UNITED NATIONS, April 14 (Xinhua) -- Representatives from UN Security Council members and other countries on Wednesday sent their deep condolences to the Chinese government and people for a strong earthquake that hit the northwestern part of the country and killed at least 589 people. The diplomats from nearly 40 countries and the European Union offered their condolences to China when they were taking the floor at an open Council debate on the situation in the Middle East, which kicked off here Wednesday morning. The representatives were from the only countries which inscribed to speak at the open debate.Representatives from Austria, Bosnia, Brazil, Britain, France, Gabon, Japan, Lebanon, Nigeria, Russia and the United States offered their condolences to the Chinese delegation for the 7.1-magnitude earthquake, which struck northwest China's Qinghai Province early Wednesday.Condolences were also from such countries as Afghanistan, Argentina, Botswana, Cuba, Egypt, Iran, Kenya, Kuwait, Nicaragua, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Syria, Tunisia and Venezuela.Earlier, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and president of the UN General Assembly Ali Treki also sent their deep condolences to China over the strong earthquake. At least 589 people have reportedly died and 10,000 others were injured in the wake of the deadly earthquake, local authorities said.
BEIJING, May 7 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on Friday pledged to work with Bosnia and Herzegovina to enhance the bilateral relationship between the two nations."We should work together to achieve this goal based on mutual respect, equality and mutual benefit," Wen said during his talks with Nikola Spiric, chairman of the Council of Ministers of Bosnia and Herzegovina.Hailing the traditional friendship between the two nations, Wen said China respects the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and respects its peoples's choice of their development path.Wen hoped the western Balkan region would achieve lasting peace and stability.Wen said trade and economic cooperation between the two countries has good prospects. The Chinese government encourages reputable companies to invest in Bosnia and Herzegovina and to participate in its economic construction. He welcomed Bosnian enterprises to further develop the Chinese market and expand exports to China. Both sides should make joint efforts to promote cultural, educational and tourism exchanges to enhance mutual understanding between the two peoples and friendship, he said.Spiric thanked China for its valuable support and help.Bosnia and Herzegovina attached importance to China's development, and wished to strengthen its friendly and cooperative relations with the country, he said.Bosnia and Herzegovina is willing to maintain high-level exchanges with China and will continue to firmly support China in major issues concerning China's core interests.Spiric hoped to work with China to strengthen cooperation in economy and trade, infrastructure construction, education, cultural exchanges, and welcomed Chinese enterprises to invest in Bosnia and Herzegovina.Bosnia and Herzegovina welcomes Chinese people to visit the country, he added. After their talks, Wen and Spiric witnessed the signing of cooperation documents between the two countries.China's top political advisor Jia Qinglin met with Spiric later on Friday, applauding the country's adherence to the one-China policy.Jia, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), said the CPPCC would increase exchanges and cooperation with the country's parliament, to contribute to the development of bilateral ties.Chinese vice premier Zhang Dejiang also met with Spiric Friday evening, hoping the two sides would expand cooperation in construction of highways and power plants.Spiric is the first prime minister of Bosnia and Herzegovina to visit China since the two countries forged diplomatic ties 15 years ago.Spiric will also visit Shanghai to attend the National Pavilion Day of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and tour Xi'an, capital of northwest China's Shaanxi province.
BEIJING, June 1 (Xinhua) -- China has promising growth prospects and should not be blamed for world imbalances, says Danny Quah, a renowned British economist."Emergency financing that was placed in the Chinese economy to counter the downturn from the 2008 global financial crisis was the right thing...The imbalances is a global problem, not a China problem," said Quah, a professor at the London School of Economics and Political Science.China did the right thing in infusing its economy with fiscal stimulus, Quah said in a recent interview with Xinhua. He also declined to describe the ballooning real estate prices as a bubble, pointing out "the strong fundamentals" of China's economy. He said the expansion of China's housing construction will be proved useful eventually, given the fact that "China is still engaging in the task of moving hundreds of millions of people from rural areas to urban China to continue to power its manufacturing and industrial progress.""So I would not describe it as a collapse of real estate bubble, we can look forward to a rationalization of housing and real estate prices," Quah said. "The improvement and expansion of housing stock will play an important role in continuing to move the Chinese economy forward.""I think Chinese fundamentals will continue to be strong. And a little bit of high inflation, as long as it doesn't break out into some kind of runaway high inflation, is probably no bad thing," he said. "We will get it under control again as the Chinese government did previously."On allegations that China deliberately keeps its currency RMB weak to obtain unfair advantages in trade with countries like the United States, Quah said people who draw such a false conclusion are misguided."The United States is running a trade deficit not just against China. It is running a trade deficit against almost 100 other countries," he said. "China is not unique in how it is exporting more to the United States than it's importing."The U.S. government was beginning to run a large trade deficit long before China's trade surpluses started grow, he added."If you take the ratio of China's bilateral trade surplus against the U.S. as a fraction of the U.S.' overall bilateral trade deficit against all of the countries, it has remained constant over the last 15, 20 years," Quah said.
BEIJING, April 22 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese government announced a string of emergency measures Wednesday to provide convenient financial services for people in the quake-hit Qinghai Province and to support reconstruction. The People's Bank of China, the central bank, would lower the deposit reserve ratio for financial institutions in the quake area by 1 percentage point from Wednesday to help increase lending, said a statement posted on the website of the central bank.It would also reduce its rediscount rate for local Rural Credit Cooperatives by 1 percentage point to ease their financial burden. The rediscount rate is the interest rate charged to banks and deposit institutions when they borrow money from the central bank. The return of loans extended before the earthquake was not imperative until June 30, 2011. Residents and companies would be exempted from bad credit records if they could return their loans before the deadline, the central bank said. The statement urged local banks to resume business as soon as possible to meet rising demand for financial services. They should set up temporary outlets in tents, extend office hours and take measures to ensure adequate cash supplies so that residents could deposit and withdraw money conveniently. The measures were jointly introduced by the People's Bank of China, the China Banking Regulatory Commission, the China Insurance Regulatory Commission and the China Securities Regulatory Commission. The 7.1-magnitude quake struck the Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Yushu on April 14, leaving 2,183 people dead, 84 missing, and 12,135 injured as of Wednesday.
HAIKOU, April 25 (Xinhua) -- China's fishery administration said on Sunday it had started regular patrols of the South China Sea, sending two vessels to take over from two others currently escorting Chinese fishing boats in the area."China Yuzheng 301 and 302 take over from China Yuzheng 311 and 202, which have been patrolling the sea area of Nansha Islands since April 1," said Wu Zhuang, director of Administration of Fishery and Fishing Harbor Supervision for South China Sea under the Ministry of Agriculture. He said the patrol ships were sent to escort Chinese fishing boats in the South China Sea and reinforce China's fishing rights of the waters around Nansha Islands. The two ships set sail from Sanya, a coastal city in China's Southernmost Island Province of Hainan, on Sunday.China's patrol vessels escort the country's fishing boats and help treat fishermen who fall ill, Wu said.
