(KGTV) - The family of a Navy corpsman who died on a Southern California military base is alleging a possible coverup by members of the military following this week’s announcement from the Marines that a servicemember has been charged in connection with the death investigation.ABC10 News investigative reporter Jennifer Kastner first broke the story in 2019 after learning that the sudden death of 30-year-old HM3 Michael Vincent De Leon was being investigated as a homicide, not a suicide, like the family said they were led to believe. The Navy corpsman, or medic, died last summer on the Twentynine Palms military base, located a few hours northeast of San Diego.On Thursday, ABC10 News spoke to parents Jose and Sandra De Leon. They were overcome with emotion after learning about the new charges. “The good news in all of this is that the long wait has not been in vain," said Jose. Sandra added, “Sometimes I just listen to [my son's] recordings just to hear his voice."On Wednesday, a spokesperson for the Marines sent ABC10 News the following statement:“As you might know, this incident is still under investigation. I can confirm, however, that charges have been preferred against one of the individuals for dereliction of duty resulting in death and dereliction of duty. A hearing is not scheduled at this time. The other individuals are being investigated. I will keep you updated once we receive more information.”De Leon’s parents first contacted ABC10 News for help last year after claiming that the military stonewalled them from getting answers about their son's death. They said that Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) would only tell them that there was a shooting on base at a housing unit with other corpsmen present and a firearm was produced.ABC10 News then learned from a source with close military ties that NCIS confirmed the death was being investigated as a homicide, not a suicide.“The phone call from that residence using my son’s phone was that it was a suicide,” Jose said on Thursday. He added that prosecutors told him the servicemember charged is a Navy corpsman who was at a house party on base with his son and other corpsmen. He said prosecutors also told him that some of those corpsmen are likely facing upcoming charges.He added Thursday, “We know that the firearm was dry fired at Michael. The firearm was put away and it came out again and according to some statements they were horsing around and the firearm came out again and that's when Michael was killed.” “These men need to be held accountable for what they did...for their actions, for their lack of courage and for their lack of honor,” added Sandra.A spokesperson for NCIS reported this week that the investigation is still open. This week, 10News has learned that 30-year-old HM3 Michael Vincent De Leon may have been killed by someone else.10News began looking into the case last week after his father, Jose De Leon, contacted 10News for help. 10News interviewed De Leon over Skype because he and the rest of the family live in Texas. De Leon says his son was stationed at the Twentynine Palms Marine Corps base in San Bernardino County. It was almost two months ago when De Leon says that he was visited by military officers who informed him that his son had died and an investigation was underway.“I gathered my emotions and asked them ‘why?’ or ‘what happened?’ but they couldn't give me anything,” De Leon tells 10News.Since then, the family says they've largely been kept in the dark, but this week 10News learned from a source with close military ties that the Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) has confirmed that Michael's death is now being investigated as a homicide. It’s a very different story than what De Leon says he was lead to believe in the hours just after learning of his son’s death when he says the word "suicide" came up from service members on-base.De Leon didn't believe it, claiming there was no history of depression or substance abuse. He says his son was happy and excited about an upcoming deployment.“He was an extrovert. He could walk into a room and make friends,” he told 10News with tears in his eyes.De Leon is a former television news photojournalist. Using his skills, he started his own investigation. This is what he says he learned just 48 hours later from a service member who is close to the case. De Leon tells 10News, “I begged him, ‘Just tell me, did Michael pull the trigger or did someone else?’ There was a long pause and he [replies], ‘Mr. De Leon, someone else pulled the trigger.’"De Leon says that other service members who knew his son said that his son was shot on-base at another corpsman's going-away party in the military housing area. A full week passed, but De Leon says there was still no word from the base about what happened.“It’s a bunch of bureaucrats that are not vested at all in the family,” he adds.He says after formally complaining he finally got a call from an agent with NCIS, which is handling the investigation. De Leon says the agent would only confirm that there was a shooting on-base at a housing unit with corpsmen present and a firearm was produced. It’s now seven weeks later and 10News has verified with our source that agents are officially treating this investigation not as a suicide, but as a homicide. It remains unknown as to whether it was accidental or intentional.10News directly asked NCIS and the base for comment. On Thursday afternoon, a spokesperson for the base sent 10News the following statement:"I spoke with a representative from the Provost Marshall's Office and he has confirmed that the incident is currently still under investigation so the information you inquire is unable to be released at this time. However, I was able to confirm that the base policy for securing firearms for those who live on/work at/visit the military housing area is that all firearms need to be in a secured location in the home and must be in a secure location in order to get a weapon onto base and when being transported to and from the home. Weapons must be registered on the installation. As far as Marines living in the barracks, their firearms need to be stored in a unit armory. It is actually an inspectable item and part of the unit armory policy. I apologize I do not have more information for you at this time. Two teens in Florida tried to steal a car at a sports complex as a team of Clearwater police officers played softball, according to the Clearwater Police Department."They had no idea that basically the entire team out there was comprised of Clearwater police officers," said Sgt. Thomas Dawe.The incident happened on Monday evening at the Eddie C. Moore Softball Complex in Clearwater.The group of police officers was playing their second softball game of the evening. They were the only group playing softball and noticed the two teens walking around."Normally, there are not many fans due to COVID...They kind of seemed out of place. They weren't watching the game. They were just kind of lingering around so most of us took note of their behavior to start," said Sgt. Dawe.Clearwater Police said a 16-year-old girl stole a set of keys belonging to an umpire. The keys were placed on a table. The two teens took off running out of the sports complex.When the scorekeeper realized what happened, she yelled at the umpire who was out in the field.Sgt. Thomas Dawe, Cpl. Jarred Stiff and Officer Matthew Richmond chased after the two teens."It's just unfortunate that kids were trying to do what they did in order to get down to south St. Pete. There are other opportunities, other avenues to get places rather than taking those steps to commit a crime," said Cpl. Jarred Stiff.The police officers called for backup since they did not have handcuffs on them.The two suspects were charged with attempted grand theft of a motor vehicle. Both have been in trouble with the law before."Unfortunately, we were not able to win the game, but at least we were able to catch a couple of kids doing a bad thing," said Cpl. VALLEY CENTER, Calif. -- An 18-year-old motorcyclist was killed after a head-on crash with a sedan in Valley Center Saturday.The crash happened around 3:30 p.m. Saturday on Mac Tan Road, according to the California Highway Patrol.Officers say the 18-year-old was riding his motorcycle at a high speed when he came to a bend, lost control of the bike and slid into the opposing lane of traffic.The teen was the struck by 2004 Kia Spectra, CHP say.The motorcyclist was taken to the hospital where he later died. The driver of the sedan was uninjured.Officers say driving under the influence hasn’t been ruled out as a possible factor in the crash. 653
