R. Lee Ermey, the actor known for his Golden Globe-nominated role as an intimidating drill sergeant in "Full Metal Jacket," died Sunday at the age of 74, according to a statement from his manager.Ermey died from complications of pneumonia, according to Bill Rogin, his manager, in a post on Twitter. CNN's calls and emails to Rogin were not returned.Ermey played the role of the tough Gunnery Sgt. Hartman who trains a new group of recruits in the 1987 film "Full Metal Jacket." He received a Golden Globe best supporting actor nomination for his role in the movie directed by Stanley Kubrick. The Vietnam veteran brought authenticity to the role after having spent 11 years in the Marine Corps from 1961 to 1972. He spent two years as a drill instructor at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego and rose to the rank of Staff Sergeant. He was medically retired for injuries in 1971 and in 2002 he received an honorary promotion to Gunnery Sergeant, according to a biography on his website. "It is extremely difficult to truly quantify all of the great things this man has selflessly done for, and on behalf of, our many men and women in uniform," Rogin said in a statement issued on Facebook. "He has also contributed many iconic and indelible characters on film that will live on forever."The US Army tweeted: "Rest In Peace, Gunny. We are grateful for your service to our country and for supporting our servicemembers. Semper Fi."Ermey also appeared in movies such as "Dead Man Walking," "Seven," "Prefontaine" and "Leaving Las Vegas."He also did voice overs and lighter content, lending his voice to "The Simpsons" and "Family Guy," as well as the "Toy Story" movies, where he voiced Sergeant or just "Sarge," the green Army soldier.Ermey was born in Emporia, Kansas, on March 24, 1944.After serving in the Marines, he enrolled at the University of Manila in the Philippines by using his G.I. bill benefits and he studied drama. "Apocalypse Now" was being filmed in the area and that's where Ermey had his first featured role in an acting career that spanned both film and television, according to his website."The real R. Lee Ermey was a family man, and a kind and gentle soul. He was generous to everyone around him. And, he especially cared deeply for others in need," Rogin said in a statement."Please support your men and women in uniform. That's what he wanted most of all."  2399

President Donald Trump signed an executive order aimed at changing policing practices as weeks-long protests against police brutality continue to take place across the country.Trump signed the order Tuesday afternoon at an event at the White House Rose Garden.WHAT IS IN IT?Trump's encouraged police departments to update their training and enact higher standards. He is also encouraging departments to implement accreditation policies for officers.According to senior White House officials, who briefed reporters Monday by phone, the President will also recommend departments call upon social workers to team up with officers when they respond to a non-violent 911 call.Trump is also expected to encourage the formation of a nationwide database to track officers who may be fired from one department in an effort to prevent another department from hiring them.Advisers to the President said Monday the administration would enforce the order by prioritizing departments who adopt the President's recommendations when they apply for federal grants.WHAT IS NOT IN IT?Trump said Tuesday that his order would ban police chokeholds — but stopped short of banning them completely. He said chokeholds would still be permitted if an officer's life is in danger. The order also does not address no-knock warrants or the legal doctrine of "qualified immunity" which currently prohibits officers from being sued in civil court.CONGRESS TAKES ACTION NEXTCongress is expected to debate more consequential pieces of legislation in the coming weeks. While Trump has denounced the officers involved in the arrest and death of George Floyd, he's consistently backed efforts supportive of law enforcement, often declaring himself the president of "law and order." 1751

Vanessa Guillen on July 29 prior to the #IamVanessaGuillen bill being released. The family is planning to introduce the bill to Congress on July 30. Guillen's remains were found last week near the Leon River in Texas. The soldier went missing from Fort Hood back in April. Her family believes Vanessa was sexually harassed by Spc. Aaron Robinson. Rates of syphilis, gonorrhea and chlamydia have climbed for the fourth consecutive year in the United States, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced Tuesday at the National STD Prevention Conference in Washington.Last year, nearly 2.3 million US cases of these sexually transmitted diseases were diagnosed, according to preliminary data. That's the highest number ever reported nationwide, breaking the record set in 2016 by more than 200,000 cases, according to the CDC."Sadly, it's not a surprising trend," said Rob Stephenson, a professor and director of the Center for Sexuality and Health Disparities at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, who was not involved in the new CDC research. 720
