LONDON (AP) — Anti-racism protesters in southwestern England have pulled down the statue of a slave trader and then dumped it into a harbor. The toppling of Edward Colston's statue was greeted with joyous scenes Sunday. Demonstrators attached ropes to the statue before pulling it down. Footage of the moments after the statue crashed to the ground saw hundreds, if not thousands, of local residents in ecstasy. The statue was then rolled into the nearby Bristol Harbor. LOS ANGELES (CNS) - As the use of legal and illegal fireworks around the Los Angeles area exploded this Fourth of July, fire departments saw a sharp increase in the number of calls for service, authorities said Sunday.It was the second-busiest day ever in calls for service from the Los Angeles County Fire Department, according to Dispatch Supervisor Imy McBride.The dispatchers usually field 1,000 calls on an average day, McBride said. On July 4th, they handled more than 1,600 calls, including tree, brush and roof fires.Los Angeles City firefighters responded to 1,770 calls for service from 3 a.m. July 4 to 3 a.m. Sunday, spokesman Nicholas Prange said. The department averaged 1,368 calls per day during the same period in 2019, he said.The July 4 fires included one that burned trees and the roof of a garden-style apartment building on Wilbur Avenue in Northridge with five people suffering smoke inhalation and 50 residents being displaced, Prange said.There was also a three-acre brush fire in Shadow Hills and a fire that spread from palm trees to the roof of an apartment building in Reseda.McBride and Prange said it was unclear whether the fires were related to the increase use of fireworks. 1216

LOS ANGELES (AP) — James Redford, a filmmaker, activist and son of actor Robert Redford, has died. He was 58. Robert Redford’s publicist, Cindi Berger, said in a statement Monday that his 84-year-old father is mourning with his family during this “difficult time.” James' wife, Kyle, confirmed in an interview with The Salt Lake Tribune that her husband died Friday from bile-duct cancer in his liver. She posted on twitter "Jamie died today. We're heartbroken. He lived a beautiful, impactful life (and) was loved by many. He will be deeply missed. As his wife of 32 (years), I'm most grateful for the two spectacular children we raised together. I don't know what we wouldn't done (without) them over the past 2 (years)." 731

LOS ANGELES -- Fire crews are on scene after a small brush fire broke out in a Los Angeles neighborhood Wednesday night. The fire broke out just before 6:30 p.m. in Pacific Palisades. LOS ANGELES (KGTV) -- One person was killed and three others injured in a drive-by shooting along the route of Nipsey Hussle’s funeral procession. According to LAPD, the shooting happened at 103rd Street and Main Street around 6:25 p.m. Police say three men and a woman between the ages of 30 and 50 were shot.According to police, several suspects in a gray Hyundai shot the victims. “We must stop this senseless violence,” LAPD Chief Michel Moore said in a tweet. The shooting came as thousands of fans lined the streets of South Los Angeles to honor the life of the slain rapper. The 33-year-old rapper was shot and killed on March 31 in front of The Marathon Clothing store. In early April, 29-year-old Eric Ronald Holder Jr., an aspiring rapper and acquaintance of Hussle, pleaded not guilty to one count each of murder and possession of a firearm by a felon, along with two counts of attempted murder.Holder could face life in prison if convicted of the charges, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office. Moore said Holder got into some type of personal dispute with the rapper outside the store, then left and returned with a handgun. The nature of the disagreement is still unclear.
