YICHANG, July 28 (Xinhua) -- China's Three Gorges Dam was tested for the second time this month when the swiftest water flow of the year hurtled down the swollen Yangtze River on Wednesday morning.Flow rates as high as 56,000 cubic meters per second were recorded at the dam at 8 a.m. Wednesday, dam engineers said.The dam withstood the flow with a water discharge rate of 40,000 cubic meters per second, meaning 16,000 cubic meters of water per second accumulated in the reservoir behind the dam.The safety monitoring results of the dam during the second flood peak have met engineers' predictions to prove its ability to contain flood waters, said Cao Guangjing, chairman of the China Three Gorges Corporation.The water level in the reservoir had risen to 158 meters at 8 a.m.Wednesday, about 17 meters below its maximum capacity of 175 meters.Officials expect the water level to rise to 161.5 meters Friday, a spokesman with the Yangtze River hydrology bureau said Wednesday.Continuous downpours in recent weeks have raised water levels in the upper reaches of the Yangtze.Water flows on the river's upper reaches reached 70,000 cubic meters per second on July 20 -- the highest level since the dam was completed last year and 20,000 cubic meters more than the flow during the 1998 floods that killed 4,150 people.Ship traffic through the dam resumed last Thursday after the first peak flow passed. But shipping was halted again at 10 p.m. Tuesday as the second round of floodwaters approached.After shipping service was suspended, a road near the dam was opened for vehicles to transport goods and people across the dam. 

BEIJING, June 13 (Xinhua) -- Flights have resumed at Beijing Capital International Airport after a thunder storm hit the city at 8 p.m. Sunday causing disruptions, the airport announced on its website.The storm had delayed a total of 170 out-bound flights and canceled 25 fights as of 9 p.m., according to the announcement.The airport suspended flights at 7:40 p.m. Sunday due to the storm, which stopped at about 9:30 p.m..The National Meteorological Center forecast heavy rain for central Hunan, eastern Jiangxi, Zhejiang, and Fujian provinces as the country begins Monday its three-day national holiday.Thunder storms are forecast for Inner Mongolia, the northeast, and the north during the next three days.

ASTANA, June 11 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao arrived here Friday evening for a two-day state visit to Kazakhstan.Hu said in a statement released upon arrival at the airport that, with the effort of both sides, his visit would be a total success and help advance the strategic partnership between China and Kazakhstan to a new stage.During the visit, Hu will hold talks with his Kazakh counterpart Nursultan Nazarbayev and meet with parliament and government leaders.The two sides will outline the future development of bilateral links. BEIJING, Aug. 5 (Xinhua) - The People's Bank of China (PBOC), also known as the central bank, said Thursday it would maintain its moderately loose monetary policy and enhance financial supports to boost the economy's sustainable development.The bank will apply multiple monetary tools to keep an appropriate growth in money supply in a bid to strike a balance between meeting the need of funding economic development and managing the inflation expectation, the PBOC said in a statement posted on its website.The PBOC reiterated it would maintain continuity and stability in monetary policy while, at the same time, making the policy more specific and more flexible.It vowed to improve the yuan's exchange rate mechanism, and increase financial support to promote the transformation of the economic growth pattern and adjustment of the economic structure.China's broad money supply (M2), which covers cash in circulation and all deposits, increased 18.5 percent year on year to 67.39 trillion yuan by the end of June, which marked a slowdown from the 21 percent increase at the end of May, the PBOC said.During the same period, narrow money supply (M1), cash in circulation plus current corporate deposits, climbed 24.6 percent from a year earlier to 24.06 trillion yuan, representing a decrease of 5.3 percentage points from the end of May, according to the PBOC.The bank also warned of potential domestic inflation risks due to complicated situations both at home and abroad.Increases in the costs of labor and environmental requirements, combined with continuing progresses in the reforms in the prices of resource products, will likely impact the inflation expectation.Meanwhile, the central bank pointed out that external 'hot money' may push up price hike pressures."The global monetary situation is relatively loose, as nations across the world have been prudent in their stimulus exits due to continuing uncertainties in the economic recovery. Excessive money is likely to seek various outlets, adding potential risks of inflation expectations," the PBOC said in its statement.
