to work until they get their first paycheck at their new job.The program started in 2019, but at the beginning of the pandemic, Lyft expanded it to help with the increased need.“We have a job access hub on our Lyft website,” said Boyd. “That will help you be able to go in and sign up on a form.”Anyone in need of the free ride while you job hunt or start a new job can go to Lyft's Job Access Page on its website. All you have to do is provide info on where you live, what kind of help you need, and the site will connect you with your local United Way or Goodwill. The two partner organizations actually distribute Lyft’s free rides, and they both offer additional free career services help. 3184

MARYVILLE, Tenn. – Ruby Tuesday has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. The casual dining chain says it's pursuing a comprehensive financial and operational restructuring aimed at reducing the company’s current debt and enhancing operations to continue to serve guests in the future. In a statement, Ruby Tuesday CEO Shawn Lederman said the restructuring will allow the business to reposition for long-term stability as it recovers from the unprecedented impact of COVID-19.The restaurant says it will continue serving guests as usual, with increased distancing, cleaning and sanitization protocols in place to ensure safety and peace of mind in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.“This announcement does not mean ‘Goodbye, Ruby Tuesday,’” wrote Lederman. The company also notes that Ruby Tuesday gift cards and “So Connected Rewards” will continue to be valid and retain their value through the bankruptcy process.“Our restructuring demonstrates a commitment to Ruby Tuesday’s future viability as we work to preserve thousands of team member jobs,” Lederman continued in his statement. “Our guests can be assured that during the Chapter 11 process, we will continue to deliver welcoming service and provide a safe environment for guests and team members, while serving fresh, signature products that only Ruby Tuesday can offer. With this critical step in our transformation for long-term financial health – this is ‘Hello’, to a stronger Ruby Tuesday.”Though a timeline for the bankruptcy was not provided, the company says it intends to move through the process as quickly as possible. 1600

Many mental health facilities were closed earlier this year due to the pandemic, so therapists had to find new ways to reach their patients. Over the course of 2020, providers have come up with a number of innovative ways to help -- such as by using biofeedback devices.“They're really visually able to see OK, this is actually working and calming me down. And secondarily for our therapist, it allows them another data point to watch what their patient is doing,” Brett Shrewsbury, chief commercial officer for Meru Health, said. It’s just one of the tools in the toolbox for mental health therapists to better connect with and understand their patients without meeting in person.“It allows us and the therapist to take the patient through exercises of deep breathing and heart rate variability and shows visually, within our app and the Bluetooth connection we have, how their deep breathing is having a positive impact,” Shrewsbury said. “We built a program that solely is to treat depression and anxiety effectively. So there’s self-care and digital content and it’s guided by that licensed therapist that's taking the patient through.”Meru Health works with a number of companies and health plans, one of them being the Mental Health Center of Denver.“Our goal was to meet people where they are and they’re on these screens,” Alires Almon, director of innovation for The Mental Health Center of Denver, said.“Part of our digital capabilities include the text messages, then we have the curated resources that people can explore on their own,” she said. “People that we serve get the opportunity to get all these digital capabilities at their fingertips.”This comes at a time where taking care of your mental health is more important than ever. 78% of Americans said the coronavirus is a significant source of stress, according to the American Psychological Association.More than 1 in 3 adults have reported symptoms of anxiety or depression during the pandemic, up from 11% last year, according to information from the Kaiser Family Foundation.“The demand is increasing day over day, and especially the longer this pandemic happens the more demand and the more acceptable it is for people to reach out which creates more of a demand,” Almon said. But with the use of technology, centers like this one can help meet that rising demand.“Looking at our total toolkit, technology is an important means to become a force multiplier,” Wes Williams, vice president at The Mental Health Center of Denver, said.He said they went from five to 4,000 telehealth sessions a week in a one- week transition. However, it will take more than telehealth sessions to expand the number of people they can help.“A therapist can still only see five or six patients a day even through teletherapy, where as with our program where they’re texting back and forth more than they’re doing face to face sessions, we’re able to scale right now almost six times scalability,”Shrewsbury said.Mental health centers are experimenting with more possibilities to help reach people where they’re at.“Everyone realized there's a need for mental health and I think people are starting to bring innovation in,” Shrewsbury said. 3199

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Police say 87 demonstrators who gathered at the home of Kentucky's attorney general to demand justice for Breonna Taylor have been arrested. News outlets report protesters with the social justice organization Until Freedom gathered Tuesday for a sit-in at the home of Daniel Cameron. Police say they were charged with the felony crime of "intimidating a participant in a legal process"; disorderly conduct, and trespassing. Taylor was fatally shot by police on March 13 during a narcotics investigation. Her death set off weeks of protests and calls for the officers to be charged. Among those arrested were Kenny Stills, a wide receiver for the Houston Texans, and Porsha Williams of "Real Housewives of Atlanta."Stills tweeted a picture of his mugshot. 785
