The plaintiffs -- two adults and five children -- fled Guatemala in April after they were targeted for extortion, the family's 17-year-old daughter was raped and threatened with death, and her 9-year-old brother stricken with leukemia, according to the lawsuit filed by the ACLU Foundation of San Diego and Imperial counties on behalf of the family. 349
The last few days have been filled with this unsettling thought in the back of my mind. Trying to stay positive about it all, but seeing the flames breach over the hill last night really puts everything into perspective. I’m beyond thankful for the firefighters and emergency personnel who are doing their best to fight this blaze. As painful as it is to watch the hills and trails I have grown up on burn or how eerily the fire is creeping towards our community; it’s important to remember that all of these things are just things. Everyone is safe and if we need to evacuate we will have more then enough time to do so. Thoughts and prayers are still very much welcomed. #HolyFireA post shared by Zach Pallares (@zachpallares) on Aug 8, 2018 at 11:49am PDT 759

The plane crashed into the Winter Haven home around 1 p.m. on Saturday. There were two people on board, a pilot and a trainee student. The pilot, 64-year-old James Wagner of Lakeland, was killed in the crash. The trainee, 33-year-old Timothy Sheehy of Montana, walked away with only minor injuries, according to the sheriff's office. It's unclear at this time who was piloting the plane.“It was a day of miracles because Timothy Sheehy, the trainee pilot, actually walked out of the crash, if you can believe that," Judd said. "Walked out of the crash, and was wandering around when Winter Haven firefighters arrived.”Judd said the two men were flying with the goal to simulate engine failure training. It's unknown if they were simulating engine failure at the time of the crash, Judd said. They took off from Winter Have Airport then the aircraft lost power. The 17-year-old girl who was in a bedroom the plane crashed through was taken to the hospital with only minor injuries. “Not only was she in the bedroom that the plane crashed into, but she was pinned and entrapped in the bedroom,” Judd said. The teenager's brother, who was in a neighboring room, tried to free her but was unable to, according to Judd. She was later freed by Winter Haven firefighters. The mother of the teenager was also in the home at the time, and three children were playing in the driveway. They were not injured. At this time, the plane is still stuck in the home and is leaking fuel, according to Judd. Firefighters will stay on scene until it's considered safe. Judd said the plane will be removed with a crane in a few days, but it will be left where it is until NTSB and the FAA arrive to investigate. First responders were on the scene within five minutes of the call, the Director of Public Safety in Winter Haven Charlie Bird said. Story developing, refresh for updates.
