HANGZHOU, Sept. 14 (Xinhua) -- China's top political advisor, Jia Qinglin, called for more efforts to step up the transformation of the nation's economic growth mode and ecological protection for better development in the next five years.Jia, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, made the remarks during a five-day inspection tour in eastern Zhejiang Province that concluded Tuesday, visiting rural areas, towns, factories and companies.Jia urged in-depth research over new circumstances for an "elaborate planning" for the five years to 2015.Jia Qinglin (2nd R, Front), chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, who is also a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, inspects development of new and clean energy in a company in Changxing, east China's Zhejiang Province, Sept. 12, 2010. SHANGHAI, Oct. 30 (Xinhua) -- China said it would continue close cooperation with the United Nations as Ban Ki-moon, the UN Secretary-General, visited Shanghai Saturday.In talks with Ban Saturday night, Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi applauded UN' s important role in world affairs and expressed China's support to and participation in the organization's work."China stands ready to maintain close coordination and cooperation with the UN. We will give the organization and the Secretary-General strong support," Yang told Ban.The UN chief thanked China's backing to the UN and himself and expressed willingness to further cooperation with China.Congratulating China on the success of the World Expo, Ban said he had a "most impressive" day in Shanghai Saturday by seeing the "biggest expo" in his life.Ban visited pavilions including the UN, China, Republic of Korea and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. He will attend the World Expo closing ceremony and opening ceremony of World Expo Summit Forum slated for Sunday.Yang and Ban also exchanged views on Millennium Development Goals (MDG), climate change and other international and regional affairs.

BEIJING, Sept. 30 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping said here Thursday that China will join hands with Cuba to strengthen cooperation and promote bilateral relations.Xi made the remarks when meeting with Vice President of the Council of Ministers of Cuba Ricardo Cabrisas Ruiz, who was here to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of China-Cuba relations.Extending the greetings of China's leadership to President of the Council of Ministers of Cuba Raul Castro Ruz and First Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba Fidel Castro Ruz, Xi thanked Cabrisas for coming to China to attend the 50th anniversary celebrations.Xi reviewed the history of China-Cuba relations. BEIJING, Sept. 19 (Xinhua) -- China's meteorological authority raised the level of alert for Typhoon Fanapi to the second highest on Sunday as it nears the country's south coast.Fanapi, the 11th typhoon to hit China this year, will move westward at a speed of 20 kilometers per hour, and make landfall between Monday morning and noon at the coast between Guangdong and Fujian provinces, the China Meteorological Administration (CMA) said.The shipping route linking Xiamen in Fujian Province, and Jinmen, in Taiwan, was closed Sunday with Fanapi approaching, said local authorities.CMA urged local authorities to make full preparations to guard against the strongest typhoon this year.Zhu Xiaoxiang, an expert with CMA, expected Fanapi to subside somewhat shortly after making landfall, and heavy rains were unlikely during the upcoming Chinese traditional mid-autumn festival, which will fall on September 22 this year.

BEIJING, Oct. 21 (Xinhua) -- China Thursday expressed its hope that East Asian cooperation would deepen through the upcoming series of leaders' meetings in Hanoi, Vietnam."China attaches importance to and actively takes part in East Asian cooperation. In the series of meetings, China will review with other countries the cooperation that has been carried out and discuss how to further promote the integration process of East Asian cooperation," said Assistant Foreign Minister Hu Zhengyue.Hu made the remarks at a press conference Thursday afternoon in which officials from the ministries of Commerce, Education and Finance briefed the press on Premier Wen Jiabao's scheduled attendance at the meetings.The meetings, lasting from Oct. 28 to 30, will include: the 13th summit between China and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) (10+1); the 13th summit between ASEAN, China, Japan and the Republic of Korea (ROK) (10+3); and the fifth East Asia Summit.Wen will also attend a meeting with the leaders of Japan and the ROK.Hu said China hopes the meetings would promote good-neighborliness and boost cooperation between China and the other Asian countries."During his visit, Premier Wen, together with participating leaders of other countries, will review the achievements of China-ASEAN cooperation, 10+3 cooperation, and East Asian cooperation, as well as cooperation concerning East Asia Summit. He will also elaborate on how to strengthen cooperation. We believe his tour will further consolidate China's good-neighborly relationships and expand reciprocal cooperation," he said."East Asian countries should enhance mutual understanding through dialogue and communication.
