San Diego (KGTV)- For weeks, the pandemic left nursing students at CSU San Marcos in limbo when it came to completing their graduation requirements. Now, thanks to the county, the students can get their clinical hours.When the pandemic hit in March, nursing students were forced out of public health facilities to get their hands-on experience for their classes.“We didn’t know when we were going to go back, and it was halfway through the spring semester,” says nursing student Winter Minton.Minton will be graduating from CSU San Marcos in the spring.The nursing student says for weeks, students were unsure about how they would obtain their clinical hours. A total of 135 hours are needed for two classes.“When we were ready to go back, the county was not willing, ready to have nursing students on site at all,” says Course Coordinator Madelyn Lewis.In August, the county opened a COVID-19 testing clinic on campus and allowed nursing students to work on-site. The students assist patients with self-administered COVID tests while wearing full protective gear.“Not only does it benefit us, but it benefits so many people,” says Minton. “I heard people driving all the way down from Irvine or Fullerton just to get the exam done.”Minton says the walk-in clinic sees more than 300 patients a day.The testing site is open to the public seven days a week. 1363

However, there's less money and resources going to them. The average rent in the county is now up to ,992, and about the city's lowest income renters are spending 70 percent of their money on housing. Stephen Russell, who heads the San Diego Housing Federation, said the region took a hit in 2012, when the state eliminated redevelopment funds - 20 percent of which were reserved for affordable housing. Now, as cost of living rises, there are nearly 10,000 homeless San Diegans, thousands of them sleeping on the streets.Bruce Carron, 72, was one of them, until he got into Talmadge Gateway, a new 60-unit complex for low-income seniors with ongoing medical needs."It's just more than what I thought I deserved, but somewhere along the line God wanted me to win somewhere in this crazy life that we have," Carron said. The city will soon decide whether to place a property tax bond on the November ballot to pay for more affordable housing. It would charge for every 0,000 of assessed value, and pay for 7,500 new homes. "Until we solve the problem of people sleeping on our streets, I don't think I can sleep in my bed with a good conscience," Russell said.The San Diego Taxpayers Association doesn't have a position on the potential measure, but in a statement chief execrative Haney Hong said more research was needed."Before we decide to throw more money at the problem, let's understand what we're getting right now and how our public agencies are performing," he said. The city rules committee will consider the bond for the ballot next month.  1924

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Visitors and locals are expected to flock to San Diego beaches this Fourth of July weekend.While some beaches will close in California for the holiday weekend, San Diego County officials will keep local beaches open.San Diego County Supervisor Nathan Fletcher said no COVID-19 community outbreaks had been linked to beaches, and without the data, it would not make sense to close them off.According to Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county’s public health officer, leaders of San Diego’s coastal communities said they believe they can manage the enforcement of social distancing and facial coverings this weekend.Longtime Solana Beach residents Richard and Lori Brenckman are frustrated by the idea of crowds flocking to the beaches during a pandemic.“The general public has shown that it’s not trustworthy to social distance,” said Lori Brenckman. “They want to gather, and most people have proven that they won’t follow the rules.”Beachgoers are required to maintain social distancing and wear a facial covering when they come within six feet of someone not from the same household. Mixing with other groups is prohibited.Lifeguards across the county are preparing for the busy weekend.“It is the big holiday of the summer, so we expect giant crowds,” said Lifeguard Lt. Rick Romero with San Diego Fire-Rescue. “This a tourist destination; everyone wants to come to San Diego. Whether for convenience or for price, third-party repair shops are the choice for many customers. Unfortunately, some Apple users with the latest phones say they're not able to go to third-party shops. Four years ago, Christopher McQueen said he found the perfect niche business. “People are always breaking their phones, late at night,” McQueen said.He is the owner of Mobile Cell Doctors. Any brand, any phone, any version. He will come to you and fix your phone.“To be able to fix your phone in 10 minutes, versus a 3-hour fiasco at Apple, it was a need that was definitely there,” McQueen said. He said he can fix any hardware problems, except on the most recent iPhone models - iPhone 8, 8 Plus and X.Just recently, iPhone 8 user Lucas Peckham went to McQueen to get his broken screen replaced. His choices were 0 with McQueen or 9 at the Apple Store. He chose the cheaper, more convenient option.Peckham said everything was flawless until one morning, he woke up to a phone with a frozen screen. He could not swipe, touch, type, or do anything with his device. Peckham said it happened after his phone automatically updated overnight, installing the Apple 11.3 Software.McQueen said he was suddenly inundated with calls from all of his previous iPhone 8 customers. “It’s been a nightmare,” McQueen said. He said he had fixed about 100 iPhone 8’s in the last six months. He suggested to his customers, to do what they hoped to avoid by going to him in the first place - go to the Apple Store. But Peckham said, when he showed Apple the problem, he was told, because he previously used a third-party repairman, they could not repair it. Instead, he had to replace it with a brand new screen for 0 - or buy a whole new phone. “I totally felt screwed,” Peckham said. With no other option, Peckham said he gave in, spending six hours at the Apple Store, and paying up the 0. “It was basically a way for Apple to create kind of a monopoly on the iPhone screen,” Peckham said. Last month, California became the 18th state to introduce a “Right to Repair” Bill, which would require electronics manufacturers to make repair information and parts available to owners and third-party repair shops.McQueen hopes this legislation passes, so mom-and-pop business owners like him also get to have a piece of the pie. “I would love to fix those,” McQueen said. “But until they release the software to run the phones that would allow third-parties to work on those devices, we can’t fix them.”10News spoke to Apple, who said they do work with Authorized third-party dealers that are not Apple Stores.
