SAN DIEGO (KGTV): Wall Street set a record last week for the longest "Bull" run in US Stock Market history, topping 3,400 days of growth. Now, financial experts are saying it won't last forever and advising clients to prepare for a downturn."You have to expect at some point, we're due," says Dennis Brewster of SagePoint Financial. "I think everybody's almost forgotten, look at earlier in the year, how sharp the markets broke back in February. So it wouldn't be unusual to see any of those declines coming up later this year or early next year."Brewster says he doesn't expect anything as drastic as 2008, but he still says investors should take a few steps to safeguard their earnings and even make the downturn work in your favor.A lot of it, he says, depends on how close you are to retirement."When you look at the year to year returns, they're all over the board. When you look at the 20-30 year returns they're very close," says Brewster. "If you're younger and have 20-30 year horizons, the day to day gyrations are almost noise to you. But if you're getting closer to retirement or in retirement, then you have to be more careful."'Brewster looked up numbers from the S&P 500 for the last 20 years. He says someone who invested ,000 in 1998 would have lost about ,300 after the crash in 2008. But if they kept their money in until 2018, that same ,000 investment would now be worth more than ,000.He says older investors should be more conservative with their portfolios. Younger investors should increase how much they invest if the market falls, to take advantage of lower prices.As for when the correction could come, Brewster says it's too tough to predict. But he says to watch out for "triggering" events that could rattle the market, some of which may already be happening. Things like trade wars or the Federal Reserve spiking interest rates could be the kind of thing to end the Bull Run."It always goes higher than you think and lower than you think," he says. "You can't ignore it, and you try not to get swallowed by it." 2072

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) -- Elected officials, community activists, and law enforcement came together Monday to launch a new "Peace Movement" with the ambitious goal of ending violence in San Diego. Organized by District 4 City Councilmember Monica Montgomery, the goal is to find solutions to address the underlying root causes of violence and build trust between police and the communities they protect."It doesn't happen overnight," Montgomery told 10News. "It's continued understanding. It's getting in places where we're uncomfortable. It's listening to things that maybe we don't agree with all the time. Those are the things that will help us understand each other."San Diego Police Department chief David Nisleit said he's on board with the effort, specifically calling on people in communities beset by crime to come forward when they have information that could help investigators bring perpetrators to justice. Some community members are reticent to contact police. "We'll get there. There's no doubt in my mind we'll get there," Nisleit told 10News. "I'm going to focus on this as a positive step. We'll build those community partnerships. We'll work together. We're already doing that, we're just going to do it on a larger scale."Another speaker at Monday's press conference launching the initiative was Bishop Cornelius Bowser. As a former gang member himself, Bowser has tried to take a leadership goal in bridging the divide between residents and law enforcement. "I'm willing to lead the way and take those risks," Bower said. "But the struggle with me is when I try to do that, I need law enforcement to understand this and get my back. I need the community to understand this and get my back."Bowser says building relationships with both sides means walking a fine line, as the very appearance of a strong relationship with either side could encourage distrust from the other. He says the important thing is having the right people at the table having real conversations. He also believes developing trust will be a slow process. "You have to get one person at a time. You're not going to be able to go into a meeting and change 100 people in a meeting."One part of the new "Peace Movement" initiative is getting rid of gang graffiti. The city joined an effort with SDG&E to cover up gang tags on electric boxes with murals featuring healing community themes. 2391

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - A former assistant at a local nursing home is accused of raping a disabled patient. In a story that you'll first see on 10News, Team 10 investigative reporter Jennifer Kastner discovered the patient was a stroke victim who uses a wheelchair. What may have happened behind the walls of the Paradise Hills nursing home is difficult to process. An accusation of rape seemed to have slid under the radar for almost a year, until now. It was a few months ago when 10News was tipped off about Reo Vista Healthcare Center, which touts being named one of Newsweek's top nursing homes and having a Medicare 5-star rating.This week, San Diego Police confirmed that detectives referred the case to the District Attorney's office, which is charging 26-year-old Ariel Chavarin-Camargo with forcible rape and a "lewd act upon a dependent adult by a caretaker". He is now sitting in a South Bay jail. According to state documents, it happened last February to a 58-year-old woman who uses a wheelchair and was living in the nursing home after suffering from a stroke and panic disorder. The documents report that the morning after the alleged assault, she reportedly came "crying" to a nurse, claiming that the night before, when she was returning from the kitchen and on her way back, "one of the CNAs (Certified Nursing Assistants) stated that one of her breasts was exposed." According to the documents, he “followed her and he exposed his private parts to her". She reportedly said, "the CNA raped her" for up to three minutes. A forensic exam reportedly found male DNA in her private area. According to the documents, when he was later questioned, he suggested that she came onto him but admitted "it happened” and “there was penetration". He reportedly said, "I feel bad. It happened so fast." Prosecutors believe that man is Chavarin-Camargo. He resigned after the reported rape. The administration of Reo Vista Healthcare Center sent 10News the following statement on Tuesday."We are grateful to local law enforcement and the District Attorney’s Office for successfully prosecuting this individual for their crime. Our team took immediate steps last February to suspend the individual, to notify, and to fully cooperate with authorities. We take all matters regarding patient safety and the conduct of staff seriously. Moreover, the actions of this individual do not reflect the values we hold at our facility. Our priority remains to provide the highest level of care for the patient and their families." Chavarin-Camargo’s next court hearing is scheduled for February 11th. 2603

  

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - Realtors say all the signs point to a busy spring and summer in San Diego."It's heating up a little bit," says Markus Feldmann, with the Pacific Real Estate Center. "We see a very active market again."Home prices have come down from their record peak in August of 2018. That month, CoreLogic reported that San Diego's median home price was 3,000. In December, it had dropped to 0,000 (see chart above). That's still higher than December of 2017, but Feldmann says buyers see it as a more reasonable range for homes.RELATED: San Diego among top hot housing markets for 2019, Zillow reportsMeanwhile, a report from Zillow says that the best time to sell a house is the first half of May. According to their numbers, homes in San Diego sold for ,000 more in that period than other times of the year. Zillow also says homes are on the market for six fewer days in early May.No matter which side of the sale you're on, Feldmann says there are simple ways you can make sure you get the most for your money.If you're a buyer, he says you don't have to keep increasing your offer. Feldmann says you can increase your deposit. You can also decrease the length of inspection time from the traditional 17 days to 10.RELATED: How housing got so expensiveMost importantly, though, he says if you have a home you like, write a letter to the seller explaining what you like about the house and why you want to buy it."It personalizes the transaction," says Feldmann. "This way a seller is going to see who is the buyer and they may have a preference. They may prefer a family or a couple over an investor. He also says there are some simple ways to spruce up the house that will make it more attractive without costing too much money."Be aware of clutter and maybe move some furniture out of the house to make the rooms look bigger," he suggests. "Put a little investment into the front yard. Put some color in, put some flowers in, maybe use some bark to delineate the flower beds. Just improve on the general appeal of the house. Those small things can have a big payout."Feldmann says it's also crucial that sellers stay patient after they list a home."Let the property sit on the MLS for a few days, don't just accept the first offer that comes," he says. "Let it breathe like a good glass of wine. The agents can often work out things like escrow times, rent-back agreements and other details to make sure that things go smoothly."Don't lose hope," he says. San Diego (KGTV)- As Westin Hotel workers fight for better wages, local business owners are fighting to keep business.Hotel workers have been on strike for the past few weeks. Business owners say customers are now avoiding the area and its costing them money.Joey Aiello owns a shoe shine stand that sits outside of The Westin Hotel. He says he’s seen fewer customers this month because of the strike. “People don’t think its a big business but it supports my family,” says Aiello.He says since the workers hit the picket line, he’s lost 00 in business. “The first week they were here I made less than 0 a day. We have to make 0 a day to stay a float.” Other business also say they are concerned about the noise.The San Diego Police Department says they have received six complaints since October 9th. A spokesperson with Marriott International sent us this statement that says in part:“We are disappointed with some of the tactics the union has deployed including the noise levels. We continue to work with local police to address these issues and we are grateful to our guests for their patience during this time.”The Unite Here Union President, Bridgette Browning, says employees are now in negotiations with the hotel. She also sent us a statement that says:“While we are sympathetic to neighboring businesses - we believe the Marriott has the power to fix this strike and the businesses should be demanding that Marriott do the right thing. The workers are not to blame for the low standards that Marriott has created at the Westin San Diego Gaslamp. The workers are prepared to settle as soon as Marriott decides to do the right thing and sign a contract that provides living wages.”For business owner Joey Aiello, he says he won’t be able to make back the money he’s lost. “I just have to work harder and keep everything a float the best I can.” 1869
