SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Days after pleading guilty to misusing campaign funds, Congressman Duncan Hunter has announced he will resign from Congress.Hunter, who represented the 50th District, pleaded guilty Tuesday to a federal charge of conspiracy to misuse campaign funds for personal use. Though after the plea, it wasn't clear if the embattled Congressman would resign.“Shortly after the Holidays I will resign from Congress. It has been an honor to serve the people of California’s 50th District, and I greatly appreciate the trust they have put in me over these last 11 years," Rep. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Authorities are searching for a felony traffic violator in Mission Valley who drove onto trolley tracks while fleeing from police during a chase Sunday morning. Police say officers tried to pull over a vehicle on Hotel Circle shortly before 9 a.m. because the vehicle didn’t have a front license plate.During the chase, the suspect failed to stop and ran several lights at high speeds. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Authorities are investigating a fire that destroyed a car parked on the side of the freeway in Logan Heights early Monday morning.According to the California Highway Patrol, The incident happened at about 3 a.m. on the southbound lanes of Interstate 15 at Oceanview Blvd.When fire crews arrived, the car was fully engulfed. Firefighters were able to put the fire out quickly.When the smoke cleared, deputies found a rag in the gas tank and says it appeared the car had been set on fire intentionally.No injuries were reported.Arson investigators are looking into the cause of the fire. 613

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — City Council members will consider two proposals to develop vacant city-owned properties into permanent housing for homeless veterans, seniors, and youth and young adults.The two proposals, conditionally awarded development bids by the city, will also provide on-site supportive services. One proposal by Community Housing Works’ includes building 26 units for chronically homeless youth and young adults on a .336-acre site at the former Serra Mesa Library. That proposal includes on-site case management by YMCA Youth and Family Services. Ideally, the development would open in August 2023.The second proposal by San Diego Community Housing Corporation would turn the 1.42-acre Scripps Ranch Park and Ride site into 60 units for veterans and seniors. San Diego Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly would provide on-site services. That proposal aims to open in January 2024."After a comprehensive review, we determined that both organizations submitted well-qualified and responsive proposals," said Deputy Chief Operating Officer Erik Caldwell. "Now, we will work on presenting both proposals to the City Council, so construction on these vital permanent housing projects can commence as soon as possible."The two proposals are in addition to two recent hotel purchases by the city to help homeless individuals transition into permanent housing. Last year, Mayor Kevin Faulconer announced that eight city properties would be offered up to develop into permanent supportive housing as well.In 2019, San Diego's Community Action Plan on Homelessness identified the need to increase permanent supportive housing by 2,659 units within the next 10 years, with 60% of those units developed within the first four years.A date hasn't been announced as to when the council will consider the two latest proposals. 1841

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Approximately 200 California Army National Guard troops are in San Diego County at the request of San Diego Sheriff Bill Gore, to deter looting following last weekend's events in La Mesa.About 100 troops are stationed at the La Mesa Police Headquarters. The rest are in an undisclosed area ready to move anywhere in the county.“We’ve seen arson, we’ve seen looting, and especially in La Mesa where we were there assisting La Mesa Police Department,” said Gore. “To be quite honest, the crowd overwhelmed us, we had not enough resources there, and we were in a position of defending the La Mesa Police Department, so it didn’t get burned to the ground like two banks did.”After a chaotic scene unfolded in La Mesa on Saturday following a peaceful demonstration, several businesses were looted and damaged, two banks burned down, and La Mesa City Hall sustained fire damage.“I believe that the police were overwhelmed in La Mesa, and they need backup,” said La Mesa resident Teresa Olmsted. “There’s those that are trying to get their point across and those that are taking advantage.”Gore said the troops do not have the same authority as officers and cannot make an arrest, but they can detain suspects until officers arrive.They will guard businesses and buildings where needed.“They do not have peace officer powers. So they will be there to protect infrastructure, they can escort ambulances and fire engines if they need to get into a particular scene to put out a fire or render aid to somebody,” he said. “The enforcement actions will be left to police officers.
