SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Dozens of families and children with down syndrome were out at Crown Point Park in Pacific Beach for the first-ever Donut Run in San Diego. The money raised benefits Gigi's Playhouse which is a down syndrome achievement center. The center provides therapeutic and training programs for people of all ages. The services are completely free. Gigi's Playhouse has 37 locations across the country and even a few in Mexico. All of the staff are volunteers so donations are always welcome in order to continue providing the services. The goal was to raise ,000 but the organization doubled that goal.   667

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Democrats have secured control of two of the most powerful agencies in our region - the city and the county.San Diego will soon have a democratic mayor and an 8 to 1 advantage on the City Council. Couple that with Democrats flipping the County Board of Supervisors after years of Republican control, and it appears a whole new philosophy is on the way."I've been waiting 20 years,” said Nicole Capretz, who heads the Climate Action Campaign. “This is, I mean, decades in the making.”Climate Action Campaign has fought the Republican-controlled Board of Supervisors for years over how it handles the environment, prevailing in court over the county's climate plan.“They've twice had to rescind their climate plan publicly, which is unprecedented,” Capretz said.Capretz said she expects things to change in January, when the board will flip to a 3-2 Democrat advantage. That is expected to shift how the county addresses key issues like the environment, public health, and housing - in other words, no more sprawling back country developments that many times wind up challenged in a public vote.“We have wasted so much energy and so much time debating things that were not legally valid and should not have been done,” said County Supervisor Nathan Fletcher.Meanwhile, over at City hall, the Democrats will expand their veto proof advantage on the city council from 6-3 to 8-1. Republican Chris Cate is now the lone member of the G.O.P. on the council. “I think there needs to be a better job of communicating what we're about here locally as San Diegans, and getting our message out about what we feel is the best role of government in providing services to residents,” Cate said.The city has more than twice as many registered Democrats as Republicans, according to the registrar.San Diego’s new mayor and city council will be sworn in this December.The new board of supervisors will take over in January. 1932

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- From across the country to here in San Diego, there is no denying racial tensions between law enforcement and some communities. Locally, San Diego County has seen protests over officer-involved shootings and deaths of people in police custody. The 2016 shooting of Ugandan immigrant Alfred Olango sparked protests throughout El Cajon. Olango’s sister called 911 to report that her brother was displaying erratic behavior. Olango pulled something out of his pocket officers believed was a gun and, according to police, he assumed “what appeared to be a shooting stance.” Officer Richard Gonsalves fired his gun at least four times, killing Olango. Earlier this year, a jury in a separate civil suit found the officer acted reasonably.In National City, the death of Earl McNeil in 2018 sparked questions from his family and protests at city council meetings. McNeil, who had mental illness, went to the National City Police station seeking help, according to his family. Police said when he went to the station, he was making paranoid, threatening and irrational statements. Police say he told them he was in possession of a controlled substance. A statement from National City police said he was transported to County Jail for processing and exhibited signs of medical distress. According to his family, he suffered brain and nerve damage that led to his placement in a coma. He was pronounced dead June 11, 2018.Bishop Cornelius Bowser is a former gang member who grew up in San Diego. “I was up to no good every day,” he said. He turned his life around and is now a local activist, vocal about what he calls inequities in policing. That includes overpolicing, with more negative than positive interactions.“What I mean by being overpoliced is that the community is saturated with law enforcement. They’re looking specifically for specific people. When a black person, just by being black and young, that makes me a criminal. That makes me a threat,” Bowser said. He feels there is a lack of community policing, which is commonly defined as the use of partnerships and problem-solving techniques to proactively address concerns. “The culture has to be changed, the way [police] come into our community—they have to build those relationships. And they have to be here long enough,” Bowser said.The District Attorney's Office analyzed officer-involved shootings over the past 25 years. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Friends are grieving the loss of a young man killed in a South Bay crash that also sent five teenagers to the hospital. "This is like a bad dream and I want to wake up," said Ivan Nares.Nares says he got a heart-stopping call from his brother Gustavo, 18, from the emergency room Wednesday morning."He said, 'Ivan, Ivan, I need you. Please come,'" said Nares.RELATED: Driver killed in Otay Mesa SR-905 crash, several others injuredNares rushed to San Diego from his Tijuana home. His brother was a passenger in a Chrysler 300 packed with teens after a night at an indoor trampoline park.The CHP says around 9:15 p.m. Tuesday, the car was headed south on State Route 905 going at a high rate of speed when it hit the center divide near the Beyer Boulevard off-ramp. The 21-year-old driver was thrown from the car and died at the scene.Three males and two females, ranging from 15- to 19-years-old, were rushed to hospitals. Among them was Nares' brother, who suffered a fractured pelvis and two broken legs. He is uninsured. Gustavo is an amateur boxer and a recent graduate of San Ysidro High. He was in the process of applying to college. Instead, he faces a tough road to recovery."The advice give to all the people, especially young people is don't drive like you are in a 'Fast and Furious' movie. Be cautious. You're not just playing with your life. You're messing with other people's lives," Nares said.Nares has yet to tell his brother that his friend died in the crash. He's waiting for the right time.
