ABBOTT PARK, Ill. – As the coronavirus continues to spread and the need for more testing grows with it, labs across the U.S. are racing to get approval for their tests for COVID-19. The company Abbott is one of them. “Abbott was able to get an emergency use authorization for a new test, molecular test for the SARS-coronavirus-2,” said John Hackett, Jr., the Divisional Vice President of Applied Research and Technology at Abbott. Researchers inside their Illinois lab created a test that can be used with the company’s testing system, called “m2000 RealTime.” That’s key because the company says that system is already widely available in hospitals and testing labs around the country. “These are in hospitals and academic centers and this is where the test volume is,” Hackett said. The speed in regulatory approval from the FDA for the test was unprecedented. The company said that, normally, it can take several years to get a test approved; this one happened in a matter of weeks. Their testing system can run through 470 patient tests per day. “This is a massive impact when you think about trying to get results back to the physicians,” Hackett said. “This is actionable information - either a person's infected or they're not.” About 150,000 tests are now on their way to hospitals and labs in 18 states – including New York, California and Washington – some of the hardest hit by COVID-19. The company plans to be producing a million tests a week by the end of this month. Other companies, including those in California and Texas, have similar authorizations from the FDA and are hoping to provide more tests. “The key thing here is to get to a point where we can change the trajectory, reduce the trajectory, reduce the number of new infections that are occurring,” Hackett said.It’s a change they hope might put a dent in the coronavirus pandemic. 1872

A Florida judge has denied a request for a temporary injunction to block the Palm Beach County mask mandate.Attorneys for a group of Palm Beach County residents filed a lawsuit claiming that the county's emergency order requiring masks in public places to help prevent the spread of the coronavirus was unconstitutional.Judge John Kastrenakes issued his ruling Monday morning."The right to be 'free from governmental intrusion' does not automatically or completely shield an individual's conduct from regulation," Kastrenakes wrote in his 13-page order. "More to the point, constitutional rights and the ideals of limited government do not absolve a cititzen from the real-world consequences of their individual choices, or otherwise allow them to wholly shirk their social obligation to their fellow Americans or to society as a whole. This is particularly true when one's individual choices can result in drastic, costly and sometimes deadly consequences to others."Kastrenakes went on to say that there is no "constitutional or protected right to infect others."Commissioners voted unanimously last month to approve the mask mandate, despite objections from an impassioned group of residents who spoke against such an ordinance.County Administrator Verdenia Baker last week extended the order for an additional 30 days. It now remains in effect until at least Aug. 23.Mayor Dave Kerner said Friday that the county is in the process of mailing about 3 million masks to residents."As this community tries desperately to navigate the tumultuous seas presented by COVID-19, it is reasonable and logical that our elected officials are throwing the citizens of Palm Beach County a lifeline in an attempt to ameliorate the spread of this deadly, unbridled and widespread disease," Kastrenakes concluded. "Based on the evidence, this court will not second guess the manner in which a co-equal branch of government sought to discharge its sacred duty to protect the general public."A statement from the Florida Civil Rights Coalition, which filed the lawsuit on behalf of the plaintiffs, said Kastrenakes "unsurprisingly" denied the motion, "paving the way for continued government tyranny under the guise of disease prevention in Palm Beach County."Attorneys for the plaintiffs argued during a hearing last week that the mask mandate infringes upon their clients' constitutional rights.In their statement, attorneys claim the ruling "disregards fundamental rights like freedom of speech and the right to medical self-determination protected by the Florida Constitution."The Florida Civil Rights Coalition plans to appeal the ruling. Boarding a flight can sometimes be a long process, and if you’re flying internationally, it can take even longer. However, thanks to new technology, you can soon say goodbye to those long wait times. It's called facial biometrics, and essentially, travelers’ faces are their boarding passes. One of the companies behind the facial recognition technology at the airport is SITA. A machine scans the traveler’s face right before you board, ensuring the right people are getting on the plane. "There is an element of enhanced confidence in your flight about who is on your flight from this activity," says Janice Kephart, former National Security Director says. That's because U.S. Customs and Border Protection, along with SITA, uses your face against terror watch lists and illegal aliens. "In the first two months, we've got 62 imposters that we could’ve missed, because human beings are pretty lousy when it comes to determining imposters," says Colleen Manaher, executive director of U.S. Customs and Borders Protection. Manaher says biometric technology is enhancing traveler safety and convenience at airports around the country. The agency hopes one day TSA will jump on board with using facial biometrics. The new technology is currently being used at airports in Miami, Orlando and Atlanta. 1316
CASA GRANDE, Ariz. – Schools across the nation are having trouble filling teacher jobs – so districts are coming up with unique solutions. The Casa Grande Union High School District has looked overseas to help fill their teacher positions – which led us to Melvin Injosa. “If you ask me to dance I’ll suck, if you ask me to sing I’ll suck more, but if you want me to do science, physics, I’ll pour myself out,” said Melvin Injosa, teacher at Vista Grande High School in Casa Grande, Arizona. He teaches physics and chemistry and moved to Arizona from the Philippines a few years ago. He’s in the U.S. through a J-1 Visa teacher program, which allows him to teach and learn in America for up to five years. Injosa is currently in his fourth year. “It’s the best experience so far, for me,” he said, after moving here with his wife who also teaches at the school. “Many of our math and science jobs are filled by teachers from the Philippines,” said Steve Bebee, Superintendent of the Casa Grande Union High School District. Of the over 200 teachers they oversee, 18 are teaching through the J-1 Visa teacher program. Ten others finished their terms last year. “There is not an abundance of teachers applying in our district and coming our way,” Bebee explained. Arizona, California, Florida, Texas, New Mexico, North Carolina, and South Carolina have some of the highest numbers of J-1 Visa teachers, and that number rises year over year. Arizona had 187 in 2018, while North Carolina had the most with 522 participants, according to the U.S. State Department. But the new approach to hiring qualified teachers hasn’t been a hit with everyone. “Do we cut out jobs for people that are already in the U.S.? And we are not, because if we had those positions we wouldn’t have to look,” Bebee said. Just under 21 percent of teacher jobs in Arizona were still vacant a few weeks into the 2018-2019 school year, accounting for about 1,443 positions, according to a survey of 150 schools by the Arizona Personnel Admin Association completed in August 2019. “For teachers in Arizona, you’re lucky to get one applicant,” said Justin Wing, director of human resources for the Washington Elementary School District. “It hit us pretty hard.” Wing created the report that shows how the lack of teachers applying for open positions has impacted class sizes and the need for long-term substitute teachers over the years. Wing explained that Arizona is top five in highest class sizes across the nation. And the average teacher salary in the state is around ,000 lower than the national average, with Arizona sitting at ,973, according to the Learning Policy Institute in 2018. The combo of high class sizes and low pay has made it difficult to attract qualified educators in a lot of states.“I think a big issue is related to working conditions,” Leanne Abushar said. Abushar is an elementary school teacher in Phoenix, Arizona and the president of Phoenix Elementary Classroom Teachers Association.“Pay, working conditions, benefits, all of those things link back to teacher recruitment and retention,” she said. Abushar and the rest of the association are working on getting a contract in place for better pay, and other demands for teachers. She says many people just aren't applying for teacher jobs because they aren't appealing to applicants. “Everybody has been stuck with trying to find remedies,” Bebee said. "Every district is prioritizing their recruiting efforts differently, because if all of us are doing the same thing, we’re hitting still that same pool,” Wing explained. Which brings us back to Melvin Injosa’a chemistry class. Despite low wages, he currently gets paid more in this country than he would in his own. About five times more than his salary back in the Philippines.Melvin understands he has a limited time in the United States, but he makes the most of it. “Even if I only have five years here, I think I learned a lot,” he said. 3964
