LAS VEGAS (KTNV) — Stop hugging each other. That’s the eye-raising message from the World Health Organization as COVID-19 cases continue to rise across the globe.“There’s no better way to convey trust. No better way to convey camaraderie and humanity," said Dave Sylvester.Sylvester is what you may call a prolific hugger, traveling across the country and around the world, helping people in need, like buying dinner for essential workers and volunteering.“I am the hug man. I am the human high-five. I am all of that stuff,” he said.He’s on his way to Las Vegas where he held a personal record of more than 1,300 hugs back in 2017. But the pandemic has changed his routine due to social distancing.“I have gone from an average of 47 hugs and high fives a day to 9 hugs and high fives…since March,” he said.This comes as the WHO Monday asked people not to hug to prevent spreading COVID-19, especially in places like the U.S. where cases are spiking.“It’s a horrible thing to think that we would be here as the World Health Organization saying to people, don’t hug each other. It’s terrible, but that is the brutal reality in places like the United States right now,” Dr. Michael Ryan, executive director of the health emergencies program with the WHO.Psychologists say hugs can be great for mental health as it releases hormones that help with empathy and trust. While it’s not as good as hugging a real person or your pets, they say you might try hugging your pillow, or even a stuffed animal.“Don’t discount one of the secondary methods until you’ve tried it,” Jessica Shearin, a local psychologist, said.Sylvester says it’s unfortunate to not hug as much but says that’s not stopping him from meeting others.“We understood the severity of everything that’s going on and we just shared a smile. LEMON GROVE, Calif. (KGTV) -- Two men were arrested Monday after the San Diego Sheriff’s Department says they reportedly beat a man with a metal pipe in Lemon Grove. Deputies say they received a call about a man bleeding in the street around 10:43 a.m. Monday at the 7200 block of Pacific Avenue. After arriving, police found the 43-year-old mad lying on the sidewalk with a head wound. Witnesses told deputies four men in a light-blue vehicle chased the victim to the location and beat him with a “long stick, and a metal pipe.”After contacting a group of men associated with the vehicle, a 25-year-old man identified as Terrell Millard admitted to the assault. Deputies say he was booked into jail. A 15-year-old also admitted to the assault. Deputies say he was charged and released. 795

LITTLETON, Colo. — In one Colorado neighborhood, life is quiet, which makes what happened last Sunday hard to understand for many residents.A man named Scott Smith was arrested after claiming that his wife, Kanokwan Smith, tried to kill him with a butcher knife in their Littleton home. In an affidavit detailing the incident, he said he had no choice but to shoot and kill her. As of Sunday evening, Scott had not been charged in connection to the case and he is not in custody.For neighbor Dominique Naylor, who has known Kanokwan for more than a decade, the pain is unbearable. She said she was a hard worker and juggled three jobs."She’ll never be able to wrap her arms around her little girl again and he shouldn’t have that right," Naylor said. "He shouldn’t be out and he shouldn’t be free."She said there's not a question in her mind that Scott killed her, and other neighbors and friends agree, adding that Scott "wasn't the kind of person you ever wanted to see (Kanokwan) with."She said anybody who knew her friend knows she wouldn't hurt a fly."It just seems so unfair to live in a world that doesn’t have her in it because she’s just so kind and worked so hard and how could anyone hurt her?" Less than a year after the Boy Scouts of America decided to invite girls to join, the organization announced that it will refer to its older youth program as "Scouts BSA" starting in February 2019.The name change comes amid a new campaign slogan, "Scout Me In," that was made to emphasize the group's expansion from just boys to boys and girls."Cub Scouts is a lot of fun, and now it's available to all kids," Stephen Medlicott, National Marketing Group Director of Boy Scouts of America, said in a statement. "That's why we love 'Scout Me In' -- because it speaks to girls and boys and tells them, 'This is for you. We want you to join!'"The name change only applies to the program currently called Boy Scouts, which is available for teens ages 11-17. The Cub Scouts program, for children ages 5-10, will not undergo a name change. The name of the organization will remain Boy Scouts of America.The decision to open the scouting program to girls last October was both a reflection of growing progressive attitudes as well as a business decision. The Boy Scouts of America has seen declining numbers for years.
