SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Father Joe’s Villages will be making changes to how they serve their annual Thanksgiving meal due to the pandemic.Deacon Jim Vargas says the meals will be prepared ‘to go’ and given to people outdoors in their courtyard. As a result, they plan on needing fewer volunteers this year. Those that will be there to give out the meals will be wearing masks and practicing social distancing.Vargas says there is greater food insecurity in the community this year because of the pandemic. As a result, they are preparing more food.“We typically serve about 700 or so. We’re prepared to serve close to a thousand this year because we know there’s an increased need,” Vargas said.Anyone receiving a meal will also receive a backpack that comes with a face covering, hand sanitizer, and hygiene kits.The pandemic is also impacting their annual 5K, which is held at Balboa Park on Thanksgiving Day. This year, the event will be virtual, and Vargas says registration for the event is down. But one local head coach is encouraging parents to step up, and voice their opinion on the matter. Scripps Ranch football coach Marlon Gardinera, has formed "Letfamiliesdecide.org"."So if everybody really wants the kids in school, what we have to do is give them a voice in letting them get back to high school sports. As an example, at Scripps Ranch High School, ninety-four percent of the families said not only do they want their kids back in school, but they want them on campus."Currently, coach Gardinera says the number of players has increased at the Falcons summer's workouts"Parents are deciding they want their kids on campus. Thirty percent more of them are sending their kids out to football this summer. The kids have been cooped up in the house, and parents want them participating in a controlled activity."Of course with safety being the number one priority."We take everyone's temperature, and we ask them five symptom related questions before we let them loose. According to officials with the Workforce Partnership, walk-ins won’t be accepted, however some services will be available by appointment only.“Our resources have always been available online, and actually the number one way people file for unemployment in or out of a public health emergency is online,” said Andrew Picard, chief program Officer at the San Diego Workforce Partnership.Picard said if people don't have a computer or internet access, don't worry, the phone still works. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Gusty offshore winds and high temperatures will work their way back into San Diego County this week.San Diego Fire-Rescue is expected to beef of staffing Sunday through Monday in anticipation of the Santa Ana wind event forecasted to start Sunday night.Sunday, winds will turn offshore and become gusty along coastal slopes, according to the National Weather Service. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Frank Zamarron, 26, credits his Apple Watch for saving his life.“No warning signs, no pain no nothing,” Zamarron.  “All to know is that my Apple Watch started going off.”It was a Monday night in March, and his watch was alerting him something was wrong.“My heart-rate is elevated, and I'm just sitting at home watching TV relaxing from a long day at work,” he said. “After the fourth alert, I was like okay, something is not right. Time for me to a go to the hospital.”It was a decision that saved his life. It turns out, Zamarron contracted cellulitis, a skin infection, on his right leg. Soon after doctors started treating him, his leg began to blister.“Apparently your body is reacting to the infection trying to fight it off, doing everything it can, raising your heart rate,” Zamarron said. “They said it could have been fatal in a certain situation. Depending on how I treated it. Typically you would take pain pills or something and call it a day.”Zamarron spent seven days in the hospital.Doctors told him his weight might have contributed to the infection. Zamarron is now focused on staying active and getting healthier. 1223
