EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) — A gas leak in the East County forced several businesses to abruptly close Friday, as crews worked to stop the leak.The gas leak occurred North Marshall Ave. and Petree St. at about 12 p.m. when crews with Helix Water District struck a gas pipe while installing a communications line, according to El Cajon Fire Department.A representative with the water district said HWD personnel arrived at the scene after the rupture had occurred and are not responsible for the damage.Crews evacuated a nearby shopping center, where customers at the Black Bear Diner were given five minutes to leave the area. The leak also forced a nearby Rock Church and school to evacuate.For four hours, several blocks were closed to motorists and MTS trolley and bus service were impacted in the area.SDG&E has since stopped the leak by pinching off a section of the pipe in another area. Crews plan to take an additional two hours to repair the damged section of the gas line.No injuries were reported. 1017
DUBLIN, Calif. – Actress Lori Loughlin has surrendered herself to authorities to begin her two-month prison sentence for her involvement in the college admissions scam.NBC News and The Associated Press report that Loughlin reported to the Federal Correctional Institution in Dublin, California, on Friday to be processed.The former “Full House” star showed up early. She wasn’t ordered to report to the San Francisco- area prison until Nov. 19, NBC News reports.Earlier this year, Loughlin and her husband, fashion designer Mossimo Giannulli, pleaded guilty for paying 0,000 in bribes to cheat the college admissions process.It came to light in 2019 that the couple paid the money to get their two daughters into the University of Southern California as crew recruits, even though they aren’t rowers.Loughlin and Giannulli were among several people arrested in the case that was called “Operation Varsity Blues.”Loughlin was handed her two-month prison sentence in August, when a judge accepted her plea deal. (KGTV) — A vehicle crashed into an East County restaurant Wednesday, before the driver fled on foot and left behind a massive mess.The vehicle careened through the Ali Baba restaurant at 421 E. Main St. before 2:30 p.m., before the driver fled the scene a short distance to park the vehicle and continued to flee on foot, according to El Cajon Police.No one in the building was injured, but photos from Thair Behnan, the manager of the restaurant, showed a massive mess of shattered glass and wall.The suspect was described as a Hispanic male, wearing a white shirt, and jeans.Anyone with information on the incident or who locates the suspect is asked to call El Cajon Police at 619-579-3311. 718
EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) -- Nearly 1,000 students left without answers after three charter schools forced to shut down. In a lawsuit filed by the Grossmont Union High School District in 2015, a judge ruled against the charter schools in Lemon Grove, El Cajon and Lakeside demanding they shut their doors June 28 for good. The charter students say they’re non-traditional and don’t want to go back into public schools. The district superintendent says they charter schools were unlawful when the charters got authorization through the Julian and Borrego Springs school districts. 586
