BOSTON (AP) — Basketball Hall of Famer K.C. Jones, who won eight NBA championships as a Celtics player in the 1960s and two more as the coach of the Celtics team that took the titles in 1984 and '86, has died. He was 88.The Celtics said Jones' family confirmed on Friday that he died at an assisted living facility in Connecticut, where he had been receiving care for Alzheimer's disease for the past few years. In a statement, the Celtics said Jones was both a "fierce competitor and a gentleman.""He made his teammates better, and he got the most out of the players he coached," the Celtics said. "Never one to seek credit, his glory was found in the most fundamental of basketball ideals – being part of a winning team. The Celtics family mourns his loss, as we celebrate his remarkable career and life."In 1955-56, Jones and Bill Russell led San Francisco to back-to-back NCAA championships, the Associated Press reported. Russell and Jones also won Olympic gold medals at the 1956 Games in Melbourne while playing basketball on the U.S. team.Jones joined Russell in the NBA when the Celtics drafted Jones in the second round of the 1956 NBA Draft, and they both went on to win eight-straight NBA championships from 1959-66.In 1967, Jones retired, and the Celtics hung his No. 25 from the rafters. After retiring as a player, Jones began coaching, first in college and then joined the Los Angeles Lakers in 1971. In 1972, he won another NBA title.Jones earned three more NBA championships with the Celtics, first as an assistant coach in 1981, and then as head coach in 1984 and 1986. 1595

BOSTON, Mass. – A statue of Christopher Columbus was beheaded in Boston.A WHDH photographer discovered the vandalism at Christopher Columbus Park on Atlantic Avenue shortly after midnight on Wednesday.WHDH reports that the same statue was vandalized with red paint and the phrase “Black Lives Matter” in 2015. And in 2006, the head was broken off and went missing for six days before it was put back on, WHDH says. The city’s mayor, Marty Walsh, told WBZ-TV that the statue will be put in storage and there will be conversations about the “historic meaning” of the incident and whether it will ever go back up.This Massachusetts statue is one of many that have been vandalized, taken down or destroyed amid the ongoing protests over racial justice following the death of George Floyd.Another statue of Christopher Columbus in Richmond, Virginia, was torn down by protesters, set on fire and then thrown into a lake on Tuesday night, WTVR reports. In other states, there’s a renewed movement to remove confederate statues and monuments, which some say glorify the Civil War-era South. Statues were recently removed from Indianapolis and Jacksonville. And in Richmond, the former capitol of the Confederacy, Virginia Governor Ralph Northam has announced plans to remove a statue of Confederate General Robert E. Lee. However, a circuit court judge has delayed the removal by granting a 10-day injunction. 1407

BALTIMORE, Md. — A mom walks into a bar. There is no punch line. Just a punch in the gut. A mom sold her baby, Marion Louise Smith, for cash and her older daughter for a car 51 years ago at a bar that use to be called Ken Tins. It sat right on the corner of Chester and Fairmount in Butchers Hill in Baltimore.Kenneth Suggs was asked if he wanted the baby for cash. Shocked and concerned for the child, Suggs used his whole paycheck to take Smith.Suggs, an electrician, and his IHOP waitress wife Gail took in Smith and raised her. Smith now lives with her family in Middle River, Maryland. But when her father died, his wish for Smith was to find her sister.  And that's what she's doing. 761
